Some time ago, Russian authorities allowed Iran to buy a large piece of land between Shamilkala (former Makhachkala) and the Caspian Sea. The Iranians are planning to build a large Shiite religion center there.

There are already several Shi'a mosques operating in Dagestan. Shiite literature in Russian has flown from Iran. With support from Moscow, numerous Shiite groups were created. Large sums of money have been allocated to promote Shi'ism.

The so-called "public chamber" in Moscow held a meeting last week, which discussed the "prospects of cultural and educational cooperation between Russia and Iran".

This meeting was attended by the Iranian ambassador to Russia. And the head of the so-called "cultural representation office" at the Iranian Embassy in Moscow, Abuzar Torkaman, openly stated that "the antidote to extremism in Caucasus is Sufism".

A portal Vestnik Kavkaza gives detailed records of Torkaman's speech. "I want to say that we have a lot of common points and similar views with those of Russia because we have close cultural framework, we understand each other", he said.

"In addition, we all have the same threat - cultural and ideological invasion. This extremism is considered a threat for both you and us. Based on the culture and civilization unity of Caspian states, we suggest that they each created an association of cultural cooperation between the Caspian states", said Torkaman.

According to him, three years ago, Russian Minister of Culture Avdeyev made a trip to Iran.

Russian language courses in Iran has increased 10 times, many Iranian universities have already Russian courses, departments and faculties of the Russian language. Unfortunately, the opposite trend can be observed in Russia. The desire to study Persian has been slowly dying ", he said.

In his view, there is one feature of the Persian language and culture, which is important for modern Russia.

"The antidote to your Caucasus extremism is in Persia, among the Sufis. All Sufi works of North Caucasus are borrowed from Persia, where they were written in Persian ", admitted Torkaman.

"Therefore, to counter extremism, we must pay attention to the study of the Persian language. We must not forget that in the archives of the Russian Federation, there are more than 30 ,000 Iranian manuscripts," he recalled. "And nobody reads them. Therefore, we believe that the Russian government should allocate separate funding and support this process".

Iran invites Russia to fight extremism (i.e. Islam - KC) in North Caucasus through cultural and educational cooperation between Russia and Iran, as well as through promotion of the Persian spiritual culture through so-called "Public Chamber of Russia".

In other words, Shiism in the Caucasus is considered as an opposition to Islam.

According to a member of "public chamber" Boris Yakemenko, the joint event held in Moscow was aimed at "resumption of cooperation and exploration of synergies between the two countries in the field of education and culture, as well as in business and tourism".

"We discussed the issues of students' exchange, the prospects of tourism development, including business, and the issues of joint cultural programs", said Yakemenko.

Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Mahmoud Reza Sajjadi is sure that Russia and Iran have very good prospects for cooperation in opposing extremism in North Caucasus.

In this regard, the KGB press recalls that cooperation between Russia and Iran "in the joint fight against different types of threats to the security of both countries has a long history".

Thus, in January this year, at the meeting of the ringleaders of Iranian and the Russian interior ministries in Moscow, it was agreed that the Ministries will work together to fight extremism, terrorism and cybercrime.

Russian media recognized that Dagestan is a priority for joint projects of Russia and Iran. Local apostates repeatedly and publicly stated "that they are ready to cooperate with Iran in all directions"
