1st Ayah  1  الأية ١الأولي
بِسْم ِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
وَالسَّمَاءِ ذَاتِ الْبُرُوجِ
Wassama-i thatialburooj

Sahih International
 
By the sky containing great stars

Muhsin Khan
 
By the heaven, holding the big stars.

Pickthall
 
By the heaven, holding mansions of the stars,

Yusuf Ali
 
By the sky, (displaying) the Zodiacal Signs;

Shakir
 
I swear by the mansions of the stars,

Dr. Ghali
 
And (by) the heaven comprising the constellations,

Ayah  85:2  الأية
وَالْيَوْمِ الْمَوْعُودِ
Walyawmi almawAAood

Sahih International
 
And [by] the promised Day

Muhsin Khan
 
And by the Promised Day (i.e. the Day of Resurrection);

Pickthall
 
And by the Promised Day.

Yusuf Ali
 
By the promised Day (of Judgment);

Shakir
 
And the promised day,

Dr. Ghali
 
And (by) the promised Day,

Ayah  85:3  الأية
وَشَاهِدٍ وَمَشْهُودٍ
Washahidin wamashhood

Sahih International
 
And [by] the witness and what is witnessed,

Muhsin Khan
 
And by the witnessing day (i.e. Friday), and by the witnessed day [i.e. the day of 'Arafat (Hajj) the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah];

Pickthall
 
And by the witness and that whereunto he beareth testimony,

Yusuf Ali
 
By one that witnesses, and the subject of the witness;-

Shakir
 
And the bearer of witness and those against whom the witness is borne.

Dr. Ghali
 
And (by the) witness and the witnessed-

Ayah  85:4  الأية
قُتِلَ أَصْحَابُ الْأُخْدُودِ
Qutila as-habu alukhdood

Sahih International
 
Cursed were the companions of the trench

Muhsin Khan
 
Cursed were the people of the ditch (the story of the Boy and the King).

Pickthall
 
(Self-)destroyed were the owners of the ditch

Yusuf Ali
 
Woe to the makers of the pit (of fire),

Shakir
 
Cursed be the makers of the pit,

Dr. Ghali
 
Slain were (i.e., Those who dug a trench, in which they burnt the believers) the companions of the Trench,

Ayah  85:5  الأية
النَّارِ ذَاتِ الْوَقُودِ
Annari thati alwaqood

Sahih International
 
[Containing] the fire full of fuel,

Muhsin Khan
 
Fire supplied (abundantly) with fuel,

Pickthall
 
Of the fuel-fed fire,

Yusuf Ali
 
Fire supplied (abundantly) with fuel:

Shakir
 
Of the fire (kept burning) with fuel,

Dr. Ghali
 
Of the fire comprising (abounding) fuel,

Ayah  85:6  الأية
إِذْ هُمْ عَلَيْهَا قُعُودٌ
Ith hum AAalayha quAAood

Sahih International
 
When they were sitting near it

Muhsin Khan
 
When they sat by it (fire),

Pickthall
 
When they sat by it,

Yusuf Ali
 
Behold! they sat over against the (fire),

Shakir
 
When they sat by it,

Dr. Ghali
 
As they were seated over it.

Ayah  85:7  الأية
وَهُمْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَفْعَلُونَ بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ شُهُودٌ
Wahum AAala ma yafAAaloona bilmu/mineenashuhood

Sahih International
 
And they, to what they were doing against the believers, were witnesses.

Muhsin Khan
 
And they witnessed what they were doing against the believers (i.e. burning them).

Pickthall
 
And were themselves the witnesses of what they did to the believers.

Yusuf Ali
 
And they witnessed (all) that they were doing against the Believers.

Shakir
 
And they were witnesses of what they did with the believers.

Dr. Ghali
 
And were (themselves) witnesses of what they performed against the believers.

Ayah  85:8  الأية
وَمَا نَقَمُوا مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا أَن يُؤْمِنُوا بِاللهِ الْعَزِيزِ الْحَمِيدِ
Wama naqamoo minhum illa anyu/minoo billahi alAAazeezi alhameed

Sahih International
 
And they resented them not except because they believed in Allah , the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy,

Muhsin Khan
 
They had nothing against them, except that they believed in Allah, the All-Mighty, Worthy of all Praise!

Pickthall
 
They had naught against them save that they believed in Allah, the Mighty, the Owner of Praise,

Yusuf Ali
 
And they ill-treated them for no other reason than that they believed in Allah, Exalted in Power, Worthy of all Praise!-

Shakir
 
And they did not take vengeance on them for aught except that they believed in Allah, the Mighty, the Praised,

Dr. Ghali
 
And in no way did they seek vengeance on them except that they believed in Allah, The Ever-Mighty, The Ever-Praiseworthy,

Ayah  85:9  الأية
الَّذِي لَهُ مُلْكُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۚ وَاللهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ شَهِيدٌ
Allathee lahu mulku assamawatiwal-ardi wallahu AAala kullishay-in shaheed

Sahih International
 
To whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And Allah , over all things, is Witness.

Muhsin Khan
 
Who, to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth! And Allah is Witness over everything.

Pickthall
 
Him unto Whom belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is of all things the Witness.

Yusuf Ali
 
Him to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth! And Allah is Witness to all things.

Shakir
 
Whose is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is a Witness of all things.

Dr. Ghali
 
Who has the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is Ever-Present Witness over everything.

Ayah  85:10  الأية
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ فَتَنُوا الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَتُوبُوا فَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ الْحَرِيقِ
Inna allatheena fatanoo almu/mineenawalmu/minati thumma lam yatooboo falahum AAathabujahannama walahum AAathabu alhareeq

Sahih International
 
Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire.

Muhsin Khan
 
Verily, those who put into trial the believing men and believing women (by torturing them and burning them), and then do not turn in repentance, (to Allah), will have the torment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the burning Fire.

Pickthall
 
Lo! they who persecute believing men and believing women and repent not, theirs verily will be the doom of hell, and theirs the doom of burning.

Yusuf Ali
 
Those who persecute (or draw into temptation) the Believers, men and women, and do not turn in repentance, will have the Penalty of Hell: They will have the Penalty of the Burning Fire.

Shakir
 
Surely (as for) those who persecute the believing men and the believing women, then do not repent, they shall have the chastisement of hell, and they shall have the chastisement of burning.

Dr. Ghali
 
Surely the ones who tempted the male believers and the female believers, (and) thereafter they have not repented, then they will have the torment of Hell, and they will (also) have the torment of the burning.

Ayah  85:11  الأية
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتٌ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْكَبِيرُ
Inna allatheena amanoowaAAamiloo assalihati lahum jannatuntajree min tahtiha al-anharu thalikaalfawzu alkabeer

Sahih International
 
Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great attainment.

Muhsin Khan
 
Verily, those who believe and do righteous good deeds, for them will be Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise). That is the great success.

Pickthall
 
Lo! those who believe and do good works, theirs will be Gardens underneath which rivers flow. That is the Great Success.

Yusuf Ali
 
For those who believe and do righteous deeds, will be Gardens; beneath which rivers flow: That is the great Salvation, (the fulfilment of all desires),

Shakir
 
Surely (as for) those who believe and do good, they shall have gardens beneath which rivers flow, that is the great achievement.

Dr. Ghali
 
Surely the ones who have believed and done deeds of righteousness will have Gardens from beneath which rivers run; that is the great triumph.

Ayah  85:12  الأية
إِنَّ بَطْشَ رَبِّكَ لَشَدِيدٌ
Inna batsha rabbika lashadeed

Sahih International
 
Indeed, the vengeance of your Lord is severe.

Muhsin Khan
 
Verily, (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) the Grip (Punishment) of your Lord is severe.

Pickthall
 
Lo! the punishment of thy Lord is stern.

Yusuf Ali
 
Truly strong is the Grip (and Power) of thy Lord.

Shakir
 
Surely the might of your Lord is great.

Dr. Ghali
 
Surely your Lord's assault is strict indeed.

Ayah  85:13  الأية
إِنَّهُ هُوَ يُبْدِئُ وَيُعِيدُ
Innahu huwa yubdi-o wayuAAeed

Sahih International
 
Indeed, it is He who originates [creation] and repeats.

Muhsin Khan
 
Verily, He it is Who begins (punishment) and repeats (punishment in the Hereafter) (or originates the creation of everything, and then repeats it on the Day of Resurrection).

Pickthall
 
Lo! He it is Who produceth, then reproduceth,

Yusuf Ali
 
It is He Who creates from the very beginning, and He can restore (life).

Shakir
 
Surely He it is Who originates and reproduces,

Dr. Ghali
 
Surely He, Ever He, starts and He brings (you) back.

Ayah  85:14  الأية
وَهُوَ الْغَفُورُ الْوَدُودُ
Wahuwa alghafooru alwadood

Sahih International
 
And He is the Forgiving, the Affectionate,

Muhsin Khan
 
And He is Oft-Forgiving, full of love (towards the pious who are real true believers of Islamic Monotheism),

Pickthall
 
And He is the Forgiving, the Loving,

Yusuf Ali
 
And He is the Oft-Forgiving, Full of Loving-Kindness,

Shakir
 
And He is the Forgiving, the Loving,

Dr. Ghali
 
And He is The Ever-Forgiving, The Ever-Affectionate,

Ayah  85:15  الأية
ذُو الْعَرْشِ الْمَجِيدُ
Thoo alAAarshi almajeed

Sahih International
 
Honorable Owner of the Throne,

Muhsin Khan
 
Owner of the throne, the Glorious

Pickthall
 
Lord of the Throne of Glory,

Yusuf Ali
 
Lord of the Throne of Glory,

Shakir
 
Lord of the Arsh, the Glorious,

Dr. Ghali
 
The Owner of the Throne, The Ever-Glorious,

Ayah  85:16  الأية
فَعَّالٌ لِّمَا يُرِيدُ
FaAAAAalun lima yureed

Sahih International
 
Effecter of what He intends.

Muhsin Khan
 
He does what He intends (or wills).

Pickthall
 
Doer of what He will.

Yusuf Ali
 
Doer (without let) of all that He intends.

Shakir
 
The great doer of what He will.

Dr. Ghali
 
The Sublime Performer of whatever He wills.

Ayah  85:17  الأية
هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ الْجُنُودِ
Hal ataka hadeethu aljunood

Sahih International
 
Has there reached you the story of the soldiers -

Muhsin Khan
 
Has the story reached you of the hosts,

Pickthall
 
Hath there come unto thee the story of the hosts

Yusuf Ali
 
Has the story reached thee, of the forces-

Shakir
 
Has not there come to you the story of the hosts,

Dr. Ghali
 
Has the discourse about the hosts come up to you,

Ayah  85:18  الأية
فِرْعَوْنَ وَثَمُودَ
FirAAawna wathamood

Sahih International
 
[Those of] Pharaoh and Thamud?

Muhsin Khan
 
Of Fir'aun (Pharaoh) and Thamud?

Pickthall
 
Of Pharaoh and (the tribe of) Thamud?

Yusuf Ali
 
Of Pharaoh and the Thamud?

Shakir
 
Of Firon and Samood?

Dr. Ghali
 
Firaawn (Pharaoh) and Thamud?

Ayah  85:19  الأية
بَلِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا فِي تَكْذِيبٍ
Bali allatheena kafaroo fee taktheeb

Sahih International
 
But they who disbelieve are in [persistent] denial,

Muhsin Khan
 
Nay! The disbelievers (persisted) in denying (Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and his Message of Islamic Monotheism).

Pickthall
 
Nay, but those who disbelieve live in denial

Yusuf Ali
 
And yet the Unbelievers (persist) in rejecting (the Truth)!

Shakir
 
Nay! those who disbelieve are in (the act of) giving the lie to the truth.

Dr. Ghali
 
No indeed, (but) the ones who have disbelieved are (imputing) lies.

Ayah  85:20  الأية
وَاللهُ مِن وَرَائِهِم مُّحِيطٌ
Wallahu min wara-ihimmuheet

Sahih International
 
While Allah encompasses them from behind.

Muhsin Khan
 
And Allah encompasses them from behind! (i.e. all their deeds are within His Knowledge, and He will requite them for their deeds).

Pickthall
 
And Allah, all unseen, surroundeth them.

Yusuf Ali
 
But Allah doth encompass them from behind!

Shakir
 
And Allah encompasses them on every side.

Dr. Ghali
 
And Allah is beyond them Supremely Encompassing.

Ayah  85:21  الأية
بَلْ هُوَ قُرْآنٌ مَّجِيدٌ
Bal huwa qur-anun majeed

Sahih International
 
But this is an honored Qur'an

Muhsin Khan
 
Nay! This is a Glorious Quran,

Pickthall
 
Nay, but it is a glorious Qur'an.

Yusuf Ali
 
Day, this is a Glorious Qur'an,

Shakir
 
Nay! it is a glorious Quran,

Dr. Ghali
 
No indeed, (but) it is an Ever-Glorious Qur'an,

Ayah  85:22  الأية
فِي لَوْحٍ مَّحْفُوظٍ
Fee lawhin mahfooth

Sahih International
 
[Inscribed] in a Preserved Slate.

Muhsin Khan
 
(Inscribed) in Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz (The Preserved Tablet)!

Pickthall
 
On a guarded tablet.

Yusuf Ali
 
(Inscribed) in a Tablet Preserved!

Shakir
 
In a guarded tablet.

In a preserved Tablet.
