Israel purchased a sewage treatment system for Nauru, a tiny island nation in the Pacific Ocean, only two weeks before the country voted against a UN General Assembly resolution condemning the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

According to the website of Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, the Israeli foreign ministry's tenders committee approved the purchase of the sewage treatment plant at a cost $71,997 without a tender.

While Nauru is only 21 square kilometers in size with a population of a mere 11,359 people, it still has a vote at the UN equal to that of the US, Russia and China.

Hamas: UN's vote in favor of anti-Trump resolution momentous

Hamas on Thursday evening lauded the UN General Assembly's vote in favor of a resolution rejecting the U.S. President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Hamas called for translating the vote into action and for defending Occupied Jerusalem against Judaization schemes, excavations, and illegal settlement expansion.

The Movement hailed all those who voted in favor of Palestine and stood up for Palestinians' right to defend their land and holy sites, despite simmering pressure by Washington.

A resounding majority of United Nations member states has defied unprecedented threats by the U.S., declaring Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital "null and void".

The non-binding resolution was approved at a UN General Assembly emergency meeting on Thursday with 128 votes in favor and nine against, while 35 countries abstained.

The resolution passed despite intimidation by Trump, who had threatened on Wednesday to halt financial aid to member states who would vote against his decision, while Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the UN, had warned that she would be "taking names" of those countries.

Masri calls for further efforts to defend Jerusalem

Thousands of Palestinians took part in a demonstration organized by Hamas movement in Gaza following Friday prayer in rejection of the US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The Hamas official, Mushir al-Masri, said in his speech during the demonstration, which witnessed the participation of a number of Hamas leaders including the head of the Movement's Political Bureau, Ismail Haneyya, that Hamas vows to make every possible effort to overturn the US decision.

Masri hailed the masses protesting the US move all around the world and called for more efforts by the Arab and Muslim nations to protect Jerusalem.

He affirmed that the Israeli occupation of Palestine is destined to end, stressing the need to establish a unified national strategy based on achieving Palestinian reconciliation first to confront the current challenges targeting Jerusalem.

Masri called on Fatah movement to take positive steps similar to those taken by Hamas to make the reconciliation succeed and asked the Palestinian Authority government to lift the sanctions imposed on the Palestinian people in Gaza and assume its responsibilities toward them.
