First Ayah 1 الأية الأوليبِسْم ِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
إِذَا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ
Sahih International
When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]

When the sun Kuwwirat (wound round and lost its light and is overthrown).
Pickthall
When the sun is overthrown,
Yusuf Ali
When the sun (with its spacious light) is folded up;
Shakir
When the sun is covered,
Dr. Ghali
When the sun will be rolled, (i.e., folded; compressed).

Ayah 81:2 الأية
وَإِذَا النُّجُومُ انكَدَرَتْ
Sahih International
And when the stars fall, dispersing,

And when the stars shall fall;

And when the stars fall,

When the stars fall, losing their lustre;
Shakir
And when the stars darken,
Dr. Ghali
And when the stars will be turbid,

Ayah 81:3 الأية
وَإِذَا الْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ
Sahih International
And when the mountains are removed

And when the mountains shall made to pass away;

And when the hills are moved,
Yusuf Ali
When the mountains vanish (like a mirage);
Shakir
And when the mountains are made to pass away,
Dr. Ghali
And when the mountains will be made to travel,

Ayah 81:4 الأية
وَإِذَا الْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ
Sahih International
And when full-term she-camels are neglected

And when the pregnant she-camels shall be neglected;

And when the camels big with young are abandoned,
Yusuf Ali
When the she-camels, ten months with young, are left untended;
Shakir
And when the camels are left untended,
Dr. Ghali
And when the (she-camels) ten-months with young are untended,

Ayah 81:5 الأية
وَإِذَا الْوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتْ
Sahih International
And when the wild beasts are gathered

And when the wild beasts shall be gathered together;

And when the wild beasts are herded together,
Yusuf Ali
When the wild beasts are herded together (in the human habitations);
Shakir
And when the wild animals are made to go forth,
Dr. Ghali
And when the savage beasts will be mustered,

Ayah 81:6 الأية
وَإِذَا الْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ
Sahih International
And when the seas are filled with flame

And when the seas shall become as blazing Fire or shall overflow;

And when the seas rise,

When the oceans boil over with a swell;
Shakir
And when the seas are set on fire,

And when the seas will be seething,

Ayah 81:7 الأية
وَإِذَا النُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ
Sahih International
And when the souls are paired

And when the souls shall be joined with their bodies;

And when souls are reunited,

When the souls are sorted out, (being joined, like with like);
Shakir
And when souls are united,
Dr. Ghali
And when the (inner) selves will be paired, (i.e., joined to their bodies)

Ayah 81:8 الأية
وَإِذَا الْمَوْءُودَةُ سُئِلَتْ
Sahih International
And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked

And when the female (infant) buried alive (as the pagan Arabs used to do) shall
be questioned.
Pickthall
And when the girl-child that was buried alive is asked
Yusuf Ali
When the female (infant), buried alive, is questioned -
Shakir
And when the female infant buried alive is asked
Dr. Ghali
And when the female infant buried alive will be asked.

Ayah 81:9 الأية
بِأَيِّ ذَنبٍ قُتِلَتْ
Sahih International
For what sin she was killed

For what sin she was killed?

For what sin she was slain,
Yusuf Ali
For what crime she was killed;
Shakir
For what sin she was killed,
Dr. Ghali
For whichever guilty deed she was killed,

Ayah 81:10 الأية
وَإِذَا الصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ
Sahih International
And when the pages are made public

And when the written pages of deeds (good and bad) of every person shall be laid
open;

And when the pages are laid open,
Yusuf Ali
When the scrolls are laid open;
Shakir
And when the books are spread,
Dr. Ghali
And when the Scrolls will be unrolled,

Ayah 81:11 الأية
وَإِذَا السَّمَاءُ كُشِطَتْ
Sahih International
And when the sky is stripped away
Muhsin Khan
And when the heaven shall be stripped off and taken away from its place;
Pickthall
And when the sky is torn away,
Yusuf Ali
When the world on High is unveiled;
Shakir
And when the heaven has its covering removed,
Dr. Ghali
And when the heaven will be scraped off,

Ayah 81:12 الأية
وَإِذَا الْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ
Sahih International
And when Hellfire is set ablaze
Muhsin Khan
And when Hell-fire shall be kindled to fierce ablaze.
Pickthall
And when hell is lighted,
Yusuf Ali
When the Blazing Fire is kindled to fierce heat;
Shakir
And when the hell is kindled up,
Dr. Ghali
And when the Hell-Fire will be set blazing,

Ayah 81:13 الأية
وَإِذَا الْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ
Sahih International
And when Paradise is brought near,
Muhsin Khan
And when Paradise shall be brought near,
Pickthall
And when the Garden is brought nigh,
Yusuf Ali
And when the Garden is brought near;-
Shakir
And when the garden is brought nigh,
Dr. Ghali
And when the Garden will be drawn within reach-
|
Ayah 81:14 الأية
عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّا أَحْضَرَتْ
Sahih International
A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].
Muhsin Khan
(Then) every person will know what he has brought (of good and evil).
Pickthall
(Then) every soul will know what it hath made ready.
Yusuf Ali
(Then) shall each soul know what it has put forward.
Shakir
Every soul shall (then) know what it has prepared.
Dr. Ghali
(Then) a self will know whatever it has presented.

Ayah 81:15 الأية
فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالْخُنَّسِ
Sahih International
So I swear by the retreating stars -
Muhsin Khan
So verily, I swear by the planets that recede (i.e. disappear during the day and
appear during the night).
Pickthall
Oh, but I call to witness the planets,
Yusuf Ali
So verily I call to witness the planets - that recede,
Shakir
But nay! I swear by the stars,
Dr. Ghali
Then no! swear by the constant sinkers,
|
Ayah 81:16 الأية
الْجَوَارِ الْكُنَّسِ
Sahih International
Those that run [their courses] and disappear -
Muhsin Khan
And by the planets that move swiftly and hide themselves,
Pickthall
The stars which rise and set,
Yusuf Ali
Go straight, or hide;
Shakir
That run their course (and) hide themselves,
Dr. Ghali
The running "stars", the constant sinkers,
|
Ayah 81:17 الأية
وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ
Sahih International
And by the night as it closes in

And by the night as it departs;

And the close of night,
Yusuf Ali
And the Night as it dissipates;
Shakir
And the night when it departs,
Dr. Ghali
And by the night when it darkens, (Or: swarms)

Ayah 81:18 الأية
وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ
Sahih International
And by the dawn when it breathes
Muhsin Khan
And by the dawn as it brightens;
Pickthall
And the breath of morning
Yusuf Ali
And the Dawn as it breathes away the darkness;-
Shakir
And the morning when it brightens,
Dr. Ghali
And by the morning when it breathes,
|
Ayah 81:19 الأية
إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ
Sahih International
[That] indeed, the Qur'an is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger
Muhsin Khan
Verily, this is the Word (this Quran brought by) a most honourable messenger
[Jibrael (Gabriel), from Allah to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him)].
Pickthall
That this is in truth the word of an honoured messenger,
Yusuf Ali
Verily this is the word of a most honourable Messenger,
Shakir
Most surely it is the Word of an honored messenger,
Dr. Ghali
Surely it is indeed the Saying of an honorable Messenger (The Angel Jibril
"Gabriel")

Ayah 81:20 الأية
ذِي قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِي الْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍ
Sahih International
[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in
position],
Muhsin Khan
Owner of power, and high rank with (Allah) the Lord of the Throne,
Pickthall
Mighty, established in the presence of the Lord of the Throne,
Yusuf Ali
Endued with Power, with rank before the Lord of the Throne,
Shakir
The processor of strength, having an honorable place with the Lord of the
Dominion,
Dr. Ghali
Owning power, established in the Providence of The Owner of the Throne,
|
Ayah 81:21 الأية
مُّطَاعٍ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ
Sahih International
Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy.
Muhsin Khan
Obeyed (by the angels), trustworthy there (in the heavens).
Pickthall
(One) to be obeyed, and trustworthy;
Yusuf Ali
With authority there, (and) faithful to his trust.
Shakir
One (to be) obeyed, and faithful in trust.
Dr. Ghali
Obeyed there, (and) devoted.
|
Ayah 81:22 الأية
وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍ
Sahih International
And your companion is not [at all] mad.
Muhsin Khan
And (O people) your companion (Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) is not a madman;
Pickthall
And your comrade is not mad.
Yusuf Ali
And (O people!) your companion is not one possessed;
Shakir
And your companion is not gone mad.
Dr. Ghali
And in no ay is your companion (The Prophet) a madman.

Ayah 81:23 الأية
وَلَقَدْ رَآهُ بِالْأُفُقِ الْمُبِينِ
Sahih International
And he has already seen Gabriel in the clear horizon.
Muhsin Khan
And indeed he (Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) saw him [Jibrael (Gabriel)] in the
clear horizon (towards the east).
Pickthall
Surely he beheld Him on the clear horizon.
Yusuf Ali
And without doubt he saw him in the clear horizon.
Shakir
And of a truth he saw himself on the clear horizon.
Dr. Ghali
And indeed he (The Prophet) already saw him (The Angle Jibril "Gabriel") on the
evident horizon,
|
Ayah 81:24 الأية
وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى الْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٍ
Sahih International
And Muhammad is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen.
Muhsin Khan
And he (Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) withholds not a knowledge of the unseen.
Pickthall
And he is not avid of the Unseen.
Yusuf Ali
Neither doth he withhold grudgingly a knowledge of the Unseen.
Shakir
Nor of the unseen is he a tenacious concealer.
Dr. Ghali
And in no way is he reluctant with the Unseen (i.e., the Prophet saw Jibril).

Ayah 81:25 الأية
وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَانٍ رَّجِيمٍ
Sahih International
And the Qur'an is not the word of a devil, expelled [from the heavens].
Muhsin Khan
And it (the Quran) is not the word of the outcast Shaitan (Satan).
Pickthall
Nor is this the utterance of a devil worthy to be stoned.
Yusuf Ali
Nor is it the word of an evil spirit accursed.
Shakir
Nor is it the word of the cursed Shaitan,
Dr. Ghali
And in no way is it the saying of an outcast Shaytan (Ever-vicious "one", i.e.,
devil)

Ayah 81:26 الأية
فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ
Sahih International
So where are you going?
Muhsin Khan
Then where are you going?
Pickthall
Whither then go ye?
Yusuf Ali
When whither go ye?
Shakir
Whither then will you go?
Dr. Ghali
Where then are you (The pronoun is plural) going?
|
Ayah 81:27 الأية
إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ
Sahih International
It is not except a reminder to the worlds
Muhsin Khan
Verily, this (the Quran) is no less than a Reminder to (all) the 'Alamin
(mankind and jinns).
Pickthall
This is naught else than a reminder unto creation,
Yusuf Ali
Verily this is no less than a Message to (all) the Worlds:
Shakir
It is naught but a reminder for the nations,
Dr. Ghali
Decidedly it is nothing except a Remembrance to the worlds

Ayah 81:28 الأية
لِمَن شَاءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَسْتَقِيمَ
Sahih International
For whoever wills among you to take a right course.
Muhsin Khan
To whomsoever among you who wills to walk straight,
Pickthall
Unto whomsoever of you willeth to walk straight.
Yusuf Ali
(With profit) to whoever among you wills to go straight:
Shakir
For him among you who pleases to go straight.
Dr. Ghali
For whomever of you who decides to go straight;
|
Ayah 81:29 الأية
وَمَا تَشَاءُونَ إِلَّا أَن يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Sahih International
And you do not will except that Allah wills - Lord of the worlds.
Muhsin Khan
And you will not, unless (it be) that Allah wills, the Lord of the 'Alamin
(mankind, jinns and all that exists).
Pickthall
And ye will not, unless (it be) that Allah willeth, the Lord of Creation.
Yusuf Ali
But ye shall not will except as Allah wills,- the Cherisher of the Worlds.
Shakir
And you do not please except that Allah please, the Lord of the worlds.
Dr. Ghali
And in no way can you decide except "when" Allah "so" decides, The Lord of the
worlds.
