By the heaven, and At-Tariq (the night-comer, i.e. the bright star);

Ayah 86:2 الأية
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الطَّارِقُ
Wama adraka ma attariq

And what can make you know what is the night comer?

And what will make you to know what At-Tariq (night-comer) is?

- Ah, what will tell thee what the Morning Star is!

النَّجْمُ الثَّاقِبُ
Annajmu aththaqib

It is the piercing star -

Ayah 86:4 الأية
إِن كُلُّ نَفْسٍ لَّمَّا عَلَيْهَا حَافِظٌ
In kullu nafsin lamma AAalayha hafith

There is no soul but that it has over it a protector.

There is no human being but has a protector over him (or her) (i.e. angels
incharge of each human being guarding him, writing his good and bad deeds, etc.)

No human soul but hath a guardian over it.

There is no soul but has a protector over it.

There is not a soul but over it is a keeper.

Decidedly over every self there is assuredly a Preserver.
Ayah 86:5 الأية
فَلْيَنظُرِ الْإِنسَانُ مِمَّ خُلِقَ
Falyanthuri al-insanumimma khuliq

So let man observe from what he was created.

He was created from a fluid, ejected,

Ayah 86:7 الأية
يَخْرُجُ مِن بَيْنِ الصُّلْبِ وَالتَّرَائِبِ
Yakhruju min bayni assulbi wattara-ib

Emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.

Proceeding from between the back-bone and the ribs,

That issued from between the loins and ribs.

Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs:

Coming from between the back and the ribs.

Going out between the loins (Or: backbone) and the breastbones.
Ayah 86:8 الأية
إِنَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَجْعِهِ لَقَادِرٌ
Innahu AAala rajAAihi laqadir
Sahih International
Indeed, Allah , to return him [to life], is Able.

Verily, (Allah) is Able to bring him back (to life)!

Lo! He verily is Able to return him (unto life)

Surely (Allah) is able to bring him back (to life)!

Most surely He is able to return him (to life).

Surely He is indeed Determiner over his return (to life).
Ayah 86:9 الأية
يَوْمَ تُبْلَى السَّرَائِرُ
Yawma tubla assara-ir
Sahih International
The Day when secrets will be put on trial,

The Day when all the secrets (deeds, prayers, fasting, etc.) will be examined
(as to their truth).

On the day when hidden thoughts shall be searched out.
Yusuf Ali
The Day that (all) things secret will be tested,

On the day when hidden things shall be made manifest,
Dr. Ghali
On the Day when secret thoughts and actions are tried,
Ayah 86:10 الأية
فَمَا لَهُ مِن قُوَّةٍ وَلَا نَاصِرٍ
Fama lahu min quwwatin wala nasir
Sahih International
Then man will have no power or any helper.

Then will (man) have no power, nor any helper.
Pickthall
Then will he have no might nor any helper.
Yusuf Ali
(Man) will have no power, and no helper.
Shakir
He shall have neither strength nor helper.

Then in no way will he have any power or any vindicator.
Ayah 86:11 الأية
وَالسَّمَاءِ ذَاتِ الرَّجْعِ
Wassama-i thati arrajAA
Sahih International
By the sky which returns [rain]

By the sky (having rain clouds) which gives rain, again and again.

By the heaven which giveth the returning rain,

By the Firmament which returns (in its round),

I swear by the raingiving heavens,

Ayah 86:12 الأية
وَالْأَرْضِ ذَاتِ الصَّدْعِ
Wal-ardi thati assadAA

And [by] the earth which cracks open,

And the earth which splits (with the growth of trees and plants),

And the earth which splitteth (with the growth of trees and plants)

And by the Earth which opens out (for the gushing of springs or the sprouting of
vegetation),-

And the earth splitting (with plants);

And by the earth comprising crevices (producing verdure),
Ayah 86:13 الأية
إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلٌ فَصْلٌ
Innahu laqawlun fasl
Sahih International
Indeed, the Qur'an is a decisive statement,

Verily! This (the Quran) is the Word that separates (the truth from falsehood,
and commands strict legal laws for mankind to cut the roots of evil).

Lo! this (Qur'an) is a conclusive word,

Behold this is the Word that distinguishes (Good from Evil):

Most surely it is a decisive word,
Dr. Ghali
Surely (the Qur'an) is indeed a Verdict address (Literally: a decisive Saying).
Ayah 86:14 الأية
وَمَا هُوَ بِالْهَزْلِ
Wama huwa bilhazl

And it is not amusement.

And it is not a thing for amusement.

It is no pleasantry.

It is not a thing for amusement.

And it is no joke.

And in no way is it mere joking.
Ayah 86:15 الأية
إِنَّهُمْ يَكِيدُونَ كَيْدًا
Innahum yakeedoona kayda

Indeed, they are planning a plan,

Verily, they are but plotting a plot (against you O Muhammad (Peace be upon
him)).

Lo! they plot a plot (against thee, O Muhammad)

As for them, they are but plotting a scheme,

Surely they will make a scheme,

Surely they are plotting (evil) plots,
Ayah 86:16 الأية
وَأَكِيدُ كَيْدًا
Waakeedu kayda
Sahih International
But I am planning a plan.

And I (too) am planning a plan.

And I plot a plot (against them).

And I am planning a scheme.

And I (too) will make a scheme.

And I am plotting (vengeful) plots.
Ayah 86:17 الأية
فَمَهِّلِ الْكَافِرِينَ أَمْهِلْهُمْ رُوَيْدًا
Famahhili alkafireena amhilhum ruwayda
Sahih International
So allow time for the disbelievers. Leave them awhile.

So give a respite to the disbelievers. Deal you gently with them for a while.

So give a respite to the disbelievers. Deal thou gently with them for a while.

Therefore grant a delay to the Unbelievers: Give respite to them gently (for
awhile).

So grant the unbelievers a respite: let them alone for a while.
