Germany: Russian Espionage Is More Dangerous Than
International Terrorism
27 June 2010 By Markaz Kavkaz
Germany's Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere
called industrial espionage one of the main problems
of the German economy, saying that Russia and China
are the leaders in it.
Moscow offended and demands explanations. "We would
expect to receive explanations from our partners
through diplomatic channels", Russian foreign ministry
spokesman Andrei Nesterenko said in this regard.
Meanwhile, Minister Thomas de Maiziere, presented
his report on the protection of the constitution of
Germany for 2009. According to him, German companies
are still underestimating the risk that comes from
industrial espionage from Russia and China, undertaken
by state authorities or with their support, Deutsche
Welle reports.
It is noteworthy that a few days in the Czech
Republic a report of the security information service
of the country for 2009 has been made public. It also
spoke of "intense and aggressive" espionage of Russia
in the field of science and technology. In Czech
Republic the activity of Russian intelligence officers
has been linked to plans of former US president George
W. Bush to place ABM on its territory.
Four Russian diplomats were expelled from Czech
Republic last year, as they were allegedly showing
interest in the classified information on placing a US
radar. At the same time such actions caused extremely
negative reaction in Russian ministry of foreign
affairs. "This is yet another provocation", said then
foreign minister Sergei Lavrov.
Russian spies are infiltrating not only into German
companies, but also in the higher echelons of power.
The current report is not much different from the
results collected in 2008. Then the German press
relished various facts of increasing espionage
activity of Russian on the territory of Germany,
explaining that secret information from German
industry is simply priceless for economically backward
country like Russia.
According to the intelligence of Germany, spies
from Russia are primarily interested in information
about alternative and renewable energy sources and
measures to improve their effectiveness. In addition,
the energy interests of Europe, the plans to diversify
energy supplies and the economic situation of Germany
as a whole, are falling into the scope of their
attention.
Along with it, German companies are increasingly
becoming targets of cyber attacks from Russia, as,
indeed, from China. A number of countries in the Far
and Middle East and North Africa are engaged in such
activity. Particular interest for hackers are
companies that work with the latest technologies.
The 2010 is also, apparently, would not be an
exception in a series of constant claims of German
leadership concerning the Russian espionage, and not
just industrial. Thus, in March this year two Germans
suspected of transferring data to Russian were
detected in the office of prime minister of
Brandenburg. No formal charges had been brought
against them. However, access to classified
information was blocked to one of them.
