1st Ayah 1 الأية ١الأوليبِسْم ِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ الْغَاشِيَةِ
Hal ataka hadeethu alghashiyat
Sahih International
Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming [event]?
Muhsin Khan
Has there come to you the narration of the overwhelming (i.e. the Day of
Resurrection);

Hath there come unto thee tidings of the Overwhelming?

Has the story reached thee of the overwhelming (Event)?

Has not there come to you the news of the overwhelming calamity?

Has the discourse of the Enveloper come up to you?

Ayah 88:2 الأية
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَاشِعَةٌ
Wujoohun yawma-ithin khashiAAa
Sahih International
[Some] faces, that Day, will be humbled,
Muhsin Khan
Some faces, that Day, will be humiliated (in the Hell-fire, i.e. the faces of
all disbelievers, Jews and Christians, etc.).
Pickthall
On that day (many) faces will be downcast,

Some faces, that Day, will be humiliated,

(Some) faces on that day shall be downcast,
Dr. Ghali
Faces upon that day will be submissive,

Ayah 88:3 الأية
عَامِلَةٌ نَّاصِبَةٌ
AAamilatun nasiba
Sahih International
Working [hard] and exhausted.

Labouring (hard in the worldly life by worshipping others besides Allah), weary
(in the Hereafter with humility and disgrace).

Toiling, weary,

Labouring (hard), weary,-

Ayah 88:4 الأية
تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةً
Tasla naran hamiya
Sahih International
They will [enter to] burn in an intensely hot Fire.

They will enter in the hot blazing Fire,

Scorched by burning fire,

The while they enter the Blazing Fire,-

Entering into burning fire,

Roasting at a Fire burning hot.

Ayah 88:5 الأية
تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ آنِيَةٍ
Tusqa min AAaynin aniya
Sahih International
They will be given drink from a boiling spring.

They will be given to drink from a boiling spring,

Drinking from a boiling spring,

The while they are given, to drink, of a boiling hot spring,

Made to drink from a boiling spring.

Watered from a duly (Or: hot) (boiling) spring.

Ayah 88:6 الأية
لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍ
Laysa lahum taAAamun illamin dareeAA
Sahih International
For them there will be no food except from a poisonous, thorny plant

No food will there be for them but a poisonous thorny plant,

No food for them save bitter thorn-fruit
Yusuf Ali
No food will there be for them but a bitter Dhari'
Shakir
They shall have no food but of thorns,
Dr. Ghali
No food will be brought for them except from daric, (Or: cactus thorn).

Ayah 88:7 الأية
لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِي مِن جُوعٍ
La yusminu wala yughnee minjooAA
Sahih International
Which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger.

Which will neither nourish nor avail against hunger.
Pickthall
Which doth not nourish nor release from hunger.
Yusuf Ali
Which will neither nourish nor satisfy hunger.
Shakir
Which will neither fatten nor avail against hunger.
Dr. Ghali
Not to plum pen and of no avail against hunger.

Ayah 88:8 الأية
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاعِمَةٌ
Wujoohun yawma-ithin naAAima
Sahih International
[Other] faces, that Day, will show pleasure.

(Other) faces, that Day, will be joyful,
Pickthall
In that day other faces will be calm,
Yusuf Ali
(Other) faces that Day will be joyful,
Shakir
(Other) faces on that day shall be happy,
Dr. Ghali
(Other) faces upon that day will be blissful,

Ayah 88:9 الأية
لِّسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌ
LisaAAyiha radiya
Sahih International
With their effort [they are] satisfied

Glad with their endeavour (for their good deeds which they did in this world,
along with the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism).
Pickthall
Glad for their effort past,
Yusuf Ali
Pleased with their striving,-
Shakir
Well-pleased because of their striving,
Dr. Ghali
With their endeavor satisfied,

Ayah 88:10 الأية
فِي جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ
Fee jannatin AAaliya
Sahih International
In an elevated garden,

In a lofty Paradise.

In a high Garden

In a Garden on high,
Shakir
In a lofty garden,
Dr. Ghali
In an exalted Garden,

Ayah 88:11 الأية
لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَاغِيَةً
La tasmaAAu feeha laghiya
Sahih International
Wherein they will hear no unsuitable speech.

Where they shall neither hear harmful speech nor falsehood,

Where they hear no idle speech,
Yusuf Ali
Where they shall hear no (word) of vanity:

Wherein you shall not hear vain talk.

Therein they do not hear any idle (word).

Ayah 88:12 الأية
فِيهَا عَيْنٌ جَارِيَةٌ
Feeha AAaynun jariya

Within it is a flowing spring.

Therein will be a running spring,

Wherein is a gushing spring,

Therein will be a bubbling spring:

Therein is a fountain flowing,

فِيهَا سُرُرٌ مَّرْفُوعَةٌ
Feeha sururun marfooAAa

Within it are couches raised high

Therein will be thrones raised high,

Wherein are couches raised

Therein will be Thrones (of dignity), raised on high,

Therein are upraised settees,

Ayah 88:14 الأية
وَأَكْوَابٌ مَّوْضُوعَةٌ
Waakwabun mawdooAAa

And cups put in place

And goblets set at hand

Goblets placed (ready),

And drinking-cups ready placed,

وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌ
Wanamariqu masfoofa

And cushions lined up

Ayah 88:16 الأية
وَزَرَابِيُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌ
Wazarabiyyu mabthootha

And carpets spread around.

And rich carpets (all) spread out.

And silken carpets spread.

And rich carpets (all) spread out.

And carpets spread out.

And carpets outspread.

Ayah 88:17 الأية
أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى الْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ
Afala yanthuroona ilaal-ibili kayfa khuliqat
Sahih International
Then do they not look at the camels - how they are created?

Do they not look at the camels, how they are created?
Pickthall
Will they not regard the camels, how they are created?
Yusuf Ali
Do they not look at the Camels, how they are made?-

Will they not then consider the camels, how they are created?
Dr. Ghali
Will they then not look at the camels, how they have been created,

Ayah 88:18 الأية
وَإِلَى السَّمَاءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ
Wa-ila assama-i kayfarufiAAat
Sahih International
And at the sky - how it is raised?

And at the heaven, how it is raised?

And the heaven, how it is raised?
Yusuf Ali
And at the Sky, how it is raised high?-
Shakir
And the heaven, how it is reared aloft,
Dr. Ghali
And at the heaven, how it has been raised up,

Ayah 88:19 الأية
وَإِلَى الْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ
Wa-ila aljibali kayfa nusibat
Sahih International
And at the mountains - how they are erected?

And at the mountains, how they are rooted and fixed firm?
Pickthall
And the hills, how they are set up?
Yusuf Ali
And at the Mountains, how they are fixed firm?-
Shakir
And the mountains, how they are firmly fixed,
Dr. Ghali
And at the mountains, how they have been set up,
|
Ayah 88:20 الأية
وَإِلَى الْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ
Wa-ila al-ardi kayfa sutihat
Sahih International
And at the earth - how it is spread out?
Muhsin Khan
And at the earth, how it is spread out?
Pickthall
And the earth, how it is spread?
Yusuf Ali
And at the Earth, how it is spread out?
Shakir
And the earth, how it is made a vast expanse?
Dr. Ghali
And at the earth, how it has been encrusted? (i.e., provided with a surface or
crust).

Ayah 88:21 الأية
فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَا أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌ
Fathakkir innama anta muthakkir
Sahih International
So remind, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder.
Muhsin Khan
So remind them (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)), you are only a one who reminds.
Pickthall
Remind them, for thou art but a remembrancer,
Yusuf Ali
Therefore do thou give admonition, for thou art one to admonish.
Shakir
Therefore do remind, for you are only a reminder.
Dr. Ghali
So remind them! Surely you are only a constant Reminder;

Ayah 88:22 الأية
لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِم بِمُصَيْطِرٍ
Lasta AAalayhim bimusaytir
Sahih International
You are not over them a controller.
Muhsin Khan
You are not a dictator over them.
Pickthall
Thou art not at all a warder over them.
Yusuf Ali
Thou art not one to manage (men's) affairs.
Shakir
You are not a watcher over them;
Dr. Ghali
You are not in any way a dominator over them,
|
Ayah 88:23 الأية
إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ
Illa man tawalla wakafar
Sahih International
However, he who turns away and disbelieves -
Muhsin Khan
Save the one who turns away and disbelieves
Pickthall
But whoso is averse and disbelieveth,
Yusuf Ali
But if any turn away and reject Allah,-
Shakir
But whoever turns back and disbelieves,
Dr. Ghali
Except for him who has turned away and disbelieved,

Ayah 88:24 الأية
فَيُعَذِّبُهُ اللهُ الْعَذَابَ الْأَكْبَرَ
FayuAAaththibuhu Allahu alAAathabaal-akbar
Sahih International
Then Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment.
Muhsin Khan
Then Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment.
Pickthall
Allah will punish him with direst punishment.
Yusuf Ali
Allah will punish him with a mighty Punishment,
Shakir
Allah will chastise him with the greatest chastisement.
Dr. Ghali
Then Allah will torment him with the greatest torment.

Ayah 88:25 الأية
إِنَّ إِلَيْنَا إِيَابَهُمْ
Inna ilayna iyabahum
Sahih International
Indeed, to Us is their return.
Muhsin Khan
Verily, to Us will be their return;
Pickthall
Lo! unto Us is their return
Yusuf Ali
For to Us will be their return;
Shakir
Surely to Us is their turning back,
Dr. Ghali
Surely, to Us is their coming back,

Ayah 88:26 الأية
ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُم
Thumma inna AAalayna hisabahum
Sahih International
Then indeed, upon Us is their account.

Then verily, for Us will be their reckoning.
Pickthall
And Ours their reckoning.
Yusuf Ali
Then it will be for Us to call them to account.
Shakir
Then surely upon Us is the taking of their account.
Dr. Ghali
Thereafter surely upon Us is their reckoning.
