First Ayah 1 الأية الأوليبِسْم ِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ
Sahih International
The Prophet frowned and turned away

(The Prophet (Peace be upon him)) frowned and turned away,

He frowned and turned away

(The Prophet) frowned and turned away,

He frowned and turned (his) back,

He (The prophet) frowned and turned away,

Ayah 80:2 الأية
أَن جَاءَهُ الْأَعْمَىٰ
Sahih International
Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].
Muhsin Khan
Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came
to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the
Quraish chiefs).
Pickthall
Because the blind man came unto him.
Yusuf Ali
Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting).
Shakir
Because there came to him the blind man.
Dr. Ghali
That the blind man came to him.

Ayah 80:3 الأية
وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّىٰ
Sahih International
But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be
purified

But what could tell you that per chance he might become pure (from sins)?
Pickthall
What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace)
Yusuf Ali
But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual
understanding)?-
Shakir
And what would make you know that he would purify himself,

And what makes you (The prophet) realize whether he (The blind man (Abdullah ibn
Umm Maktum) would possibly (try) to cleanse himself.

Ayah 80:4 الأية
أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ
Sahih International
Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?
Muhsin Khan
Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him?
Pickthall
Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him?
Yusuf Ali
Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him?
Shakir
Or become reminded so that the reminder should profit him?
Dr. Ghali
Or that he would constantly remember, and the Reminding would profit him?

Ayah 80:5 الأية
أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَىٰ
Sahih International
As for he who thinks himself without need,
Muhsin Khan
As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient,

As for him who thinketh himself independent,
Yusuf Ali
As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient,
Shakir
As for him who considers himself free from need (of you),
Dr. Ghali
(But) as for him who thinks himself self- sufficient,

Ayah 80:6 الأية
فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّىٰ
Sahih International
To him you give attention.

To him you attend;
Pickthall
Unto him thou payest regard.
Yusuf Ali
To him dost thou attend;
Shakir
To him do you address yourself.
Dr. Ghali
To him then you (are eager) to attend,

Ayah 80:7 الأية
وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ
Sahih International
And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.
Muhsin Khan
What does it matter to you if he will not become pure (from disbelief, you are
only a Messenger, your duty is to convey the Message of Allah).
Pickthall
Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace).
Yusuf Ali
Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding).
Shakir
And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself
Dr. Ghali
And in no way is it up to you (if) he should not (try to) cleanse himself.

Ayah 80:8 الأية
وَأَمَّا مَن جَاءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ
Sahih International
But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]
Muhsin Khan
But as to him who came to you running.
Pickthall
But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose
Yusuf Ali
But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly,
Shakir
And as to him who comes to you striving hard,
Dr. Ghali
And as for him who has come to you endeavoring (to cleanse himself),

Ayah 80:9 الأية
وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ
Sahih International
While he fears [ Allah ],

And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment),

And hath fear,

And with fear (in his heart),
Shakir
And he fears,
Dr. Ghali
And he is apprehensive (of his Lord),

Ayah 80:10 الأية
فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ
Sahih International
From him you are distracted.

Of him you are neglectful and divert your attention to another,
Pickthall
From him thou art distracted.
Yusuf Ali
Of him wast thou unmindful.
Shakir
From him will you divert yourself.
Dr. Ghali
Then of him you were being unmindful.

Ayah 80:11 الأية
كَلَّا إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ
Sahih International
No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder;
Muhsin Khan
Nay, (do not do like this), indeed it (these Verses of this Quran) are an
admonition,
Pickthall
Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment,
Yusuf Ali
By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction:
Shakir
Nay! surely it is an admonishment.
Dr. Ghali
Not at all! Surely it is a Reminder.

Ayah 80:12 الأية
فَمَن شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ
Sahih International
So whoever wills may remember it.
Muhsin Khan
So whoever wills, let him pay attention to it.

So let whosoever will pay heed to it,

Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance.
Shakir
So let him who pleases mind it.
Dr. Ghali
So, whoever decides will remember it.

Ayah 80:13 الأية
فِي صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ
Sahih International
[It is recorded] in honored sheets,

(It is) in Records held (greatly) in honour (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz).

On honoured leaves

(It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour,

In honored books,

(It is) in Scrolls high-honored,

Ayah 80:14 الأية
مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍ

Exalted and purified,

Exalted (in dignity), purified,

Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy,

Upraised, purified.

بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٍ

[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,

كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍ
Sahih International
Noble and dutiful.

Honourable and obedient.

Noble and righteous.

Honourable and Pious and Just.

Noble, virtuous.
Dr. Ghali
Honorable, benign.

Ayah 80:17 الأية
قُتِلَ الْإِنسَانُ مَا أَكْفَرَهُ
Sahih International
Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he.
Muhsin Khan
Be cursed (the disbelieving) man! How ungrateful he is!
Pickthall
Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful!
Yusuf Ali
Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah;
Shakir
Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he!
Dr. Ghali
Slain be man! How disbelieving he is!

Ayah 80:18 الأية
مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقَهُ
Sahih International
From what substance did He create him?

From what thing did He create him?

From what thing doth He create him?

From what stuff hath He created him?
Shakir
Of what thing did He create him?
Dr. Ghali
Of whichever thing did He create him?

Ayah 80:19 الأية
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُ
Sahih International
From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;

From Nutfah (male and female semen drops) He created him, and then set him in
due proportion;

From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him,

From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due
proportions;

Of a small seed; He created him, then He made him according to a measure,
Dr. Ghali
Of a sperm drop He created him; so He determined him.

Ayah 80:20 الأية
ثُمَّ السَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُ
Sahih International
Then He eased the way for him;

Then He makes the Path easy for him;

Then maketh the way easy for him,

Then doth He make His path smooth for him;

Then (as for) the way-- He has made it easy (for him)

Thereafter the way He eased for him,

Ayah 80:21 الأية
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُ فَأَقْبَرَهُ
Sahih International
Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.

Then He causes him to die, and puts him in his grave;

Then causeth him to die, and burieth him;
Yusuf Ali
Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave;
Shakir
Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave,

Thereafter He makes him to die, so He entombs him,

Ayah 80:22 الأية
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَاءَ أَنشَرَهُ
Sahih International
Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.

Then, when it is His Will, He will resurrect him (again).
Pickthall
Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life.
Yusuf Ali
Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again).
Shakir
Then when He pleases, He will raise him to life again.
Dr. Ghali
Thereafter when He (so) decides, He makes him rise again.

Ayah 80:23 الأية
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَا أَمَرَهُ
Sahih International
No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.
Muhsin Khan
Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him.
Pickthall
Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him.
Yusuf Ali
By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him.
Shakir
Nay; but he has not done what He bade him.
Dr. Ghali
Not at all! (Man) has not as yet performed what He has commanded him!

Ayah 80:24 الأية
فَلْيَنظُرِ الْإِنسَانُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِ
Sahih International
Then let mankind look at his food -

Then let man look at his food,

Let man consider his food:

Then let man look at his food, (and how We provide it):

Then let man look to his food,
Dr. Ghali
So, let (man) look into his food;

Ayah 80:25 الأية
أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا الْمَاءَ صَبًّا
Sahih International
How We poured down water in torrents,

That We pour forth water in abundance,

How We pour water in showers
Yusuf Ali
For that We pour forth water in abundance,
Shakir
That We pour down the water, pouring (it) down in abundance,
Dr. Ghali
(For) that We poured water in abundance, (Literally: with abundant pouring)

Ayah 80:26 الأية
ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا الْأَرْضَ شَقًّا
Sahih International
Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],

And We split the earth in clefts,

Then split the earth in clefts
Yusuf Ali
And We split the earth in fragments,
Shakir
Then We cleave the earth, cleaving (it) asunder,
Dr. Ghali
Thereafter We clove the earth in fissures, (Literally: in cloven "fissures").

Ayah 80:27 الأية
فَأَنبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا
Sahih International
And caused to grow within it grain

And We cause therein the grain to grow,

And cause the grain to grow therein

And produce therein corn,
Shakir
Then We cause to grow therein the grain,
Dr. Ghali
So, therein We caused (the) grain to grow,

Ayah 80:28 الأية
وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا
Sahih International
And grapes and herbage

And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle),

And grapes and green fodder

And Grapes and nutritious plants,

And grapes and clover,
Dr. Ghali
And vines, and clover, (Or: reeds).

Ayah 80:29 الأية
وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا
Sahih International
And olive and palm trees

And olives and date-palms,

And olive-trees and palm-trees

And Olives and Dates,

And the olive and the palm,
Dr. Ghali
And olives and palm trees,

Ayah 80:30 الأية
وَحَدَائِقَ غُلْبًا
Sahih International
And gardens of dense shrubbery

And gardens, dense with many trees,

And garden-closes of thick foliage

And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees,

And thick gardens,

And enclosed orchards with dense trees,

Ayah 80:31 الأية
وَفَاكِهَةً وَأَبًّا

And fruit and grass -

And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.),

And fruits and fodder,-

Ayah 80:32 الأية
مَّتَاعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ
Sahih International
[As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock.

(To be) a provision and benefit for you and your cattle.

Provision for you and your cattle.
Yusuf Ali
For use and convenience to you and your cattle.

A provision for you and for your cattle.
Dr. Ghali
An enjoyment for you and your cattle (ÉAncam includes cattle, camels, sheep and
goats).

Ayah 80:33 الأية
فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الصَّاخَّةُ
Sahih International
But when there comes the Deafening Blast

Then, when there comes As-Sakhkhah (the Day of Resurrection's second blowing of
Trumpet),

But when the Shout cometh

At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,-

But when the deafening cry comes,

Ayah 80:34 الأية
يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ

On the Day a man will flee from his brother

That Day shall a man flee from his brother,

On the day when a man fleeth from his brother

That Day shall a man flee from his own brother,

وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبِيهِ

And his mother and his father

Ayah 80:36 الأية
وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَبَنِيهِ

And his wife and his children,

And from his wife and his children.

And his spouse and his son--

And his female companion, and his seeds, (Or: sons).

Ayah 80:37 الأية
لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ
Sahih International
For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.

Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others.
Pickthall
Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others).
Yusuf Ali
Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him
indifferent to the others.
Shakir
Every man of them shall on that day have an affair which will occupy him.
Dr. Ghali
Upon that Day every (single) person of them will have an affair that will
preoccupy him.

Ayah 80:38 الأية
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ
Sahih International
[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -
Muhsin Khan
Some faces that Day, will be bright (true believers of Islamic Monotheism).
Pickthall
On that day faces will be bright as dawn,
Yusuf Ali
Some faces that Day will be beaming,
Shakir
(Many) faces on that day shall be bright,
Dr. Ghali
(Some) faces upon that Day will be shining,

Ayah 80:39 الأية
ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ
Sahih International
Laughing, rejoicing at good news.
Muhsin Khan
Laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise).
Pickthall
Laughing, rejoicing at good news;
Yusuf Ali
Laughing, rejoicing.
Shakir
Laughing, joyous.
Dr. Ghali
Laughing, (happy) at the glad tidings.

Ayah 80:40 الأية
وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ
Sahih International
And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.

And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained;

And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them,
Yusuf Ali
And other faces that Day will be dust-stained,
Shakir
And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust,
Dr. Ghali
And (some) faces upon that Day will be (covered) by resentment,

Ayah 80:41 الأية
تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ
Sahih International
Blackness will cover them.

Darkness will cover them,

Veiled in darkness,
Yusuf Ali
Blackness will cover them:
Shakir
Darkness shall cover them.
Dr. Ghali
Oppressed by gloom.

Ayah 80:42 الأية
أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْكَفَرَةُ الْفَجَرَةُ
Sahih International
Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.

Such will be the Kafarah (disbelievers in Allah, in His Oneness, and in His
Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him), etc.), the Fajarah (wicked evil doers).
Pickthall
Those are the disbelievers, the wicked.
Yusuf Ali
Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity.
Shakir
These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked.
Dr. Ghali
Those are they (who) are the persistent, impious disbelievers.
