1st Ayah 1 الأية ١الأوليبِسْم ِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
إِذَا وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ
Itha waqaAAati alwaqiAAat

When the Occurrence occurs,

When the Event (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) befalls.

Ayah 56:2 الأية
لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ
Laysa liwaqAAatiha kathiba

There is, at its occurrence, no denial.

And there can be no denying of its befalling.

There is no denying that it will befall -

Then will no (soul) entertain falsehood concerning its coming.

There is no belying its coming to pass--

خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ
Khafidatun rafiAAa

It will bring down [some] and raise up [others].

(Many) will it bring low; (many) will it exalt;

إِذَا رُجَّتِ الْأَرْضُ رَجًّا
Itha rujjati al-ardu rajja

When the earth is shaken with convulsion

When the earth will be shaken with a terrible shake.

When the earth is shaken with a shock

When the earth shall be shaken to its depths,

When the earth shall be shaken with a (severe) shaking,

Ayah 56:5 الأية
وَبُسَّتِ الْجِبَالُ بَسًّا
Wabussati aljibalu bassa

And the mountains are broken down, crumbling

And the mountains will be powdered to dust.

And the hills are ground to powder

And the mountains shall be crumbled to atoms,

And the mountains shall be made to crumble with (an awful) crumbling,

Ayah 56:6 الأية
فَكَانَتْ هَبَاءً مُّنبَثًّا
Fakanat habaan munbaththa

And become dust dispersing.

So that they will become floating dust particles.

So that they become a scattered dust,

Becoming dust scattered abroad,

So that they shall be as scattered dust.

Ayah 56:7 الأية
وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَاجًا ثَلَاثَةً
Wakuntum azwajan thalatha

And you become [of] three kinds:

And you (all) will be in three kinds (i.e. separate groups).

And ye will be three kinds:

And ye shall be sorted out into three classes.

And you shall be three sorts.

And you will be three pairs,

فَأَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ
Faas-habu almaymanati maas-habu almaymanat

Then the companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?
Muhsin Khan
So those on the Right Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Records in their
right hands), Who will be those on the Right Hand? (As a respect for them,
because they will enter Paradise).

(First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand?
Yusuf Ali
Then (there will be) the Companions of the Right Hand;- What will be the
Companions of the Right Hand?

Then (as to) the companions of the right hand; how happy are the companions of
the right hand!

So (as for) the companions of the Rightness, (Or: the Right Hand) what (will
become) of the companions of the Rightness?

Ayah 56:9 الأية
وَأَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ
Waas-habu almash-amati maas-habu almash-amat
Sahih International
And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left?
Muhsin Khan
And those on the Left Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Record in their
left hands), Who will be those on the Left Hand? (As a disgrace for them,
because they will enter Hell).

And (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand?

And the Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left
Hand?

And (as to) the companions of the left hand; how wretched are the companions of
the left hand!

And the companions of the Sinister (befalling), what (will become) of the
companions of the Sinister (befalling)? (Or: the Left Hand)

Ayah 56:10 الأية
وَالسَّابِقُونَ السَّابِقُونَ
Wassabiqoona assabiqoon
Sahih International
And the forerunners, the forerunners -
Muhsin Khan
And those foremost [(in Islamic Faith of Monotheism and in performing righteous
deeds) in the life of this world on the very first call for to embrace Islam,]
will be foremost (in Paradise).

And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race:

And those Foremost (in Faith) will be Foremost (in the Hereafter).

And the foremost are the foremost,
Dr. Ghali
And the Outstrippers, (i.e., those who precede others) the Outstrippers-

Ayah 56:11 الأية
أُولَٰئِكَ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ
Ola-ika almuqarraboon
Sahih International
Those are the ones brought near [to Allah ]

These will be those nearest to Allah.

Those are they who will be brought nigh

These will be those Nearest to Allah:

These are they who are drawn nigh (to Allah),

فِي جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ

In the Gardens of Pleasure,

A [large] company of the former peoples

A multitude of those (foremost) will be from the first generations (who embraced
Islam).

وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ الْآخِرِينَ

On thrones woven [with ornament],

Reclining on them, facing each other.

يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَانٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ

There will circulate among them young boys made eternal

They will be served by immortal boys,

بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ
Bi-akwabin waabareeqa waka/sinmin maAAeen

With vessels, pitchers and a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring -

With cups, and jugs, and a glass from the flowing wine,

With bowls and ewers and a cup from a pure spring

With goblets, (shining) beakers, and cups (filled) out of clear-flowing
fountains:

Ayah 56:19 الأية
لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ
La yusaddaAAoona AAanhawala yunzifoon

No headache will they have therefrom, nor will they be intoxicated -

Wherefrom they will get neither any aching of the head, nor any intoxication.

Wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness,

No after-ache will they receive therefrom, nor will they suffer intoxication:

They shall not be affected with headache thereby, nor shall they get exhausted,

وَفَاكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ

And fruit of what they select

And fruit; that they may choose.

وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ

And the meat of fowl, from whatever they desire.

And the flesh of fowls that they desire.

And flesh of fowls that they desire.

وَحُورٌ عِينٌ

And [for them are] fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes,

And (there will be) Houris (fair females) with wide, lovely eyes (as wives for
the pious),

And (there are) fair ones with wide, lovely eyes,

And (there will be) Companions with beautiful, big, and lustrous eyes,-

Ayah 56:23 الأية
كَأَمْثَالِ اللُّؤْلُؤِ الْمَكْنُونِ
Kaamthali allu/lui almaknoon

The likenesses of pearls well-protected,

Like unto preserved pearls.

Like unto hidden pearls,

Like unto Pearls well-guarded.

The like of the hidden pearls:

Ayah 56:24 الأية
جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ
Jazaan bima kanooyaAAmaloon

As reward for what they used to do.

لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا
La yasmaAAoona feeha laghwanwala ta/theema

They will not hear therein ill speech or commission of sin -

No Laghw (dirty, false, evil vain talk) will they hear therein, nor any sinful
speech (like backbiting, etc.).

There hear they no vain speaking nor recrimination

Not frivolity will they hear therein, nor any taint of ill,-

They shall not hear therein vain or sinful discourse,

Therein they will not hear any idle talk, nor any cause for vice,

Ayah 56:26 الأية
إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَامًا سَلَامًا
Illa qeelan salaman salama

Only a saying: "Peace, peace."

But only the saying of: Salam!, Salam! (greetings with peace) !

(Naught) but the saying: Peace, (and again) Peace.

Only the saying, "Peace! Peace".

And [banana] trees layered [with fruit]

Whose season is not limited, and their supply will not be cut off,

وَفُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ
Wafurushin marfooAAa

And [upon] beds raised high.

And on couches or thrones, raised high.

And on Thrones (of Dignity), raised high.

And exalted thrones.

إِنَّا أَنشَأْنَاهُنَّ إِنشَاءً

Indeed, We have produced the women of Paradise in a [new] creation

Verily, We have created them (maidens) of special creation.

Lo! We have created them a (new) creation

We have created (their Companions) of special creation.

Surely We have made them to grow into a (new) growth,

فَجَعَلْنَاهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا
FajaAAalnahunna abkara

And made them virgins,

Waas-habu ashshimalima as-habu ashshimal

And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left?

And those on the Left Hand Who will be those on the Left Hand?

And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand?

The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand?

فِي سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ

[They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water

In fierce hot wind and boiling water,

(They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water,

(They will be) in pestilential wind, and scalding water,

وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ
Wathillin min yahmoom

And a shade of black smoke,

And shadow of black smoke,

And shadow of black smoke,

And in the shades of Black Smoke:

And the shade of black smoke,

And the shade of a Smoking Blaze,

Ayah 56:44 الأية
لَّا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ
La baridin wala kareem
Sahih International
Neither cool nor beneficial.

(That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good,

Neither cool nor refreshing.
Yusuf Ali
Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please:

Neither cool nor honorable.
Dr. Ghali
Neither cool, nor refreshing (Literally: honorable).

Ayah 56:45 الأية
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ
Innahum kanoo qabla thalikamutrafeen
Sahih International
Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence,

Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury,

Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury

For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury),

Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty.

Surely they were before that (living) in ease and luxury.

Ayah 56:46 الأية
وَكَانُوا يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى الْحِنثِ الْعَظِيمِ
Wakanoo yusirroona AAalaalhinthi alAAatheem
Sahih International
And they used to persist in the great violation,

And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah,
committing murders and other crimes, etc.)

And used to persist in the awful sin.

And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme!

And they persisted in the great violation.

And they used to persist in the monstrous vileness;

Ayah 56:47 الأية
وَكَانُوا يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا
لَمَبْعُوثُونَ
Wakanoo yaqooloona a-itha mitnawakunna turaban waAAithamana-inna lamabAAoothoon
Sahih International
And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to
be resurrected?
Muhsin Khan
And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then
indeed be resurrected?

And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we
then, forsooth, be raised again,

And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we
then indeed be raised up again?-

And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we
then indeed be raised?
Dr. Ghali
And they used to say, "When we die and are dust and bones, will we surely be
made to rise again?

Ayah 56:48 الأية
أَوَآبَاؤُنَا الْأَوَّلُونَ
Awa abaona al-awwaloon
Sahih International
And our forefathers [as well]?"

"And also our forefathers?"

And also our forefathers?

"(We) and our fathers of old?"

Or our fathers of yore?
Dr. Ghali
And (also) our earliest fathers?"

Ayah 56:49 الأية
قُلْ إِنَّ الْأَوَّلِينَ وَالْآخِرِينَ
Qul inna al-awwaleena wal-akhireen
Sahih International
Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples

Say (O Muhammad SAW): "(Yes) verily, those of old, and those of later times.

Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time

Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times,

Say: The first and the last,
Dr. Ghali
Say, (This is addressed to the Prophet) "Surely the earliest people and the
later.

Ayah 56:50 الأية
لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَاتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ
LamajmooAAoona ila meeqatiyawmin maAAloom
Sahih International
Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day."
Muhsin Khan
"All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day.
Pickthall
Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day.
Yusuf Ali
"All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day
well-known.
Shakir
Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day.
Dr. Ghali
Will indeed be gathered to the fixed time of a known Day.

Ayah 56:51 الأية
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا الضَّالُّونَ الْمُكَذِّبُونَ
Thumma innakum ayyuha addalloonaalmukaththiboon
Sahih International
Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers,

"Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)!

Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers,
Yusuf Ali
"Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!-

Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie!
Dr. Ghali
Thereafter, surely you, you erring ones, the beliers,

Ayah 56:52 الأية
لَآكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِّن زَقُّومٍ
Laakiloona min shajarin min zaqqoom
Sahih International
Will be eating from trees of zaqqum
Muhsin Khan
"You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum.
Pickthall
Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum
Yusuf Ali
"Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum.
Shakir
Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom,
Dr. Ghali
Indeed you will eat of the trees of Zaqqum;

Ayah 56:53 الأية
فَمَالِئُونَ مِنْهَا الْبُطُونَ
Famali-oona minha albutoon
Sahih International
And filling with it your bellies

"Then you will fill your bellies therewith,

And will fill your bellies therewith;

"Then will ye fill your insides therewith,

And fill (your) bellies with it;

So you will be filling therewith (your) bellies.

Ayah 56:54 الأية
فَشَارِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْحَمِيمِ
Fashariboona AAalayhi mina alhameem
Sahih International
And drinking on top of it from scalding water

"And drink boiling water on top of it,
Pickthall
And thereon ye will drink of boiling water,
Yusuf Ali
"And drink Boiling Water on top of it:

Then drink over it of boiling water;
Dr. Ghali
Then you will be drinking thereon of scalding water;

Ayah 56:55 الأية
فَشَارِبُونَ شُرْبَ الْهِيمِ
Fashariboona shurba alheem
Sahih International
And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels.

"So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!"
Pickthall
Drinking even as the camel drinketh.
Yusuf Ali
"Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!"
Shakir
And drink as drinks the thirsty camel.
Dr. Ghali
So you will be drinking (like) the drinking of diseased camels wandering with
thirst."

Ayah 56:56 الأية
هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ الدِّينِ
Hatha nuzuluhum yawma addeen
Sahih International
That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense.
Muhsin Khan
That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense!
Pickthall
This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment.
Yusuf Ali
Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital!
Shakir
This is their entertainment on the day of requital.
Dr. Ghali
This is their hospitality on the Day of Doom.

Ayah 56:57 الأية
نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَاكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ
Nahnu khalaqnakum falawlatusaddiqoon
Sahih International
We have created you, so why do you not believe?
Muhsin Khan
We created you, then why do you believe not?
Pickthall
We created you. Will ye then admit the truth?
Yusuf Ali
It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth?
Shakir
We have created you, why do you not then assent?
Dr. Ghali
We, Ever We, created you. Would you then sincerely admit (the Truth)?

Ayah 56:58 الأية
أَفَرَأَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ
Afaraaytum ma tumnoon
Sahih International
Have you seen that which you emit?
Muhsin Khan
Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit.
Pickthall
Have ye seen that which ye emit?
Yusuf Ali
Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,-
Shakir
Have you considered the seed?
Dr. Ghali
So, have you then seen what you ejaculate?

Ayah 56:59 الأية
أَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُ أَمْ نَحْنُ الْخَالِقُونَ
Aantum takhluqoonahu am nahnu alkhaliqoon
Sahih International
Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator?
Muhsin Khan
Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or
are We the Creator?

Do ye create it or are We the Creator?
Yusuf Ali
Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators?
Shakir
Is it you that create it or are We the creators?
Dr. Ghali
Is it you who create it, or even are We the Creators?

Ayah 56:60 الأية
نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ الْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ
Nahnu qaddarna baynakumualmawta wama nahnu bimasbooqeen
Sahih International
We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone
Muhsin Khan
We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable,
Pickthall
We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun,
Yusuf Ali
We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated
Shakir
We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome,
Dr. Ghali
We, Ever We, have determined among you Death; and in no way are We, Ever We,
outstripped,

Ayah 56:61 الأية
عَلَىٰ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَالَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِي مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
AAala an nubaddila amthalakumwanunshi-akum fee ma la taAAlamoon
Sahih International
In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you
do not know.
Muhsin Khan
To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not.
Pickthall
That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not.
Yusuf Ali
from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not.
Shakir
In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into
what you know not.
Dr. Ghali
(So) that We may exchange the likes of you and bring you into being (again in a
fashion) you do not know.

Ayah 56:62 الأية
وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ النَّشْأَةَ الْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ
Walaqad AAalimtumu annash-ata al-oolafalawla tathakkaroon
Sahih International
And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember?
Muhsin Khan
And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation
of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed?
Pickthall
And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect?
Yusuf Ali
And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not
celebrate His praises?
Shakir
And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind?
Dr. Ghali
And indeed you have already known the earliest bringing into being; (if) had you
(known), you would have been mindful!

Ayah 56:63 الأية
أَفَرَأَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ
Afaraaytum ma tahruthoon
Sahih International
And have you seen that [seed] which you sow?
Muhsin Khan
Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground.
Pickthall
Have ye seen that which ye cultivate?
Yusuf Ali
See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground?
Shakir
Have you considered what you sow?
Dr. Ghali
Have you then seen (whatever) you till?

Ayah 56:64 الأية
أَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُ أَمْ نَحْنُ الزَّارِعُونَ
Aantum tazraAAoonahu am nahnu azzariAAoon
Sahih International
Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower?
Muhsin Khan
Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower?
Pickthall
Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer?
Yusuf Ali
Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause?
Shakir
Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth?
Dr. Ghali
Is it you who plant it or are We, Ever We, the Planters?

Ayah 56:65 الأية
لَوْ نَشَاءُ لَجَعَلْنَاهُ حُطَامًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ
Law nashao lajaAAalnahu hutamanfathaltum tafakkahoon
Sahih International
If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder,
Muhsin Khan
Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful
(or left in wonderment).
Pickthall
If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim:
Yusuf Ali
Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in
wonderment,
Shakir
If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then
would you begin tb lament:
Dr. Ghali
If We had (so) decided We would indeed have made it crushed to pieces; then you
would linger on (bitterly) exclaiming,

Ayah 56:66 الأية
إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ
Inna lamughramoon
Sahih International
[Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt;
Muhsin Khan
(Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any
profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)!
[See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219]
Pickthall
Lo! we are laden with debt!
Yusuf Ali
(Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing):
Shakir
Surely we are burdened with debt:
Dr. Ghali
"Surely we are indeed penalized (for debt);

Ayah 56:67 الأية
بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ
Bal nahnu mahroomoon
Sahih International
Rather, we have been deprived."
Muhsin Khan
"Nay, but we are deprived!"
Pickthall
Nay, but we are deprived!
Yusuf Ali
"Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)"
Shakir
Nay! we are deprived.
Dr. Ghali
No indeed, (but) we are dispossessed!"

Ayah 56:68 الأية
أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ الْمَاءَ الَّذِي تَشْرَبُونَ
Afaraaytumu almaa allatheetashraboon
Sahih International
And have you seen the water that you drink?
Muhsin Khan
Tell Me! The water that you drink.
Pickthall
Have ye observed the water which ye drink?
Yusuf Ali
See ye the water which ye drink?
Shakir
Have you considered the water which you drink?
Dr. Ghali
Have you then seen the water you drink?

Ayah 56:69 الأية
أَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ الْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنزِلُونَ
Aantum anzaltumoohu mina almuzni am nahnualmunziloon
Sahih International
Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down?
Muhsin Khan
Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of
it to come down?
Pickthall
Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder?
Yusuf Ali
Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We?
Shakir
Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders?
Dr. Ghali
Is it you who have sent it down from the rainy clouds or are We, Ever We, The
Senders down?

Ayah 56:70 الأية
لَوْ نَشَاءُ جَعَلْنَاهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ
Law nashao jaAAalnahu ojajanfalawla tashkuroon
Sahih International
If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful?
Muhsin Khan
If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you
not give thanks (to Allah)?
Pickthall
If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks?
Yusuf Ali
Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not
give thanks?
Shakir
If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks?
Dr. Ghali
If We had (so) decided, We would have made it bitter; so had you only thanked
(Us)!

Ayah 56:71 الأية
أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ النَّارَ الَّتِي تُورُونَ
Afaraaytumu annara allateetooroon
Sahih International
And have you seen the fire that you ignite?
Muhsin Khan
Tell Me! The fire which you kindle,
Pickthall
Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out;
Yusuf Ali
See ye the Fire which ye kindle?
Shakir
Have you considered the fire which you strike?
Dr. Ghali
Have you then seen the fire you flare up?

Ayah 56:72 الأية
أَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَا أَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنشِئُونَ
Aantum ansha/tum shajarataha am nahnualmunshi-oon
Sahih International
Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer?
Muhsin Khan
Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower?
Pickthall
Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower?
Yusuf Ali
Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it?
Shakir
Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers?
Dr. Ghali
Is it you who brought its tree into being, or are We, Ever We, The Bringers into
being?

Ayah 56:73 الأية
نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَاهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَاعًا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ
Nahnu jaAAalnaha tathkiratanwamataAAan lilmuqween
Sahih International
We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers,
Muhsin Khan
We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article
of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world).
Pickthall
We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the
wilderness.
Yusuf Ali
We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and
convenience for the denizens of deserts.
Shakir
We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert.
Dr. Ghali
We, Ever We, have made it for a Reminder and an enjoyment for the denizens in
the desert.

Ayah 56:74 الأية
فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ
Fasabbih bismi rabbika alAAatheem
Sahih International
So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
Muhsin Khan
Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.
Pickthall
Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous.
Yusuf Ali
Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme!
Shakir
Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great.
Dr. Ghali
So extol with the Name of your Lord, The Ever-Magnificent!

Ayah 56:75 الأية
فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَاقِعِ النُّجُومِ
Fala oqsimu bimawaqiAAi annujoom
Sahih International
Then I swear by the setting of the stars,
Muhsin Khan
So I swear by Mawaqi (setting or the mansions, etc.) of the stars (they
traverse).
Pickthall
Nay, I swear by the places of the stars -
Yusuf Ali
Furthermore I call to witness the setting of the Stars,-
Shakir
But nay! I swear by the falling of stars;
Dr. Ghali
Then no! I swear by the sites of the stars-
|
Ayah 56:76 الأية
وَإِنَّهُ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ
Wa-innahu laqasamun law taAAlamoona AAatheem
Sahih International
And indeed, it is an oath - if you could know - [most] great.
Muhsin Khan
And verily, that is indeed a great oath, if you but know.
Pickthall
And lo! that verily is a tremendous oath, if ye but knew -
Yusuf Ali
And that is indeed a mighty adjuration if ye but knew,-
Shakir
And most surely it is a very great oath if you only knew;
Dr. Ghali
And surely it is indeed a tremendous oath, if you only know (it)-
|
Ayah 56:77 الأية
إِنَّهُ لَقُرْآنٌ كَرِيمٌ
Innahu laqur-anun kareem
Sahih International
Indeed, it is a noble Qur'an
Muhsin Khan
That (this) is indeed an honourable recital (the Noble Quran).
Pickthall
That (this) is indeed a noble Qur'an
Yusuf Ali
That this is indeed a qur'an Most Honourable,
Shakir
Most surely it is an honored Quran,
Dr. Ghali
Surely it is indeed an honorable Qur'an,
|
Ayah 56:78 الأية
فِي كِتَابٍ مَّكْنُونٍ
Fee kitabin maknoon
Sahih International
In a Register well-protected;

In a Book well-guarded (with Allah in the heaven i.e. Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz).

In a Book kept hidden
Yusuf Ali
In Book well-guarded,
Shakir
In a book that is protected
Dr. Ghali
In a nestled Book,

Ayah 56:79 الأية
لَّا يَمَسُّهُ إِلَّا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ
La yamassuhu illa almutahharoon
Sahih International
None touch it except the purified.
Muhsin Khan
Which (that Book with Allah) none can touch but the purified (i.e. the angels).
Pickthall
Which none toucheth save the purified,
Yusuf Ali
Which none shall touch but those who are clean:
Shakir
None shall touch it save the purified ones.
Dr. Ghali
Which none shall touch except the purified,
|
Ayah 56:80 الأية
تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Tanzeelun min rabbi alAAalameen
Sahih International
[It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.
Muhsin Khan
A Revelation (this Quran) from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all
that exists).
Pickthall
A revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.
Yusuf Ali
A Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.
Shakir
A revelation by the Lord of the worlds.
Dr. Ghali
A successive sending down from The Lord of the worlds.

Ayah 56:81 الأية
أَفَبِهَٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ
Afabihatha alhadeethi antummudhinoon
Sahih International
Then is it to this statement that you are indifferent
Muhsin Khan
Is it such a talk (this Quran) that you (disbelievers) deny?
Pickthall
Is it this Statement that ye scorn,
Yusuf Ali
Is it such a Message that ye would hold in light esteem?
Shakir
Do you then hold this announcement in contempt?
Dr. Ghali
Is it, then, that you (i.e., the disbelievers) are dissimulating with this
Discourse?

Ayah 56:82 الأية
وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ
WatajAAaloona rizqakum annakum tukaththiboon
Sahih International
And make [the thanks for] your provision that you deny [the Provider]?
Muhsin Khan
And instead (of thanking Allah) for the provision He gives you, on the contrary,
you deny Him (by disbelief)!
Pickthall
And make denial thereof your livelihood?
Yusuf Ali
And have ye made it your livelihood that ye should declare it false?
Shakir
And to give (it) the lie you make your means of subsistence.
Dr. Ghali
And making your provision (for livelihood) that you cry lies?
|
Ayah 56:83 الأية
فَلَوْلَا إِذَا بَلَغَتِ الْحُلْقُومَ
Falawla itha balaghati alhulqoom
Sahih International
Then why, when the soul at death reaches the throat
Muhsin Khan
Then why do you not (intervene) when (the soul of a dying person) reaches the
throat?
Pickthall
Why, then, when (the soul) cometh up to the throat (of the dying)
Yusuf Ali
Then why do ye not (intervene) when (the soul of the dying man) reaches the
throat,-
Shakir
Why is it not then that when it (soul) comes up to the throat,
Dr. Ghali
Then had it been that, when (the self) (i.e., the self of the dying person)
reaches the gullet (of the dying)-

Ayah 56:84 الأية
وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنظُرُونَ
Waantum heena-ithin tanthuroona
Sahih International
And you are at that time looking on -

And you at the moment are looking on,
Pickthall
And ye are at that moment looking
Yusuf Ali
And ye the while (sit) looking on,-
Shakir
And you at that time look on--
Dr. Ghali
And you at that while of time (sit) looking on,

Ayah 56:85 الأية
وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ
Wanahnu aqrabu ilayhi minkum walakinla tubsiroon
Sahih International
And Our angels are nearer to him than you, but you do not see -
Muhsin Khan
But We (i.e. Our angels who take the soul) are nearer to him than you, but you
see not, [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol.27, Page 209]
Pickthall
- And We are nearer unto him than ye are, but ye see not -
Yusuf Ali
But We are nearer to him than ye, and yet see not,-
Shakir
And We are nearer to it than you, but you do not see--
Dr. Ghali
And We are nearer to him than you, but you do not behold-
|
Ayah 56:86 الأية
فَلَوْلَا إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ
Falawla in kuntum ghayra madeeneen
Sahih International
Then why do you not, if you are not to be recompensed,
Muhsin Khan
Then why do you not, if you are exempt from the reckoning and recompense
(punishment, etc.)
Pickthall
Why then, if ye are not in bondage (unto Us),
Yusuf Ali
Then why do ye not,- If you are exempt from (future) account,-
Shakir
Then why is it not-- if you are not held under authority--
Dr. Ghali
Then had you been (sure) that, in case you are other than being doomed,

Ayah 56:87 الأية
تَرْجِعُونَهَا إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ
TarjiAAoonaha in kuntum sadiqeen
Sahih International
Bring it back, if you should be truthful?
Muhsin Khan
Bring back the soul (to its body), if you are truthful?
Pickthall
Do ye not force it back, if ye are truthful?
Yusuf Ali
Call back the soul, if ye are true (in the claim of independence)?
Shakir
That you send it (not) back-- if you are truthful?
Dr. Ghali
Make it return, if (ever) you are sincere?
|
Ayah 56:88 الأية
فَأَمَّا إِن كَانَ مِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ
Faamma in kana minaalmuqarrabeen
Sahih International
And if the deceased was of those brought near to Allah ,
Muhsin Khan
Then, if he (the dying person) be of the Muqarrabun (those brought near to
Allah),
Pickthall
Thus if he is of those brought nigh,
Yusuf Ali
Thus, then, if he be of those Nearest to Allah,
Shakir
Then if he is one of those drawn nigh (to Allah),
Dr. Ghali
So, as for him who in case he is of those brought near (to Us),

Ayah 56:89 الأية
فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ
Farawhun warayhanun wajannatunaAAeem
Sahih International
Then [for him is] rest and bounty and a garden of pleasure.
Muhsin Khan
(There is for him) rest and provision, and a Garden of delights (Paradise).
Pickthall
Then breath of life, and plenty, and a Garden of delight.
Yusuf Ali
(There is for him) Rest and Satisfaction, and a Garden of Delights.
Shakir
Then happiness and bounty and a garden of bliss.
Dr. Ghali
Then (there will be) relief, and soothing comfort, and a Garden of Bliss;

Ayah 56:90 الأية
وَأَمَّا إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ
Waamma in kana min as-habialyameen
Sahih International
And if he was of the companions of the right,
Muhsin Khan
And if he (the dying person) be of those on the Right Hand,
Pickthall
And if he is of those on the right hand,
Yusuf Ali
And if he be of the Companions of the Right Hand,
Shakir
And if he is one of those on the right hand,
Dr. Ghali
And as for him who in case he is of the companions of the Right,

Ayah 56:91 الأية
فَسَلَامٌ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ
Fasalamun laka min as-habialyameen
Sahih International
Then [the angels will say], "Peace for you; [you are] from the companions of the
right."
Muhsin Khan
Then there is safety and peace (from the Punishment of Allah) for (you as you
are from) those on the Right Hand.
Pickthall
Then (the greeting) "Peace be unto thee" from those on the right hand.
Yusuf Ali
(For him is the salutation), "Peace be unto thee", from the Companions of the
Right Hand.
Shakir
Then peace to you from those on the right hand.
Dr. Ghali
Then (it will be said), "Peace be upon you; (you are) one of the companions of
the Right."

Ayah 56:92 الأية
وَأَمَّا إِن كَانَ مِنَ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ الضَّالِّينَ
Waamma in kana mina almukaththibeenaaddalleen
Sahih International
But if he was of the deniers [who were] astray,
Muhsin Khan
But if he (the dying person) be of the denying (of the Resurrection), the erring
(away from the Right Path of Islamic Monotheism),
Pickthall
But if he is of the rejecters, the erring,
Yusuf Ali
And if he be of those who treat (Truth) as Falsehood, who go wrong,
Shakir
And if he is one of the rejecters, the erring ones,
Dr. Ghali
And as for him who in case he is of the beliers (and) the erring,

Ayah 56:93 الأية
فَنُزُلٌ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ
Fanuzulun min hameem
Sahih International
Then [for him is] accommodation of scalding water
Muhsin Khan
Then for him is entertainment with boiling water.
Pickthall
Then the welcome will be boiling water
Yusuf Ali
For him is Entertainment with Boiling Water.
Shakir
He shall have an entertainment of boiling water,
Dr. Ghali
Then (there will be) hospitality of scalding (water)

Ayah 56:94 الأية
وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ
Watasliyatu jaheem
Sahih International
And burning in Hellfire
Muhsin Khan
And burning in Hell-fire.
Pickthall
And roasting at hell-fire.
Yusuf Ali
And burning in Hell-Fire.
Shakir
And burning in hell.
Dr. Ghali
And the roasting in Hell-Fire.

Ayah 56:95 الأية
إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ الْيَقِينِ
Inna hatha lahuwa haqqualyaqeen
Sahih International
Indeed, this is the true certainty,
Muhsin Khan
Verily, this! This is an absolute Truth with certainty.
Pickthall
Lo! this is certain truth.
Yusuf Ali
Verily, this is the Very Truth and Certainly.
Shakir
Most surely this is a certain truth.
Dr. Ghali
Surely this is indeed the very Truth of Certitude.

Ayah 56:96 الأية
فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ
Fasabbih bismi rabbika alAAatheem
Sahih International
So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
Muhsin Khan
So glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.
Pickthall
Therefor (O Muhammad) praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous.
Yusuf Ali
So celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme.
Shakir
Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great.
Dr. Ghali
So extol with the Name of your Ever- Magnificent Lord?
