Balfour Declaration: Britain Broke Its Feeble Promise To The Palestinians
By Jonathan Cook
There is more than a little irony in Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to attend a "celebration" dinner this week in London with his British counterpart, Theresa May, marking the centenary of the Balfour Declaration.
Palestinian objections to the 1917 document are well-known. Britain's Lord Balfour had no right to promise a "national home for the Jewish people" in Palestine, on the land of another people.
But Israelis have been taught a different history in which they, not the Palestinians, were betrayed.
In 1939, Britain appeared to revoke its pledge, stating "unequivocally" that it would not establish a Jewish state in Palestine. Limits on Jewish immigration were imposed, at a time when Europe's Jews were fleeing the Nazi Holocaust.
The 'Israelisation' Illusion and 'Israeli Arabs' Propaganda: Palestine - The Occupied Territories
Once again, the Israeli authorities have thrown another Palestinian leader into prison. Once again that leader is Raed Salah, who has a defiant smile and whose life shares characteristics with liberation leaders known to the world through their civil, non-violent struggles, the price of which has been repeated imprisonment and sometimes assassination.
Raed Salah, who is quietly approaching sixty and living an active life, is one of the most prominent Palestinian leaders today. He has gained support from Muslim and Christian religious leaders for his defence of the Palestinian sanctities — mosques, churches, monasteries and historical monuments — threatened by the Israeli authorities and extremists. What is unique in his case is that his experience is closely linked to Jerusalem, even though he was born in the very core of the Palestinian presence, which the Israeli propaganda calls "Israeli Arabs". He is a Palestinian leader who is forced to carry Israeli citizenship.
Does It Really Matter If Netanyahu Ends Up Behind Bars?
By Neve Gordon
"Background noise" was the way Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the decision of his former chief of staff, Ari Harow, to become a state witness. The following day, the prime minister's press officer declared – for the 100th time – that "Nothing will happen, because nothing happened." Despite his relentless effort to paint a business-as-usual atmosphere, this time it looks as if Netanyahu is actually going down.
At least two probes dealing with serious allegations of bribery, breach of trust and fraud seem likely to end with an indictment against Israel's premier. In "Case 1,000", police suspect Netanyahu accepted lavish gifts from wealthy businessmen, while, in certain instances, he even provided services in return.
"Harow is the game changer," as one prominent Israeli columnist explained. Before becoming chief of staff, he was responsible for maintaining Netanyahu's connections with several billionaires, and is likely to possess incriminating information about his former boss's relations with these affluent figures.
The "unbreakable alliance," which will be confirmed by the upcoming visit of President Barak Obama to Israel , will disqualify the United States as an honest broker of peace in the Arab – Israeli conflict in Palestine , a Palestinian veteran peace negotiator says.
This "unbreakable alliance" will doom whatever hopes remain during Obama's visit for the revival of the U.S. - sponsored deadlocked "peace process," on the resumption of which depends the very survival of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' leadership, and explains as well the Palestinian frustration, low expectations, unenthusiastic welcome and the absence of celebrations for their most cherished among world celebrities, in a stark contrast to the euphoria that is sweeping Israel in waiting for what the U.S. and Israeli officials are describing as an "historic" visit.
Israeli State Terror Crowd Control Weapons: Justice Denied Far Too Long
State terror is official Israeli policy. Community incursions, assaults, and other violent incidents occur daily. Palestinian suffering follows.
They have no rights. Peaceful demonstrators are attacked. In August 1967, Israel issued Military Order No. 101 ("Order Regarding Prohibition of Incitement and Hostile Propaganda Actions," as later amended).
Public or private political gatherings, assemblies, processions, or vigils of more than 10 Palestinians without permission are prohibited.
In Your Face: Homelessness In America: Homeless In
And what are YOU
doing about the vast new epidemic of homeless people flooding the streets of
America right now?
America's wealthiest 1% are doing something about it
-- they're creating even more homeless men and women just as fast as they
The Department of Defense is doing something about this
problem too, creating vast brigades and armies of blind, paralyzed, traumatized
and/or limbless disabled 20-somethings who should have been in their prime of
life right now, the backbone of America's labor force -- but are instead
sleeping rough, out on the streets.
The Rabbis Of The Devil: Extremist Jewish Graffiti - “Gas the Arabs .. JDL”
Imagine, just imagine, the outcry that would follow an imagined call by a European Muslim or Christian religious leader suggesting sending hundreds of thousands of Jews to concentration camps. The Sheikh or priest or bishop would be lambasted beyond imagination, and his denomination or church would immediately distance itself from his foolish remarks.
Political authorities would also declare that Nazi-minded Sheikh or bishop has no place in modern Europe and that governments would nip the hateful and racist elements in the bud. In short, he would be looked upon as a pariah, to say the very least. He even might be forced to commit suicide under public pressure.
As to Jewish circles, their protests would be clarion and omnipresent.
But how would things look like if such a call took place in Israel and was made by a popular rabbi, with hundreds of thousands of followers?
As Palestinians bicker over who has sold out and who should step down following the release of the Palestine Papers, another separate but still relevant thought occurred to me the other day as I was crossing the infamous Qalandiya checkpoint on my way home. If there is one constant thread in this insane situation where accusations and conspiracy theories run wild it is that the Israelis have already cemented a system of segregation in place regardless of what scandalous reports or documents are leaked to the public. For Israel, whether the Palestinian leadership is shamed before its people or not is of no concern. For Israel, the Palestinians are right where it wants them.
I'm wondering how many people actually contemplate the many divisions Israel has categorized us under. In the occupied territories, there are the "purebred" Palestinians – those who carry green ID cards and passports (I use this term loosely), who are, for all practical purposes, at the bottom of the food chain. That is, if we exclude the truly unlucky souls isolated in the Gaza Strip.
The Palestine Papers: Offering Palestine, Selling Out Its Refugees
The Palestine Papers had damaged whatever little credibility the Ramallah-based authority still enjoyed among Palestinians The Palestine Papers, the 1,300 leaked documents that Aljazeera began publishing starting January 23, are the Palestinian response to the Israeli ‘generous offer’, an Israeli diplomatic ruse that was aimed at discrediting Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat following the collapse of the Camp David talks of July 25, 2000.
But unlike the fictitious Israeli ‘generous offer’, the Palestinian offer, as revealed by Aljazeera, was barely a testament to the spirit of the famed Arab generosity, but a series of decided and embarrassing concessions that, at times, took even the Israelis by surprise.
Can The Palestinian Authority (PA) Tackle Corruption? PA Serious Fraud, Embezzlement And Bribery
To clean up its image, the Palestinian Authority is moving to stamp out corruption. But can it be enough if the big names are exempt, asks Khaled Amayreh in Ramallah
The Palestinian Authority (PA) is preparing to file formal charges against dozens of current and former officials accused of embezzling hundreds of millions of dollars. Critics, however, describe the current campaign as being too little too late, given the rampancy of corruption and the radical -- and destabilising -- work that must be done in order to stem the tide of corruption.
Drugging Guantanamo Detainees: Torture, Abuse, And Humiliating Or Degrading Treatmen
From inception, most Guantanamo detainees were uncharged. On January 5, the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) said:
"....the vast majority of the men at Guantanamo should never have been detained in the first place, and that over 550 have been released and are peacefully rebuilding their lives." Most of the 800 captured and brought there were lawlessly "seized in broad sweeps and sold to the US (for) substantial bounties." From the Pentagon's own records, "most (have) no link to terrorism."
Netanyahu's Government: Israel's Worst Ever - Crimes of War and Against Humanity under Netanyahu
Numerous previous articles explained Israel's extremism, notably under Netanyahu exceeding the worst of Ariel Sharon. Both men, of course, are war criminals by any standard. So are complicit Knesset members - roguish, racist and hard-line, comprising a voting majority that co-opt a weak-kneed opposition going along most often to get along.
Turkish Prime Minister Tayyep Recep Erdogan agrees. On January 13, Haaretz Service headlined, "Turkey PM: Netanyahu has worst government in history of Israel," saying:
Blackwater Neo-crusaders Sent To Protect Western Puppet In Palestine
A Palestine group led by Mahmood Abbas, who is considered by the West as a "president of the Palestinian Authority", has invited to the area under its control on the Western Bank of the River Jordan a notorious gang of mercenary killers Blackwater.
The HAMAS Movement said that the appearance of the American mercenary group Blackwater in the occupied West Bank pursues two goals: maintaining the occupation status-quo and training Abbas' hit squads so that they become more sadistic.
Salam Fayyad: Israel's Man in Palestine - Evaluating PA Authority under Abbas and Fayyad
His resume includes a University of Texas economics Ph.D., a teaching position at Jordan's Yarmouk University, and economic research at the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank. From 1987 - 1995, he also served as a World Bank and IMF official, and until 2001, was IMF's man in Palestine, serving as Yasser Arafat's finance minister.
In Palestine's 2006 legislative elections, his Third Way party got 2.4% of the votes, a clear renunciation. Yet after Fatah's coup d'etat co-opted the PLO, PA and West Bank, President Mahmoud Abbas illegitimately appointed him prime minister.
Jesus Recruited For ‘Ethnic Cleansing’ Forest: God-TV Helps Israel Oust Bedouin
Half a million trees planted over the past 18 months on the ancestral lands of Bedouin tribes in Israel's Negev region were bought by a controversial Christian evangelical television channel that calls itself God-TV.
A sign posted a few kilometres north of Beersheba, the Negev's main city, announces plans to plant a total of a million trees over a large area of desert that has already been designated “God-TV Forest”.
Boycott Israel's Allies: A Workable Approach To The Zionist Oppression
Massacre in Gaza by Israeli forces should give us all pause to think. Are we really totally powerless to stop Israeli armed aggression against Palestinian civilians? The answer is, actually, no we are not completely powerless.
South Africa, the original apartheid state, was brought to its knees by an economic boycott against its policies.
For Those Living Under the Heel of Zionist Oppression And Terror, Every Day is Apocalypto
Like mob lawyers tasked with getting their criminal clients acquitted (despite the fact they know they’re guilty as hell) all can be rest assured powerful Jewish groups in the US and elsewhere–and particularly those constantly loudmouthing about Jewish persecution–have known from the beginning about the now-infamous organ-trafficking business officially sanctioned by the Israeli government.
Prof Yehuda Hiss: The Missing Link In Palestinian Organ Theft?
The autopsy surgeon Aftonbladet forgot
The hyperventilating by Israel’s leaders over a story published in a Swedish newspaper last month suggesting that the Israeli army assisted in organ theft from Palestinians has distracted attention from the disturbing allegations made by Palestinian families that were the basis of the article’s central claim.
Stories Jews Were Told: Israel, Palestine And Zionism False Traditions
What is the story American Jews have been told about Israel and Zionism, and how does it differ from the reality of what happened in Palestine? Like many American Jews, I was told by my teachers at Hebrew School and in the Jewish Day School I attended that the creation of Israel meant that Jews would never again have to live through another Holocaust. That slogan, "Never Again," popularized by the notorious Jewish Defense League, reverberated throughout the Jewish community.
