And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness;

And the day when it revealeth him,

And (by) the daytime when it manifests it,
Ayah 91:4 الأية
وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَاهَا
Wallayli itha yaghshaha

And [by] the night when it covers it

And by the night as it conceals it (the sun);

And the night when it enshroudeth him,

By the Night as it conceals it;

And the night when it draws a veil over it,

And (by) the night when it envelops it,
Ayah 91:5 الأية
وَالسَّمَاءِ وَمَا بَنَاهَا
Wassama-i wama banaha

And [by] the sky and He who constructed it

And by the heaven and Him Who built it;

And the heaven and Him Who built it,

By the Firmament and its (wonderful) structure;

And the heaven and Him Who made it,

And (by) the heaven and That (i.e., The Command) which built it,
Ayah 91:6 الأية
وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَاهَا
Wal-ardi wama tahaha

And [by] the earth and He who spread it

And by the earth and Him Who spread it,

And the earth and Him Who spread it,

By the Earth and its (wide) expanse:

And the earth and Him Who extended it,
Dr. Ghali
And (by) the earth and That (i.e., The Command) which spread it (even),
Ayah 91:7 الأية
وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّاهَا
Wanafsin wama sawwaha
Sahih International
And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it
Muhsin Khan
And by Nafs (Adam or a person or a soul, etc.), and Him Who perfected him in
proportion;
Pickthall
And a soul and Him Who perfected it
Yusuf Ali
By the Soul, and the proportion and order given to it;
Shakir
And the soul and Him Who made it perfect,
Dr. Ghali
And (by) the self and That (i.e., The Command) which molded it,
Ayah 91:8 الأية
فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَاهَا
Faalhamaha fujooraha wataqwaha
Sahih International
And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness,
Muhsin Khan
Then He showed him what is wrong for him and what is right for him;
Pickthall
And inspired it (with conscience of) what is wrong for it and (what is) right
for it.
Yusuf Ali
And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;-
Shakir
Then He inspired it to understand what is right and wrong for it;
Dr. Ghali
So He inspired it to its impiety and piety!
Ayah 91:9 الأية
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّاهَا
Qad aflaha man zakkaha
Sahih International
He has succeeded who purifies it,
Muhsin Khan
Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that
Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing
righteous good deeds).
Pickthall
He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow,
Yusuf Ali
Truly he succeeds that purifies it,
Shakir
He will indeed be successful who purifies it,
Dr. Ghali
He has already prospered who has cleansed it.
Ayah 91:10 الأية
وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّاهَا
Waqad khaba man dassaha
Sahih International
And he has failed who instills it [with corruption].
Muhsin Khan
And indeed he fails who corrupts his ownself (i.e. disobeys what Allah has
ordered by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism or by following
polytheism, etc. or by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds).
Pickthall
And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it.
Yusuf Ali
And he fails that corrupts it!
Shakir
And he will indeed fail who corrupts it.
Dr. Ghali
And he has already been disappointed who stunts it.
Ayah 91:11 الأية
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَاهَا
Kaththabat thamoodu bitaghwaha
Sahih International
Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression,
Muhsin Khan
Thamud (people) denied (their Prophet) through their transgression (by rejecting
the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism, and by following polytheism, and by
committing every kind of sin).
Pickthall
(The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride,
Yusuf Ali
The Thamud (people) rejected (their prophet) through their inordinate
wrong-doing,
Shakir
Samood gave the lie (to the truth) in their inordinacy,
Dr. Ghali
Thamud cried lies in their in ordinance,
Ayah 91:12 الأية
إِذِ انبَعَثَ أَشْقَاهَا
Ithi inbaAAatha ashqaha
Sahih International
When the most wretched of them was sent forth.
Muhsin Khan
When the most wicked man among them went forth (to kill the she-camel).
Pickthall
When the basest of them broke forth
Yusuf Ali
Behold, the most wicked man among them was deputed (for impiety).
Shakir
When the most unfortunate of them broke forth with
And the messenger of Allah [Salih] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of
Allah or [prevent her from] her drink."
Muhsin Khan
But the Messenger of Allah [Salih (Saleh) ] said to them: "Be cautious! Fear the
evil end. That is the she-camel of Allah! (Do not harm it) and bar it not from
having its drink!"
Pickthall
And the messenger of Allah said: It is the she-camel of Allah, so let her drink!
Yusuf Ali
But the Messenger of Allah said to them: "It is a She-camel of Allah! And (bar
her not from) having her drink!"
Shakir
So Allah's messenger said to them (Leave alone) Allah's she-camel, and (give)
her (to) drink.
Dr. Ghali
Then the Messenger of Allah said to them, "The she-camel of Allah! And (do not
hinder) her drinking."
But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them
destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them].
Muhsin Khan
Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of
their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich
and poor, strong and weak, etc.)!
Pickthall
But they denied him, and they hamstrung her, so Allah doomed them for their sin
and rased (their dwellings).
Yusuf Ali
Then they rejected him (as a false prophet), and they hamstrung her. So their
Lord, on account of their crime, obliterated their traces and made them equal
(in destruction, high and low)!
Shakir
But they called him a liar and slaughtered her, therefore their Lord crushed
them for their sin and levelled them (with the ground).
Dr. Ghali
Yet they cried lies to him. So they hamstrung her; then their Lord devastated
them for their guilty (deed), so He leveled it (i.e., destroyed the whole
country).
Ayah 91:15 الأية
وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَاهَا
Wala yakhafu AAuqbaha
Sahih International
And He does not fear the consequence thereof.
Muhsin Khan
And He (Allah) feared not the consequences thereof.
