Perhaps, [O Muhammad], you would kill yourself with grief that they will not be
believers.
Muhsin Khan
It may be that you (O Muhammad SAW) are going to kill yourself with grief, that
they do not become believers [in your Risalah (Messengership) and in your
Message of Islamic Monotheism].
Pickthall
It may be that thou tormentest thyself (O Muhammad) because they believe not.
Yusuf Ali
It may be thou frettest thy soul with grief, that they do not become Believers.
Shakir
Perhaps you will kill yourself with grief because they do not believe.
Dr. Ghali
You would possibly consume yourself that they are not believers.
And that my breast will tighten and my tongue will not be fluent, so send for
Aaron.
Muhsin Khan
"And my breast straitens, and my tongue expresses not well. So send for Harun
(Aaron) (to come along with me).
Pickthall
And I shall be embarrassed, and my tongue will not speak plainly, therefor send
for Aaron (to help me).
Yusuf Ali
"My breast will be straitened. And my speech may not go (smoothly): so send unto
Aaron.
Shakir
And by breast straitens, and my tongue is not eloquent, therefore send Thou to
Haroun (to help me);
Dr. Ghali
And my breast will be straitened, and my tongue will not be free. (i.e., it will
not express well; literally, will not go off freely) So send to Harun. (Aaron).
So I fled from you when I feared you. Then my Lord granted me wisdom and
prophethood and appointed me [as one] of the messengers.
Muhsin Khan
"So I fled from you when I feared you. But my Lord has granted me Hukman (i.e.
religious knowledge, right judgement of the affairs and Prophethood), and
appointed me as one of the Messengers.
Pickthall
Then I fled from you when I feared you, and my Lord vouchsafed me a command and
appointed me (of the number) of those sent (by Him).
Yusuf Ali
"So I fled from you (all) when I feared you; but my Lord has (since) invested me
with judgment (and wisdom) and appointed me as one of the messengers.
Shakir
So I fled from you when I feared you, then my Lord granted me wisdom and made me
of the messengers;
Dr. Ghali
So I fled from you as soon as I feared you. Then my Lord bestowed upon me
judgment and He made me one of the Emissaries.
[Pharaoh] said, "You believed Moses before I gave you permission. Indeed, he is
your leader who has taught you magic, but you are going to know. I will surely
cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will surely crucify
you all."
Muhsin Khan
[Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said: "You have believed in him before I give you leave.
Surely, he indeed is your chief, who has taught you magic! So verily, you shall
come to know. Verily, I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides,
and I will crucify you all."
Pickthall
(Pharaoh) said: Ye put your faith in him before I give you leave. Lo! he
doubtless is your chief who taught you magic! But verily ye shall come to know.
Verily I will cut off your hands and your feet alternately, and verily I will
crucify you every one.
Yusuf Ali
Said (Pharaoh): "Believe ye in Him before I give you permission? surely he is
your leader, who has taught you sorcery! but soon shall ye know! Be sure I will
cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will cause you all to
die on the cross!"
Shakir
Said he: You believe in him before I give you permission; most surely he is the
chief of you who taught you the magic, so you shall know: certainly I will cut
off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and certainly I will crucify you
all.
Dr. Ghali
He (Firaawn) said, "You have believed him before I give you permission. Surely
he is indeed your great (master) who taught you sorcery. Yet indeed you will
eventually know! Indeed I will definitely cut off (The form of the verb implies
something done repeatedly, or to a high degree or great extent. (cf. surat yusuf
3 1) your hands and legs alternately, and indeed I will definitely crucify you
all together."
Indeed, we aspire that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we were the
first of the believers."
Muhsin Khan
"Verily! We really hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins, as we are the
first of the believers [in Musa (Moses) and in the Monotheism which he has
brought from Allah]."
Pickthall
Lo! we ardently hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we are the
first of the believers.
Yusuf Ali
"Only, our desire is that our Lord will forgive us our faults, that we may
become foremost among the believers!"
Shakir
Surely we hope that our Lord will forgive us our wrongs because we are the first
of the believers.
Dr. Ghali
Surely we long for (the fact) that our Lord should forgive us our sins, for that
we are the first of the believers."
Then We inspired to Moses, "Strike with your staff the sea," and it parted, and
each portion was like a great towering mountain.
Muhsin Khan
Then We inspired Musa (Moses) (saying): "Strike the sea with your stick." And it
parted, and each separate part (of that sea water) became like the huge, firm
mass of a mountain.
Pickthall
Then We inspired Moses, saying: Smite the sea with thy staff. And it parted, and
each part was as a mountain vast.
Yusuf Ali
Then We told Moses by inspiration: "Strike the sea with thy rod." So it divided,
and each separate part became like the huge, firm mass of a mountain.
Shakir
Then We revealed to Musa: Strike the sea with your staff. So it had cloven
asunder, and each part was like a huge mound.
Dr. Ghali
Then We revealed to Musa, (saying), "Strike with your staff the sea." So it
split, and each (separate) part was as a tremendous towering mountain.
