Ayah 21:2

Never comes (aught) to them of a renewed Message from their Lord, but they
listen to it as in jest,-
Shakir
There comes not to them a new reminder from their Lord but they hear it while
they sport,
Dr. Ghali
In no way does any Remembrance from their Lord come up to them a recent

are playing.

Ayah 21:3
Sahih International
With their hearts distracted. And those who do wrong conceal their private
conversation, [saying], "Is this [Prophet] except a human being like you? So
would you approach magic while you are aware [of it]?"
Muhsin Khan
With their hearts occupied (with evil things) those who do wrong, conceal their
private counsels, (saying): "Is this (Muhammad SAW) more than a human being like
you? Will you submit to magic while you see it?"
Pickthall
With hearts preoccupied. And they confer in secret. The wrong-doers say: Is this
other than a mortal like you? Will ye then succumb to magic when ye see (it)?
Yusuf Ali
Their hearts toying as with trifles. The wrong-doers conceal their private
counsels, (saying), "Is this (one) more than a man like yourselves? Will ye go
to witchcraft with your eyes open?"
Shakir
Their hearts trifling; and those who are unjust counsel together in secret: He
is nothing but a mortal like yourselves; what! will you then yield to
enchantment while you see?
Dr. Ghali
Diverted (are) their hearts. The ones who do injustice confer in secret among
themselves, "Is this nothing except a mortal like yourselves? Will you then take
to sorcery while you are beholding?" (i.e., with your eyes wide open).

Ayah 21:5
Sahih International
But they say, "[The revelation is but] a mixture of false dreams; rather, he has
invented it; rather, he is a poet. So let him bring us a sign just as the
previous [messengers] were sent [with miracles]."
Muhsin Khan
Nay, they say:"These (revelations of the Quran which are inspired to Muhammad
SAW) are mixed up false dreams! Nay, he has invented it! Nay, he is a poet! Let
him then bring us an Ayah (sign as a proof) like the ones (Prophets) that were
sent before (with signs)!"
Pickthall
Nay, say they, (these are but) muddled dreams; nay, he hath but invented it;
nay, he is but a poet. Let him bring us a portent even as those of old (who were
Allah's messengers) were sent (with portents).
Yusuf Ali
"Nay," they say, "(these are) medleys of dream! - Nay, He forged it! - Nay, He
is (but) a poet! Let him then bring us a Sign like the ones that were sent to
(Prophets) of old!"
Shakir
Nay! say they: Medleys of dreams; nay! he has forged it; nay! he is a poet; so
let him bring to us a sign as the former (prophets) were sent (with).
Dr. Ghali
"No indeed, " they said, "Jumbled dreams! No indeed, he has fabricated it; no
indeed, he is a poet! Then let him come up to us with a sign, as the earliest
ones were sent (as Messengers)."

Sahih International
Not a [single] city which We destroyed believed before them, so will they
believe?
Muhsin Khan
Not one of the towns (populations), of those which We destroyed, believed before
them (though We sent them signs), will they then believe?
Pickthall
Not a township believed of those which We destroyed before them (though We sent
them portents): would they then believe?
Yusuf Ali
(As to those) before them, not one of the populations which We destroyed
believed: will these believe?
Shakir
There did not believe before them any town which We destroyed, will they then
believe?
Dr. Ghali
In no way did any town that We caused to perish believe before them. Would they
then believe?

Ayah 21:7
Sahih International
And We sent not before you, [O Muhammad], except men to whom We revealed [the
message], so ask the people of the message if you do not know.
Muhsin Khan
And We sent not before you (O Muhammad SAW) but men to whom We inspired, so ask
the people of the Reminder [Scriptures - the Taurat (Torah), the Injeel
(Gospel)] if you do not know.
Pickthall
And We sent not (as Our messengers) before thee other than men, whom We
inspired. Ask the followers of the Reminder if ye know not?
Yusuf Ali
Before thee, also, the messengers We sent were but men, to whom We granted
inspiration: If ye realise this not, ask of those who possess the Message.
Shakir
And We did not send before you any but men to whom We sent revelation, so ask
the followers of the reminder if you do not
Dr. Ghali
And in no way did We send before you except men to whom We revealed (the
Message). So ask (This is addressed to the disbelievers) the Population of the
Remembrance, in case you do not know.

[on earth].
Muhsin Khan
And We did not create them (the Messengers, with) bodies that ate not food, nor
were they immortals,
Pickthall
We gave them not bodies that would not eat food, nor were they immortals.
Yusuf Ali
Nor did We give them bodies that ate no food, nor were they exempt from death.
Shakir
And We did not make them bodies not eating the food, and they were not to abide
(forever).
Dr. Ghali
And in no way did We make them (corporeal) forms that would not eat food, and in
no way were they eternally (abiding).

Ayah 21:9
Sahih International
Then We fulfilled for them the promise, and We saved them and whom We willed and
destroyed the transgressors.
Muhsin Khan
Then We fulfilled to them the promise, and We saved them and those whom We
willed, but We destroyed Al-Musrifun (i.e. extravagants in oppression,
polytheism and in sin).
Pickthall
Then we fulfilled the promise unto them. So we delivered them and whom We would,
and We destroyed the prodigals.
Yusuf Ali
In the end We fulfilled to them Our Promise, and We saved them and those whom We
pleased, but We destroyed those who transgressed beyond bounds.
Shakir
Then We made Our promise good to them, so We delivered them and those whom We
pleased, and We destroyed the extravagant.
Dr. Ghali
Thereafter We sincerely (made good Our) promise to them; so We delivered them
and whomever We decided (to deliver) and We caused the extravagant (ones) to
perish.

Ayah 21:10
Sahih International
We have certainly sent down to you a Book in which is your mention. Then will
you not reason?
Muhsin Khan
Indeed, We have sent down for you (O mankind) a Book, (the Quran) in which there
is Dhikrukum, (your Reminder or an honour for you i.e. honour for the one who
follows the teaching of the Quran and acts on its orders). Will you not then
understand?
Pickthall
Now We have revealed unto you a Scripture wherein is your Reminder. Have ye then
no sense?
Yusuf Ali
We have revealed for you (O men!) a book in which is a Message for you: will ye
not then understand?
Shakir
Certainly We have revealed to you a Book in which is your good remembrance;
what! do you not then understand?
Dr. Ghali
Indeed We have already sent down to you a Book wherein is your Remembrance; will
you (This is addressed to the disbelievers) then not consider?

Ayah 21:11
Sahih International
And how many a city which was unjust have We shattered and produced after it
another people.
Muhsin Khan
How many a town (community), that were wrong-doers, have We destroyed, and
raised up after them another people!
Pickthall
How many a community that dealt unjustly have We shattered, and raised up after
them another folk!
Yusuf Ali
How many were the populations We utterly destroyed because of their iniquities,
setting up in their places other peoples?
Shakir
And how many a town which was iniquitous did We demolish, and We raised up after
it another people!
Dr. Ghali
And how many a town that was unjust We have shattered, and We brought into being
after it another people.

Muhsin Khan
Then, when they perceived (saw) Our Torment (coming), behold, they (tried to)
flee from it.
Pickthall
And, when they felt Our might, behold them fleeing from it!
Yusuf Ali
Yet, when they felt Our Punishment (coming), behold, they (tried to) flee from
it.
Shakir
So when they felt Our punishment, lo! they began to fly
Dr. Ghali
Then, when they perceived Our violence, only then did they (run) scampering out
of it.
|
Ayah 21:13
Sahih International
[Some angels said], "Do not flee but return to where you were given luxury and
to your homes - perhaps you will be questioned."
Muhsin Khan
Flee not, but return to that wherein you lived a luxurious life, and to your
homes, in order that you may be questioned.
Pickthall
(But it was said unto them): Flee not, but return to that (existence) which
emasculated you and to your dwellings, that ye may be questioned.
Yusuf Ali
Flee not, but return to the good things of this life which were given you, and
to your homes in order that ye may be called to account.
Shakir
Do not fly (now) and come back to what you were made to lead easy lives in and
to your dwellings, haply you will be questioned.
Dr. Ghali
"Do not scamper out and return to whatever luxury you were given to live in and
to your dwellings, that you would be questioned."
|

Muhsin Khan
They cried: "Woe to us! Certainly! We have been Zalimun (polytheists,
wrong-doers and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, etc.)."
Pickthall
They cried: Alas for us! we were wrong-doers.
Yusuf Ali
They said: "Ah! woe to us! We were indeed wrong-doers!"
Shakir
They said: O woe to us! surely we were unjust.
Dr. Ghali
They said, "O woe to us! Surely we have been unjust."
|
Ayah 21:15
Sahih International
And that declaration of theirs did not cease until We made them [as] a harvest
[mowed down], extinguished [like a fire].
Muhsin Khan
And that cry of theirs ceased not, till We made them as a field that is reaped,
extinct (dead).
Pickthall
And this their crying ceased not till We made them as reaped corn, extinct.
Yusuf Ali
And that cry of theirs ceased not, till We made them as a field that is mown, as
ashes silent and quenched.
Shakir
And this ceased not to be their cry till We made them cut off, extinct.
Dr. Ghali
So that their (unjust) plea did not cease until We made them a harvest mown
down.
|
Ayah 21:16
Sahih International
And We did not create the heaven and earth and that between them in play.
Muhsin Khan
We created not the heavens and the earth and all that is between them for a
(mere) play .
Pickthall
We created not the heaven and the earth and all that is between them in play.
Yusuf Ali
Not for (idle) sport did We create the heavens and the earth and all that is
between!
Shakir
And We did not create the heaven and the earth and what is between them for
sport.
Dr. Ghali
And in no way did We create the heaven and the earth and whatever is between
them as playing.

Ayah 21:17
Sahih International
Had We intended to take a diversion, We could have taken it from [what is] with
Us - if [indeed] We were to do so.
Muhsin Khan
Had We intended to take a pastime (i.e. a wife or a son, etc.), We could surely
have taken it from Us, if We were going to do (that).
Pickthall
If We had wished to find a pastime, We could have found it in Our presence - if
We ever did.
Yusuf Ali
If it had been Our wish to take (just) a pastime, We should surely have taken it
from the things nearest to Us, if We would do (such a thing)!
Shakir
Had We wished to make a diversion, We would have made it from before Ourselves:
by no means would We do (it).
Dr. Ghali
If We had taken to Us a diversion, We would indeed have taken it to Us from very
close to Us, in case We are performing (that).
|
Ayah 21:18
Sahih International
Rather, We dash the truth upon falsehood, and it destroys it, and thereupon it
departs. And for you is destruction from that which you describe.
Muhsin Khan
Nay, We fling (send down) the truth (this Quran) against the falsehood
(disbelief), so it destroys it, and behold, it (falsehood) is vanished. And woe
to you for that (lie) which you ascribe (to Us) (against Allah by uttering that
Allah has a wife and a son).
Pickthall
Nay, but We hurl the true against the false, and it doth break its head and lo!
it vanisheth. And yours will be woe for that which ye ascribe (unto Him).
Yusuf Ali
Nay, We hurl the Truth against falsehood, and it knocks out its brain, and
behold, falsehood doth perish! Ah! woe be to you for the (false) things ye
ascribe (to Us).
Shakir
Nay! We cast the truth against the falsehood, so that it breaks its head, and
lo! it vanishes; and woe to you for what you describe;
Dr. Ghali
No indeed, We hurl the Truth against the untruth; so (Truth) smashes it; then,
only then does (untruth) expire. And woe to you for whatever you describe!
|
Ayah 21:19
Sahih International
To Him belongs whoever is in the heavens and the earth. And those near Him are
not prevented by arrogance from His worship, nor do they tire.
Muhsin Khan
To Him belongs whosoever is in the heavens and on earth. And those who are near
Him (i.e. the angels) are not too proud to worship Him, nor are they weary (of
His worship).
Pickthall
Unto Him belongeth whosoever is in the heavens and the earth. And those who
dwell in His presence are not too proud to worship Him, nor do they weary;
Yusuf Ali
To Him belong all (creatures) in the heavens and on earth: Even those who are in
His (very) Presence are not too proud to serve Him, nor are they (ever) weary
(of His service):
Shakir
And whoever is in the heavens and the earth is His; and those who are with Him
are not proud to serve Him, nor do they grow weary.
Dr. Ghali
And to Him belongs whoever is in the heavens and the earth; and whoever are in
His Providence do not wax too proud to do Him worship, nor do they (grow) weary.
(Or: nor do they regret)

Muhsin Khan
They (i.e. the angels) glorify His Praises night and day, (and) they never
slacken (to do so).
Pickthall
They glorify (Him) night and day; they flag not.
Yusuf Ali
They celebrate His praises night and day, nor do they ever flag or intermit.
Shakir
They glorify (Him) by night and day; they are never languid.
Dr. Ghali
They extol (Him) by night and by daytime (and) they do not flag.

Sahih International
Or have men taken for themselves gods from the earth who resurrect [the dead]?
Muhsin Khan
Or have they taken (for worship) aliha (gods) from the earth who raise the dead?
Pickthall
Or have they chosen gods from the earth who raise the dead?
Yusuf Ali
Or have they taken (for worship) gods from the earth who can raise (the dead)?
Shakir
Or have they taken gods from the earth who raise (the dead).
Dr. Ghali
Or even have they taken to themselves gods from the earth who make (the dead)
rise up again?

Ayah 21:22
Sahih International
Had there been within the heavens and earth gods besides Allah , they both would
have been ruined. So exalted is Allah , Lord of the Throne, above what they
describe.
Muhsin Khan
Had there been therein (in the heavens and the earth) gods besides Allah, then
verily both would have been ruined. Glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Throne,
(High is He) above what they attribute to Him!
Pickthall
If there were therein gods beside Allah, then verily both (the heavens and the
earth) had been disordered. Glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Throne, from all
that they ascribe (unto Him).
Yusuf Ali
If there were, in the heavens and the earth, other gods besides Allah, there
would have been confusion in both! but glory to Allah, the Lord of the Throne:
(High is He) above what they attribute to Him!
Shakir
If there had been in them any gods except Allah, they would both have certainly
been in a state of disorder; therefore glory be to Allah, the Lord of the
dominion, above what they attribute (to Him).
Dr. Ghali
If there were in both of them (i.e., the heaven and the earth) gods expcept
Allah, indeed they would (both) suffer corruption. All Extolment be to Allah,
The Lord of the Throne, above whatever they describe.

Muhsin Khan
He cannot be questioned as to what He does, while they will be questioned.
Pickthall
He will not be questioned as to that which He doeth, but they will be
questioned.
Yusuf Ali
He cannot be questioned for His acts, but they will be questioned (for theirs).
Shakir
He cannot be questioned concerning what He does and they shall be questioned.
Dr. Ghali
He will not be questioned as (to) what He performs, and they will be questioned.

Sahih International
Or have they taken gods besides Him? Say, [O Muhammad], "Produce your proof.
This [Qur'an] is the message for those with me and the message of those before
me." But most of them do not know the truth, so they are turning away.
Muhsin Khan
Or have they taken for worship (other) aliha (gods) besides Him? Say: "Bring
your proof:" This (the Quran) is the Reminder for those with me and the Reminder
for those before me. But most of them know not the Truth, so they are averse.
Pickthall
Or have they chosen other gods beside Him? say: Bring your proof (of their
godhead). This is the Reminder of those with me and those before me, but most of
them know not the Truth and so they are averse.
Yusuf Ali
Or have they taken for worship (other) gods besides him? Say, "Bring your
convincing proof: this is the Message of those with me and the Message of those
before me." But most of them know not the Truth, and so turn away.
Shakir
Or, have they taken gods besides Him? Say: Bring your proof; this is the
reminder of those with me and the reminder of those before me. Nay! most of them
do not know the truth, so they turn aside.
Dr. Ghali
Or even have they taken to themselves gods apart from Him? Say, "Offer your
proof! This is the Remembrance of whomever are with me, and the Remembrance of
whomever were before me." No indeed, most of them do not know the Truth, so they
are veering away.

Sahih International
And We sent not before you any messenger except that We revealed to him that,

(Allah)], so worship Me (Alone and none else)."
Pickthall
And We sent no messenger before thee but We inspired him, (saying): There is no
Allah save Me (Allah), so worship Me.
Yusuf Ali
Not a messenger did We send before thee without this inspiration sent by Us to
him: that there is no god but I; therefore worship and serve Me.
Shakir
And We did not send before you any messenger but We revealed to him that there
is no god but Me, therefore serve Me.
Dr. Ghali
And in no way did We send (any) Messenger even before you except that We
revealed to him, (saying), "There is no god except I; so worship Me."

And they say, "The Most Merciful has taken a son." Exalted is He! Rather, they

Muhsin Khan
And they say: "The Most Beneficent (Allah) has begotten a son (or children)."
Glory to Him! They [those whom they call children of Allah i.e. the angels,
'Iesa (Jesus) son of Maryam (Mary), 'Uzair (Ezra), etc.], are but honoured
slaves.
Pickthall
And they say: The Beneficent hath taken unto Himself a son. Be He Glorified!
Nay, but (those whom they call sons) are honoured slaves;
Yusuf Ali
And they say: "(Allah) Most Gracious has begotten offspring." Glory to Him! they
are (but) servants raised to honour.
Shakir
And they say: The Beneficent Allah has taken to Himself a son. Glory be to Him.
Nay! they are honored servants

Muhsin Khan
Nay, We gave the luxuries of this life to these men and their fathers until the
period grew long for them. See they not that We gradually reduce the land (in
their control) from its outlying borders? Is it then they who will overcome.
Pickthall
Nay, but We gave these and their fathers ease until life grew long for them. See

promise binding upon Us. Indeed, We will do it.
Muhsin Khan
And (remember) the Day when We shall roll up the heavens like a scroll rolled up
for books, as We began the first creation, We shall repeat it, (it is) a promise
binding upon Us. Truly, We shall do it.
Pickthall
The Day when We shall roll up the heavens as a recorder rolleth up a written
scroll. As We began the first creation, We shall repeat it. (It is) a promise
(binding) upon Us. Lo! We are to perform it.
Yusuf Ali
The Day that We roll up the heavens like a scroll rolled up for books
(completed),- even as We produced the first creation, so shall We produce a new
one: a promise We have undertaken: truly shall We fulfil it.
Shakir
On the day when We will roll up heaven like the rolling up of the scroll for
writings, as We originated the first creation, (so) We shall reproduce it; a
promise (binding on Us); surely We will bring it about.
Dr. Ghali
The Day when We will fold the heaven as the Recorder's folding of the Books. As
We began the first creation, We will bring it back again -a promise (binding) on
Us. Surely We have been Performers.

Ayah 21:105
Sahih International
And We have already written in the book [of Psalms] after the [previous] mention
that the land [of Paradise] is inherited by My righteous servants.
Muhsin Khan
And indeed We have written in Zabur (Psalms) [i.e. all the revealed Holy Books
the Taurat (Torah), the Injeel (Gospel), the Quran] after (We have already
written in) Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz (the Book, that is in the heaven with Allah), that
My righteous slaves shall inherit the land (i.e. the land of Paradise).
Pickthall
And verily we have written in the Scripture, after the Reminder: My righteous
slaves will inherit the earth:
Yusuf Ali
Before this We wrote in the Psalms, after the Message (given to Moses): My
servants the righteous, shall inherit the earth."
Shakir
And certainly We wrote in the Book after the reminder that (as for) the land, My
righteous servants shall inherit it.
Dr. Ghali
And indeed We have already written in the Scripture, (The Zabur = the Psalms)
even after the Remembrance, (that) "My righteous bondmen will inherit the
earth."

Ayah 21:106
Sahih International
Indeed, in this [Qur'an] is notification for a worshipping people.
Muhsin Khan
Verily, in this (the Quran) there is a plain Message for people who worship
Allah (i.e. the true, real believers of Islamic Monotheism who act practically
on the Quran and the Sunnah legal ways of the Prophet SAW).
Pickthall
Lo! there is a plain statement for folk who are devout.
Yusuf Ali
Verily in this (Qur'an) is a Message for people who would (truly) worship Allah.
Shakir
Most surely in this is a message to a people who serve
Dr. Ghali
Surely in this is indeed a proclamation to a worshiping people.

Ayah 21:107
Sahih International
And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.
Muhsin Khan
And We have sent you (O Muhammad SAW) not but as a mercy for the 'Alamin
(mankind, jinns and all that exists).
Pickthall
We sent thee not save as a mercy for the peoples.
Yusuf Ali
We sent thee not, but as a Mercy for all creatures.
Shakir
And We have not sent you but as a mercy to the worlds.
Dr. Ghali
And in no way have We sent you except as a mercy to the worlds.

Ayah 21:108
Sahih International
Say, "It is only revealed to me that your god is but one God; so will you be
Muslims [in submission to Him]?"
Muhsin Khan
Say (O Muhammad SAW): "It is revealed to me that your Ilah (God) is only one
Ilah (God - Allah). Will you then submit to His Will (become Muslims and stop
worshipping others besides Allah)?"
Pickthall
Say: It is only inspired in me that your Allah is One Allah. Will ye then
surrender (unto Him)?
Yusuf Ali
Say: "What has come to me by inspiration is that your Allah is One Allah: will
ye therefore bow to His Will (in Islam)?"
Shakir
Say: It is only revealed to me that your Allah is one Allah; will you then
submit?
Dr. Ghali
Say, "Surely what is revealed to me is only that your God is (only) one God; so
will you then be Muslims?" (i.e., those who surrender (to Allah)

Ayah 21:109
Sahih International
But if they turn away, then say, "I have announced to [all of] you equally. And
I know not whether near or far is that which you are promised.
Muhsin Khan
But if they (disbelievers, idolaters, Jews, Christians, polytheists, etc.) turn
away (from Islamic Monotheism) say (to them O Muhammad SAW): "I give you a
notice (of war as) to be known to us all alike. And I know not whether that
which you are promised (i.e. the torment or the Day of Resurrection) is near or
far."
Pickthall
But if they are averse, then say: I have warned you all alike, although I know
not whether nigh or far is that which ye are promised.
Yusuf Ali
But if they turn back, Say: "I have proclaimed the Message to you all alike and
in truth; but I know not whether that which ye are promised is near or far.
Shakir
But if they turn back, say: I have given you warning in fairness and I do not
know whether what you are threatened with is near or far;
Dr. Ghali
So if they turn away, then say, "I have notified you (all) equally, and
decidedly I do not realize whether what you are promised is near or far.

Ayah 21:110
Sahih International
Indeed, He knows what is declared of speech, and He knows what you conceal.
Muhsin Khan
(Say O Muhammad SAW) Verily, He (Allah) knows that which is spoken aloud
(openly) and that which you conceal.
Pickthall
Lo! He knoweth that which is said openly, and that which ye conceal.
Yusuf Ali
"It is He Who knows what is open in speech and what ye hide (in your hearts).
Shakir
Surely He knows what is spoken openly and He knows what you hide;
Dr. Ghali
Surely He knows what is spoken aloud, (literally: loud saying) and He knows what
you keep back.

Ayah 21:111
Sahih International
And I know not; perhaps it is a trial for you and enjoyment for a time."
Muhsin Khan
And I know not, perhaps it may be a trial for you, and an enjoyment for a while.
Pickthall
And I know not but that this may be a trial for you, and enjoyment for a while.
Yusuf Ali
"I know not but that it may be a trial for you, and a grant of (worldly)
livelihood (to you) for a time."
Shakir
And I do not know if this may be a trial for you and a provision till a time.
Dr. Ghali
And decidedly I do not realize (that) perhaps it would be a temptation for you,
and an enjoyment for a while." (i.e., your disbelief)

Ayah 21:112
Sahih International
[The Prophet] has said, "My Lord, judge [between us] in truth. And our Lord is
the Most Merciful, the one whose help is sought against that which you
describe."
Muhsin Khan
He (Muhammad SAW) said:"My Lord! Judge You in truth! Our Lord is the Most
Beneficent, Whose Help is to be sought against that which you attribute (unto
Allah that He has offspring, and unto Muhammad SAW that he is a sorcerer, and
unto the Quran that it is poetry, etc.)!"
Pickthall
He saith: My Lord! Judge Thou with truth. Our Lord is the Beneficent, Whose help
is to be implored against that which ye ascribe (unto Him).
Yusuf Ali
Say: "O my Lord! judge Thou in truth!" "Our Lord Most Gracious is the One Whose
assistance should be sought against the blasphemies ye utter!"
Shakir
He said: O my Lord! judge Thou with truth; and our Lord is the Beneficent Allah,
Whose help is sought against what you ascribe (to Him).
Dr. Ghali
He said, "Lord! Judge with the truth! And our Lord is The All-Merciful; His help
is to be sought against whatever you describe."
