Where to pick the pebbles from and the number and size of pebbles
Where
to pick the pebbles from
It
is preferred to pick the pebbles of the
first day from Muzdalifah to throw
Jamrah Al Aqabah. As for the Jamarat of
At-Tashriq days, the majority of
scholars held that they were not to be
picked from Muzdalifah. It is allowed to
pick them from anywhere. However, it is
disliked to pick them from the mosque or
impure places. It is also disliked to
re-use the pebbles used before by the
pilgrim himself or by others. However,
it is allowed to throw these already
used pebbles. One should not overdo
things and wash up the pebbles for it is
not a Sunnah.
The
number and size of pebbles:
The
total number to be thrown in each Jamrah
is seven pebbles. The Jamarat thrown on
each day of the days of At-Tashriq are
three. If one is in a hurry, he may
throw them in two days but if
one wants to do what is best, he may
throw them in three days' time. The size
of the pebbles is that of beans. It is
disliked to throw smaller or larger
pebbles if the pilgrim has no valid
excuse to justify it. Malik, Ash-Shaf'i,
Ahmad and the majority of scholars held
that it is not allowed to throw anything
except for pebbles e.g. things made of
lead, iron, gold, silver, arsenic etc.
It is not allowed for the pilgrims to
throw their slippers, shoes or the like
instead of pebbles as some of the
ignorant pilgrims often do. The Hanafi
school allowed throwing anything that
comes from earth such as stone, clay,
baked bricks and the like.
