Ayah  37:1  الأية
    +/- -/+  
بِسْم ِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
وَالصَّافَّاتِ صَفًّا
Sahih International
 
By those [angels] lined up in rows

Muhsin Khan
 
By those (angels) ranged in ranks (or rows).

Pickthall
 
By those who set the ranks in battle order

Yusuf Ali
 
By those who range themselves in ranks,

Shakir
 
I swear by those who draw themselves out in ranks

Dr. Ghali
 
And by those ranged in ranks ranging,

Ayah  37:2  الأية
    +/- -/+  
فَالزَّاجِرَاتِ زَجْرًا
Sahih International
 
And those who drive [the clouds]

Muhsin Khan
 
By those (angels) who drive the clouds in a good way.

Pickthall
 
And those who drive away (the wicked) with reproof

Yusuf Ali
 
And so are strong in repelling (evil),

Shakir
 
Then those who drive away with reproof,

Dr. Ghali
 
Then by the scarers scaring, (This is sometimes meat that the Angles perform such acts)

Ayah  37:3  الأية
    +/- -/+  
فَالتَّالِيَاتِ ذِكْرًا
Sahih International
 
And those who recite the message,

Muhsin Khan
 
By those (angels) who bring the Book and the Quran from Allah to mankind [Tafsir Ibn Kathir].

Pickthall
 
And those who read (the Word) for a reminder,

Yusuf Ali
 
And thus proclaim the Message (of Allah)!

Shakir
 
Then those who recite, being mindful,

Dr. Ghali
 
Then by the reciters of a Remembrance,

Ayah  37:4  الأية
    +/- -/+  
إِنَّ إِلَٰهَكُمْ لَوَاحِدٌ
Sahih International
 
Indeed, your God is One,

Muhsin Khan
 
Verily your Ilah (God) is indeed One (i.e. Allah);

Pickthall
 
Lo! thy Lord is surely One;

Yusuf Ali
 
Verily, verily, your Allah is one!-

Shakir
 
Most surely your Allah is One:

Dr. Ghali
 
Surely your God is indeed One,

Ayah  37:5  الأية
    +/- -/+  
رَّبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ الْمَشَارِقِ
Sahih International
 
Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them and Lord of the sunrises.

Muhsin Khan
 
Lord of the heavens and of the earth, and all that is between them, and Lord of every point of the sun's risings. (None has the right to be worshipped but Allah).

Pickthall
 
Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all that is between them, and Lord of the sun's risings.

Yusuf Ali
 
Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all between them, and Lord of every point at the rising of the sun!

Shakir
 
The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, and Lord of the easts.

Dr. Ghali
 
The Lord of the heavens and the earth, and whatever is between them both and The Lord of the easts.

Ayah  37:6  الأية
    +/- -/+  
إِنَّا زَيَّنَّا السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا بِزِينَةٍ الْكَوَاكِبِ
Sahih International
 
Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars

Muhsin Khan
 
Verily! We have adorned the near heaven with the stars (for beauty).

Pickthall
 
Lo! We have adorned the lowest heaven with an ornament, the planets;

Yusuf Ali
 
We have indeed decked the lower heaven with beauty (in) the stars,-

Shakir
 
Surely We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment, the stars,

Dr. Ghali
 
Surely We have adorned the lowest heaven with an adornment, the planets,

Ayah  37:7  الأية
    +/- -/+  
وَحِفْظًا مِّن كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ مَّارِدٍ
Sahih International
 
And as protection against every rebellious devil

Muhsin Khan
 
And to guard against every rebellious devil.

Pickthall
 
With security from every froward devil.

Yusuf Ali
 
(For beauty) and for guard against all obstinate rebellious evil spirits,

Shakir
 
And (there is) a safeguard against every rebellious Shaitan.

Dr. Ghali
 
And (as) a preservation against every insurgent Shatan. (Ever vicious (one), i.e., devil).

Ayah  37:8  الأية
    +/- -/+  
لَّا يَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى الْمَلَإِ الْأَعْلَىٰ وَيُقْذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبٍ
Sahih International
 
[So] they may not listen to the exalted assembly [of angels] and are pelted from every side,

Muhsin Khan
 
They cannot listen to the higher group (angels) for they are pelted from every side.

Pickthall
 
They cannot listen to the Highest Chiefs for they are pelted from every side,

Yusuf Ali
 
(So) they should not strain their ears in the direction of the Exalted Assembly but be cast away from every side,

Shakir
 
They cannot listen to the exalted assembly and they are thrown at from every side,

Dr. Ghali
 
They do not overhear the most Exalted Chiefs, (i.e., angels) and they are pelted (with hurled meteors) from every side,

Ayah  37:9  الأية
    +/- -/+  
دُحُورًا ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ وَاصِبٌ
Sahih International
 
Repelled; and for them is a constant punishment,

Muhsin Khan
 
Outcast, and theirs is a constant (or painful) torment.

Pickthall
 
Outcast, and theirs is a perpetual torment;

Yusuf Ali
 
Repulsed, for they are under a perpetual penalty,

Shakir
 
Being driven off, and for them is a perpetual chastisement,

Dr. Ghali
 
Rejected, and they will have a lasting torment,

Ayah  37:10  الأية
    +/- -/+  
إِلَّا مَنْ خَطِفَ الْخَطْفَةَ فَأَتْبَعَهُ شِهَابٌ ثَاقِبٌ
Sahih International
 
Except one who snatches [some words] by theft, but they are pursued by a burning flame, piercing [in brightness].

Muhsin Khan
 
Except such as snatch away something by stealing and they are pursued by a flaming fire of piercing brightness.

Pickthall
 
Save him who snatcheth a fragment, and there pursueth him a piercing flame.

Yusuf Ali
 
Except such as snatch away something by stealth, and they are pursued by a flaming fire, of piercing brightness.

Shakir
 
Except him who snatches off but once, then there follows him a brightly shining flame.

Dr. Ghali
 
Except him who snatches a snatching (away); then a piercing flaming (meteor) follows him up.

Ayah  37:11  الأية
    +/- -/+  
فَاسْتَفْتِهِمْ أَهُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَم مَّنْ خَلَقْنَا ۚ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُم مِّن طِينٍ لَّازِبٍ
Sahih International
 
Then inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Are they a stronger [or more difficult] creation or those [others] We have created?" Indeed, We created men from sticky clay.

Muhsin Khan
 
Then ask them (i.e. these polytheists, O Muhammad SAW): "Are they stronger as creation, or those (others like the heavens and the earth and the mountains, etc.) whom We have created?" Verily, We created them of a sticky clay.

Pickthall
 
Then ask them (O Muhammad): Are they stronger as a creation, or those (others) whom we have created? Lo! We created them of plastic clay.

Yusuf Ali
 
Just ask their opinion: are they the more difficult to create, or the (other) beings We have created? Them have We created out of a sticky clay!

Shakir
 
Then ask them whether they are stronger in creation or those (others) whom We have created. Surely We created them of firm clay.

Dr. Ghali
 
So ask them for a pronouncement: "Are they more valiant as a creation or the ones We created? Surely We created them of clinging clay."

Ayah  37:12  الأية
    +/- -/+  
بَلْ عَجِبْتَ وَيَسْخَرُونَ
Sahih International
 
But you wonder, while they mock,

Muhsin Khan
 
Nay, you (O Muhammad SAW) wondered (at their insolence) while they mock (at you and at the Quran).

Pickthall
 
Nay, but thou dost marvel when they mock

Yusuf Ali
 
Truly dost thou marvel, while they ridicule,

Shakir
 
Nay! you wonder while they mock,

Dr. Ghali
 
No indeed, you wonder, and they scoff,

Ayah  37:13  الأية
    +/- -/+  
وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُوا لَا يَذْكُرُونَ
Sahih International
 
And when they are reminded, they remember not.

Muhsin Khan
 
And when they are reminded, they pay no attention.

Pickthall
 
And heed not when they are reminded,

Yusuf Ali
 
And, when they are admonished, pay no heed,-

Shakir
 
And when they are reminded, they mind not,

Dr. Ghali
 
And when they are reminded, they do not remember.

Ayah  37:14  الأية
    +/- -/+  
وَإِذَا رَأَوْا آيَةً يَسْتَسْخِرُونَ
Sahih International
 
And when they see a sign, they ridicule

Muhsin Khan
 
And when they see an Ayah (a sign, a proof, or an evidence) from Allah, they mock at it.

Pickthall
 
And seek to scoff when they behold a portent.

Yusuf Ali
 
And, when they see a Sign, turn it to mockery,

Shakir
 
And when they see a sign they incite one another to scoff,

Dr. Ghali
 
And when they see a sign, they turn it to scoffing.

Ayah  37:15  الأية
    +/- -/+  
وَقَالُوا إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُّبِينٌ
Sahih International
 
And say, "This is not but obvious magic.

Muhsin Khan
 
And they say: "This is nothing but evident magic!

Pickthall
 
And they say: Lo! this is mere magic;

Yusuf Ali
 
And say, "This is nothing but evident sorcery!

Shakir
 
And they say: This is nothing but clear magic:

Dr. Ghali
 
And they have said, "Decidedly this is nothing except an evident sorcery.

Ayah  37:16  الأية
    +/- -/+  
أَإِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ
Sahih International
 
When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?

Muhsin Khan
 
"When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we (then) verily be resurrected?

Pickthall
 
When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised (again)?

Yusuf Ali
 
"What! when we die, and become dust and bones, shall we (then) be raised up (again)

Shakir
 
What! when we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then certainly be raised,

Dr. Ghali
 
When we die and are dust and bones, will we surely be made to rise again indeed?

Ayah  37:17  الأية
    +/- -/+  
أَوَآبَاؤُنَا الْأَوَّلُونَ
Sahih International
 
And our forefathers [as well]?"

Muhsin Khan
 
"And also our fathers of old?"

Pickthall
 
And our forefathers?

Yusuf Ali
 
"And also our fathers of old?"

Shakir
 
Or our fathers of yore?

Dr. Ghali
 
And our earliest fathers?"

Ayah  37:18  الأية
    +/- -/+  
قُلْ نَعَمْ وَأَنتُمْ دَاخِرُونَ
Sahih International
 
Say, "Yes, and you will be [rendered] contemptible."

Muhsin Khan
 
Say (O Muhammad SAW): "Yes, and you shall then be humiliated."

Pickthall
 
Say (O Muhammad): Ye, in truth; and ye will be brought low.

Yusuf Ali
 
Say thou: "Yea, and ye shall then be humiliated (on account of your evil)."

Shakir
 
Say: Aye! and you shall be abject.

Dr. Ghali
 
Say, "Yes, and you will be (utterly) abject."

Ayah  37:19  الأية
    +/- -/+  
فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجْرَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ فَإِذَا هُمْ يَنظُرُونَ
Sahih International
 
It will be only one shout, and at once they will be observing.

Muhsin Khan
 
It will be a single Zajrah [shout (i.e. the second blowing of the Trumpet)], and behold, they will be staring!

Pickthall
 
There is but one Shout, and lo! they behold,

Yusuf Ali
 
Then it will be a single (compelling) cry; and behold, they will begin to see!

Shakir
 
So it shall only be a single cry, when lo! they shall see.

Dr. Ghali
 
So, surely it is only one scaring, then only then, they are looking on.

Ayah  37:20  الأية
    +/- -/+  
وَقَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا هَٰذَا يَوْمُ الدِّينِ
Sahih International
 
They will say, "O woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense."

Muhsin Khan
 
They will say: "Woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense!"

Pickthall
 
And say: Ah, woe for us! This is the Day of Judgment.

Yusuf Ali
 
They will say, "Ah! Woe to us! This is the Day of Judgment!"

Shakir
 
And they shall say: O woe to us! this is the day of requital.

Dr. Ghali
 
And they say, "oh woe to us! This is the Day of Doom." (Or: Judgment; Religion)

Ayah  37:21  الأية
    +/- -/+  
هَٰذَا يَوْمُ الْفَصْلِ الَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِ تُكَذِّبُونَ
Sahih International
 
[They will be told], "This is the Day of Judgement which you used to deny."

Muhsin Khan
 
(It will be said): "This is the Day of Judgement which you used to deny."

Pickthall
 
This is the Day of Separation, which ye used to deny.

Yusuf Ali
 
(A voice will say,) "This is the Day of Sorting Out, whose truth ye (once) denied!"

Shakir
 
This is the day of the judgment which you called a lie.

Dr. Ghali
 
This is the Day of Verdict, which you used to cry lies to.

Ayah  37:22  الأية
    +/- -/+  
احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَ
Sahih International
 
[The angels will be ordered], "Gather those who committed wrong, their kinds, and what they used to worship

Muhsin Khan
 
(It will be said to the angels): "Assemble those who did wrong, together with their companions (from the devils) and what they used to worship.

Pickthall
 
(And it is said unto the angels): Assemble those who did wrong, together with their wives and what they used to worship

Yusuf Ali
 
"Bring ye up", it shall be said, "The wrong-doers and their wives, and the things they worshipped-

Shakir
 
Gather together those who were unjust and their associates, and what they used to worship

Dr. Ghali
 
Muster the ones who did injustice, and their spouses, and whatever they were worshiping.

Ayah  37:23  الأية
    +/- -/+  
مِن دُونِ اللهِ فَاهْدُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطِ الْجَحِيمِ
Sahih International
 
Other than Allah , and guide them to the path of Hellfire

Muhsin Khan
 
"Instead of Allah, and lead them on to the way of flaming Fire (Hell);

Pickthall
 
Instead of Allah, and lead them to the path to hell;

Yusuf Ali
 
"Besides Allah, and lead them to the Way to the (Fierce) Fire!

Shakir
 
Besides Allah, then lead them to the way to hell.

Dr. Ghali
 
Apart from Allah, and so guide them to the path of Hell-Fire.

Ayah  37:24  الأية
    +/- -/+  
وَقِفُوهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسْئُولُونَ
Sahih International
 
And stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned."

Muhsin Khan
 
"But stop them, verily they are to be questioned.

Pickthall
 
And stop them, for they must be questioned.

Yusuf Ali
 
"But stop them, for they must be asked:

Shakir
 
And stop them, for they shall be questioned:

Dr. Ghali
 
And bid them stand; surely they are to be questioned,

Ayah  37:25  الأية
    +/- -/+  
مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَنَاصَرُونَ
Sahih International
 
[They will be asked], "What is [wrong] with you? Why do you not help each other?"

Muhsin Khan
 
"What is the matter with you? Why do you not help one another (as you used to do in the world)?"

Pickthall
 
What aileth you that ye help not one another?

Yusuf Ali
 
"'What is the matter with you that ye help not each other?'"

Shakir
 
What is the matter with you that you do not help each other?

Dr. Ghali
 
How is it that you do not vindicate one another?

Ayah  37:26  الأية
    +/- -/+  
بَلْ هُمُ الْيَوْمَ مُسْتَسْلِمُونَ
Sahih International
 
But they, that Day, are in surrender.

Muhsin Khan
 
Nay, but that Day they shall surrender,

Pickthall
 
Nay, but this day they make full submission.

Yusuf Ali
 
Nay, but that day they shall submit (to Judgment);

Shakir
 
Nay! on that day they shall be submissive.

Dr. Ghali
 
No indeed; (but) they are today submitting themselves.

Ayah  37:27  الأية
    +/- -/+  
وَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ
Sahih International
 
And they will approach one another blaming each other.

Muhsin Khan
 
And they will turn to one another and question one another.

Pickthall
 
And some of them draw near unto others, mutually questioning.

Yusuf Ali
 
And they will turn to one another, and question one another.

Shakir
 
And some of them shall advance towards others, questioning each other.

Dr. Ghali
 
And some of them come forward to others, (Literally: some (others) asking one another (questions).

Ayah  37:28  الأية
    +/- -/+  
قَالُوا إِنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ تَأْتُونَنَا عَنِ الْيَمِينِ
Sahih International
 
They will say, "Indeed, you used to come at us from the right."

Muhsin Khan
 
They will say: "It was you who used to come to us from the right side [i.e. from the right side of one of us and beautify for us every evil, order us for polytheism, and stop us from the truth i.e. Islamic Monotheism and from every good deed]."

Pickthall
 
They say: Lo! ye used to come unto us, imposing, (swearing that ye spoke the truth).

Yusuf Ali
 
They will say: "It was ye who used to come to us from the right hand (of power and authority)!"

Shakir
 
They shall say: Surely you used to come to us from the right side.

Dr. Ghali
 
They (The seduced) say, "Surely you used to come up to us from the right hand." (i.e. with the Truth).

Ayah  37:29  الأية
    +/- -/+  
قَالُوا بَل لَّمْ تَكُونُوا مُؤْمِنِينَ
Sahih International
 
The oppressors will say, "Rather, you [yourselves] were not believers,

Muhsin Khan
 
They will reply: "Nay, you yourselves were not believers.

Pickthall
 
They answer: Nay, but ye (yourselves) were not believers.

Yusuf Ali
 
They will reply: "Nay, ye yourselves had no Faith!

Shakir
 
They shall say: Nay, you (yourselves) were not believers;

Dr. Ghali
 
They say, "No indeed, but you were not believers.

Ayah  37:30  الأية
    +/- -/+  
وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَيْكُم مِّن سُلْطَانٍ ۖ بَلْ كُنتُمْ قَوْمًا طَاغِينَ
Sahih International
 
And we had over you no authority, but you were a transgressing people.

Muhsin Khan
 
"And we had no authority over you. Nay! But you were transgressing people (disobedient, polytheists, and disbelievers).

Pickthall
 
We had no power over you, but ye were wayward folk.

Yusuf Ali
 
"Nor had we any authority over you. Nay, it was ye who were a people in obstinate rebellion!

Shakir
 
And we had no authority over you, but you were an inordinate people;

Dr. Ghali
 
And in no way did we have any all- binding authority over you; no indeed, (but) you were an inordinate people."

Ayah  37:31  الأية
    +/- -/+  
فَحَقَّ عَلَيْنَا قَوْلُ رَبِّنَا ۖ إِنَّا لَذَائِقُونَ
Sahih International
 
So the word of our Lord has come into effect upon us; indeed, we will taste [punishment].

Muhsin Khan
 
"So now the Word of our Lord has been justified against us, that we shall certainly (have to) taste (the torment).

Pickthall
 
Now the Word of our Lord hath been fulfilled concerning us. Lo! we are about to taste (the doom).

Yusuf Ali
 
"So now has been proved true, against us, the word of our Lord that we shall indeed (have to) taste (the punishment of our sins).

Shakir
 
So the sentence of our Lord has come to pass against us: (now) we shall surely taste;

Dr. Ghali
 
"So, our Lord's Word (Literally: Saying) has come true against us; surely we are indeed tasting (it).

Ayah  37:32  الأية
    +/- -/+  
فَأَغْوَيْنَاكُمْ إِنَّا كُنَّا غَاوِينَ
Sahih International
 
And we led you to deviation; indeed, we were deviators."

Muhsin Khan
 
"So we led you astray because we were ourselves astray."

Pickthall
 
Thus we misled you. Lo! we were (ourselves) astray.

Yusuf Ali
 
"We led you astray: for truly we were ourselves astray."

Shakir
 
So we led you astray, for we ourselves were erring.

Dr. Ghali
 
So we have misguided you; surely we were (ourselves) misguided."

Ayah  37:33  الأية
    +/- -/+  
فَإِنَّهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ فِي الْعَذَابِ مُشْتَرِكُونَ
Sahih International
 
So indeed they, that Day, will be sharing in the punishment.

Muhsin Khan
 
Then verily, that Day, they will (all) share in the torment.

Pickthall
 
Then lo! this day they (both) are sharers in the doom.

Yusuf Ali
 
Truly, that Day, they will (all) share in the Penalty.

Shakir
 
So they shall on that day be sharers in the chastisement one with another.

Dr. Ghali
 
So, upon that Day, surely they are partners in the torment.

Ayah  37:34  الأية
    +/- -/+  
إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِالْمُجْرِمِينَ
Sahih International
 
Indeed, that is how We deal with the criminals.

Muhsin Khan
 
Certainly, that is how We deal with Al-Mujrimun (polytheists, sinners, criminals, the disobedient to Allah, etc.).

Pickthall
 
Lo! thus deal We with the guilty.

Yusuf Ali
 
Verily that is how We shall deal with Sinners.

Shakir
 
Surely thus do We deal with the guilty.

Dr. Ghali
 
Surely thus We perform against the criminals.

Ayah  37:35  الأية
    +/- -/+  
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ
Sahih International
 
Indeed they, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allah ," were arrogant

Muhsin Khan
 
Truly, when it was said to them: La ilaha ill-Allah "(none has the right to be worshipped but Allah)," they puffed themselves up with pride (i.e. denied it).

Pickthall
 
For when it was said unto them, There is no Allah save Allah, they were scornful

Yusuf Ali
 
For they, when they were told that there is no god except Allah, would puff themselves up with Pride,

Shakir
 
Surely they used to behave proudly when it was said to them: There is no god but Allah;

Dr. Ghali
 
Surely when it was said to them, "There is no god except Allah, " they were waxing proud.

Ayah  37:36  الأية
    +/- -/+  
وَيَقُولُونَ أَئِنَّا لَتَارِكُو آلِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرٍ مَّجْنُونٍ
Sahih International
 
And were saying, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?"

Muhsin Khan
 
And (they) said: "Are we going to abandon our aliha (gods) for the sake of a mad poet?

Pickthall
 
And said: Shall we forsake our gods for a mad poet?

Yusuf Ali
 
And say: "What! shall we give up our gods for the sake of a Poet possessed?"

Shakir
 
And to say: What! shall we indeed give up our gods for the sake of a mad poet?

Dr. Ghali
 
And they said, "Shall we surely be leaving indeed our gods for a mad poet?"

Ayah  37:37  الأية
    +/- -/+  
بَلْ جَاءَ بِالْحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ
Sahih International
 
Rather, the Prophet has come with the truth and confirmed the [previous] messengers.

Muhsin Khan
 
Nay! he (Muhammad SAW) has come with the truth (i.e. Allah's Religion - Islamic Monotheism and this Quran) and he confirms the Messengers (before him who brought Allah's religion - Islamic Monotheism).

Pickthall
 
Nay, but he brought the Truth, and he confirmed those sent (before him).

Yusuf Ali
 
Nay! he has come with the (very) Truth, and he confirms (the Message of) the messengers (before him).

Shakir
 
Nay: he has come with the truth and verified the messengers.

Dr. Ghali
 
No indeed, (but) he has come with the Truth and has sincere (faith) in the Emissaries.

Ayah  37:38  الأية
    +/- -/+  
إِنَّكُمْ لَذَائِقُو الْعَذَابِ الْأَلِيمِ
Sahih International
 
Indeed, you [disbelievers] will be tasters of the painful punishment,

Verily, you (pagans of Makkah) are going to taste the painful torment;

Lo! (now) verily ye taste the painful doom -

Ye shall indeed taste of the Grievous Penalty;-

Most surely you will taste the painful punishment.

Surely you will indeed be tasting the painful torment;

Ayah  37:39  الأية
    +/- -/+  
وَمَا تُجْزَوْنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
Sahih International
 
And you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do -

And you will be requited nothing except for what you used to do (evil deeds, sins, and Allah's disobedience which you used to do in this world);

Ye are requited naught save what ye did -

But it will be no more than the retribution of (the Evil) that ye have wrought;-

And you shall not be rewarded except (for) what you did.

And in no way will you be recompensed, except according to whatever you were doing.

Ayah  37:40  الأية

إِلَّا عِبَادَ اللهِ الْمُخْلَصِينَ
Sahih International
 
But not the chosen servants of Allah .

Save the chosen slaves of Allah (faithful, obedient, true believers of Islamic Monotheism).

Save single-minded slaves of Allah;

But the sincere (and devoted) Servants of Allah,-

Except for the most faithful bondmen of Allah.

أُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمْ رِزْقٌ مَّعْلُومٌ

Those will have a provision determined -

For them there will be a known provision (in Paradise).

There will be circulated among them a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring,

White and delicious to the drinkers;

لَا فِيهَا غَوْلٌ وَلَا هُمْ عَنْهَا يُنزَفُونَ

No bad effect is there in it, nor from it will they be intoxicated.

Neither they will have Ghoul (any kind of hurt, abdominal pain, headache, a sin, etc.) from that, nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom.

Wherein there is no headache nor are they made mad thereby.

Free from headiness; nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom.

There shall be no trouble in it, nor shall they be exhausted therewith.

Ayah  37:48  الأية

وَعِندَهُمْ قَاصِرَاتُ الطَّرْفِ عِينٌ

And with them will be women limiting [their] glances, with large, [beautiful] eyes,

And with them will be chaste females, restraining their glances (desiring none except their husbands), with wide and beautiful eyes.

And with them are those of modest gaze, with lovely eyes,

And besides them will be chaste women, restraining their glances, with big eyes (of wonder and beauty).

And with them shall be those who restrain the eyes, having beautiful eyes;

And in their presence are wide-eyed (maidens), restraining their glances.

Ayah  37:49  الأية

كَأَنَّهُنَّ بَيْضٌ مَّكْنُونٌ

As if they were [delicate] eggs, well-protected.

(Delicate and pure) as if they were (hidden) eggs (well) preserved.

(Pure) as they were hidden eggs (of the ostrich).

As if they were (delicate) eggs closely guarded.

As if they were eggs carefully protected.

Dr. Ghali
 
As if they were white nestled (jewels).

Ayah  37:50  الأية

فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ
Sahih International
 
And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other.

Then they will turn to one another, mutually questioning.

And some of them draw near unto others, mutually questioning.

Then they will turn to one another and question one another.

Then shall some of them advance to others, questioning each other.

So some of them come forward to others, (Literally: some (others) asking one another (questions).

Ayah  37:51  الأية

قَالَ قَائِلٌ مِّنْهُمْ إِنِّي كَانَ لِي قَرِينٌ
Sahih International
 
A speaker among them will say, "Indeed, I had a companion [on earth]

A speaker of them will say: "Verily, I had a companion (in the world),

A speaker of them saith: Lo! I had a comrade

Yusuf Ali
 
One of them will start the talk and say: "I had an intimate companion (on the earth),

A speaker from among them shall say: Surely I had a comrade of mine,

A speaker of them says, "Surely I used to have a comrade.

Ayah  37:52  الأية

يَقُولُ أَإِنَّكَ لَمِنَ الْمُصَدِّقِينَ
Sahih International
 
Who would say, 'Are you indeed of those who believe

Muhsin Khan
 
Who used to say: "Are you among those who believe (in resurrection after death).

Pickthall
 
Who used to say: Art thou in truth of those who put faith (in his words)?

Yusuf Ali
 
"Who used to say, 'what! art thou amongst those who bear witness to the Truth (of the Message)?

Who said: What! are you indeed of those who accept (the truth)?

He (always) said, Are you surely of the ones who indeed count it sincerely (verified)?

Ayah  37:53  الأية
    +/- -/+  
أَإِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَدِينُونَ
Sahih International
 
That when we have died and become dust and bones, we will indeed be recompensed?'"

Muhsin Khan
 
"(That) when we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed (be raised up) to receive reward or punishment (according to our deeds)?"

Pickthall
 
Can we, when we are dead and have become mere dust and bones - can we (then) verily be brought to book?

Yusuf Ali
 
"'When we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed receive rewards and punishments?'"

Shakir
 
What! when we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then be certainly brought to judgment?

Dr. Ghali
 
When we die and are dust and bones, will we surely be doomed (Or: judged) indeed?"

Ayah  37:54  الأية

قَالَ هَلْ أَنتُم مُّطَّلِعُونَ
Sahih International
 
He will say, "Would you [care to] look?"

(The man) said: "Will you look down?"

He saith: Will ye look?

Yusuf Ali
 
(A voice) said: "Would ye like to look down?"

Shakir
 
He shall say: Will you look on?

Dr. Ghali
 
He says, "Are you (all) viewing (him)?"

Ayah  37:55  الأية

فَاطَّلَعَ فَرَآهُ فِي سَوَاءِ الْجَحِيمِ
Sahih International
 
And he will look and see him in the midst of the Hellfire.

So he looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire.

Then looketh he and seeth him in the depth of hell.

Yusuf Ali
 
He looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire.

Shakir
 
Then he looked down and saw him in the midst of hell.

So he views (him), and then sees him in the (deepest) level of the Hell-Fire.

Ayah  37:56  الأية

قَالَ تَاللهِ إِن كِدتَّ لَتُرْدِينِ
Sahih International
 
He will say, "By Allah , you almost ruined me.

He said: "By Allah! You have nearly ruined me.

He saith: By Allah, thou verily didst all but cause my ruin,

Yusuf Ali
 
He said: "By Allah! thou wast little short of bringing me to perdition!

Shakir
 
He shall say: By Allah! you had almost caused me to perish;

Dr. Ghali
 
He says, "By Allah, (The Arabic is ta-llahi; which a stronger oath than the more usual wa-llahi) decidedly you were almost about to topple me down indeed.

Ayah  37:57  الأية
    +/- -/+  
وَلَوْلَا نِعْمَةُ رَبِّي لَكُنتُ مِنَ الْمُحْضَرِينَ
Sahih International
 
If not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been of those brought in [to Hell].

Muhsin Khan
 
"Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I would certainly have been among those brought forth (to Hell)."

Pickthall
 
And had it not been for the favour of my Lord, I too had been of those haled forth (to doom).

Yusuf Ali
 
"Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I should certainly have been among those brought (there)!

Shakir
 
And had it not been for the favor of my Lord, I would certainly have been among those brought up.

Dr. Ghali
 
And had it not been for the favor of my Lord, indeed I would have been among the ones presented forward.

Ayah  37:58  الأية

أَفَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَيِّتِينَ
Sahih International
 
Then, are we not to die

(Allah informs about that true believer that he said): "Are we then not to die (any more)?

Are we then not to die

"Is it (the case) that we shall not die,

Is it then that we are not going to die,

Ayah  37:59  الأية

إِلَّا مَوْتَتَنَا الْأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ

Except for our first death, and we will not be punished?"

"Except our first death, and we shall not be punished? (after we have entered Paradise)."

Saving our former death, and are we not to be punished?

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ

Indeed, this is the great attainment.

Truly, this is the supreme success!

Lo! this is the supreme triumph.

Verily this is the supreme achievement!

Most surely this is the mighty achievement.

لِمِثْلِ هَٰذَا فَلْيَعْمَلِ الْعَامِلُونَ

For the like of this let the workers [on earth] work.

For the like of this let the workers work.

For the like of this, then, let the workers work.

For the like of this let all strive, who wish to strive.

Ayah  37:62  الأية

أَذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ نُّزُلًا أَمْ شَجَرَةُ الزَّقُّومِ

Is Paradise a better accommodation or the tree of zaqqum?

Is that (Paradise) better entertainment or the tree of Zaqqum (a horrible tree in Hell)?

Is this better as a welcome, or the tree of Zaqqum?

Is that the better entertainment or the Tree of Zaqqum?

Is this better as an entertainment or the tree of Zaqqum?

Is this a more charitable (i.e., better) hospitality, or even the Tree of Az-Zaqqum?

Ayah  37:63  الأية

إِنَّا جَعَلْنَاهَا فِتْنَةً لِّلظَّالِمِينَ
Sahih International
 
Indeed, We have made it a torment for the wrongdoers.

Truly We have made it (as) a trail for the Zalimun (polytheists, disbelievers, wrong-doers, etc.).

Pickthall
 
Lo! We have appointed it a torment for wrong-doers.

Yusuf Ali
 
For We have truly made it (as) a trial for the wrong-doers.

Shakir
 
Surely We have made it to be a trial to the unjust.

Dr. Ghali
 
Surely We have made it as a temptation (Or: trial) for the unjust.

Ayah  37:64  الأية

إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةٌ تَخْرُجُ فِي أَصْلِ الْجَحِيمِ
Sahih International
 
Indeed, it is a tree issuing from the bottom of the Hellfire,

Muhsin Khan
 
Verily, it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hell-fire,

Pickthall
 
Lo! it is a tree that springeth in the heart of hell.

Yusuf Ali
 
For it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hell-Fire:

Surely it is a tree that-grows in the bottom of the hell;

Surely it is a tree that comes out (Literally: goes out) in the root of Hell-Fire;

Ayah  37:65  الأية

طَلْعُهَا كَأَنَّهُ رُءُوسُ الشَّيَاطِينِ
Sahih International
 
Its emerging fruit as if it was heads of the devils.

Muhsin Khan
 
The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of Shayatin (devils);

Its crop is as it were the heads of devils

The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of devils:

Its produce is as it were the heads of the serpents.

Dr. Ghali
 
Its spathes are as the heads of Shayatun. (Ever-vicious (ones), i.e., devils)

Ayah  37:66  الأية
    +/- -/+  
فَإِنَّهُمْ لَآكِلُونَ مِنْهَا فَمَالِئُونَ مِنْهَا الْبُطُونَ
Sahih International
 
And indeed, they will eat from it and fill with it their bellies.

Truly, they will eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith.

Pickthall
 
And lo! they verily must eat thereof, and fill (their) bellies therewith.

Yusuf Ali
 
Truly they will eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith.

Then most surely they shall eat of it and fill (their) bellies with it.

Then surely they will indeed be eating of it, and so of it they will be filling their bellies.

Ayah  37:67  الأية

ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمْ عَلَيْهَا لَشَوْبًا مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ
Sahih International
 
Then indeed, they will have after it a mixture of scalding water.

Then on the top of that they will be given boiling water to drink so that it becomes a mixture (of boiling water and Zaqqum in their bellies).

And afterward, lo! thereupon they have a drink of boiling water

Then on top of that they will be given a mixture made of boiling water.

Then most surely they shall have after it to drink of a mixture prepared in boiling water.

Thereafter on top of it surely they will have indeed an admixture of scalding (water),

Ayah  37:68  الأية

ثُمَّ إِنَّ مَرْجِعَهُمْ لَإِلَى الْجَحِيمِ

Then indeed, their return will be to the Hellfire.

Then thereafter, verily, their return is to the flaming fire of Hell.

And afterward, lo! their return is surely unto hell.

Then shall their return be to the (Blazing) Fire.

Then most surely their return shall be to hell.

Thereafter surely their return indeed is to Hell-Fire.

Ayah  37:69  الأية

إِنَّهُمْ أَلْفَوْا آبَاءَهُمْ ضَالِّينَ

Indeed they found their fathers astray.

Verily, they found their fathers on the wrong path;

They indeed found their fathers astray,

Truly they found their fathers on the wrong Path;

Surely they found their fathers going astray,

Surely they came upon their fathers erring,

Ayah  37:70  الأية

فَهُمْ عَلَىٰ آثَارِهِمْ يُهْرَعُونَ

So they hastened [to follow] in their footsteps.

So they (too) made haste to follow in their footsteps!

But they make haste (to follow) in their footsteps.

So they (too) were rushed down on their footsteps!

So in their footsteps they are being hastened on.

So they are made to hurry in their tracks.

Ayah  37:71  الأية

وَلَقَدْ ضَلَّ قَبْلَهُمْ أَكْثَرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ

And there had already strayed before them most of the former peoples,

And indeed most of the men of old went astray before them;

And verily most of the men of old went astray before them,

And truly before them, many of the ancients went astray;-

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا فِيهِم مُّنذِرِينَ

And We had already sent among them warners.

And indeed We sent among them warners (Messengers);

And verily We sent among them warners.

But We sent aforetime, among them, (messengers) to admonish them;-

And certainly We sent among them warners.

Ayah  37:73  الأية

فَانظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الْمُنذَرِينَ

Then look how was the end of those who were warned -

Then see what was the end of those who were warned (but heeded not).

Then see the nature of the consequence for those warned,

Then see what was the end of those who were admonished (but heeded not),-

So look into how was the end of the warned people,

إِلَّا عِبَادَ اللهِ الْمُخْلَصِينَ

But not the chosen servants of Allah .

وَلَقَدْ نَادَانَا نُوحٌ فَلَنِعْمَ الْمُجِيبُونَ

And Noah had certainly called Us, and [We are] the best of responders.

And indeed Nuh (Noah) invoked Us, and We are the Best of those who answer (the request).

And Noah verily prayed unto Us, and gracious was the Hearer of his prayer

Yusuf Ali
 
(In the days of old), Noah cried to Us, and We are the best to hear prayer.

And Nuh did certainly call upon Us, and most excellent answerer of prayer are We.

And indeed, Nuh (Noah) already called out to Us; (i.e., Allah, through the Angels) so how excellent indeed were The Answerers!

Ayah  37:76  الأية

وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ وَأَهْلَهُ مِنَ الْكَرْبِ الْعَظِيمِ
Sahih International
 
And We saved him and his family from the great affliction.

And We rescued him and his family from the great distress (i.e. drowning),

And We saved him and his household from the great distress,

And We delivered him and his people from the Great Calamity,
