American Muslims Are At The Crossroads: Addressing Islamophobic Hate In America

By Zaheer Uddin

Indeed, the American Muslims are at the crossroads. American Muslims are feeling anxiety and uncertainty because of the Islamophobic and hate incidents nationwide. But silence and inaction is not the answer or solution. Rather Muslims do have to play a key role, and it is on them to help lead their country out of this dangerous situation as moral leaders, not victims.

Muslim Americans must find the courage to stand up for universal values of fairness and freedom during this difficult time. This is best done by working, not talking, but working together across cultures, color and creed, to build the kind of country we all want to live in.

American Muslims and Muslim organizations have helped fight discrimination, respond to media bias, and demand action from government officials, but for too long this tireless work has been limited to dealing with the consequences of hate. Managing to sustain is not the same as proactively targeting Islamophobia at its roots. America's Islamophobia network is an over $80 million industry and if there is a hope of defeating it, together we must move beyond mere survival into long-term sustainability through proactive planning.

Anti-Muslim Violence Is Everywhere—Except in the American Media

Saturday's bombing of a Minnesota mosque was just one violent incident in a long string of them. When will they get the attention they deserve?

DEAN OBEIDALLAH

If a Christian church in America were bombed in what the state's governor labeled an "act of terrorism" and countless other churches were intentionally burned to the ground over the past few months, is there any doubt you would have heard about this?

Donald Trump would be screaming about a war on Christianity. Media outlets from across the political spectrum would be covering these horrific incidents. And you know what, that coverage would be the correct response. We should have a zero-tolerance policy concerning attacks on places of worship and our freedom of religion.

Dealing with Islamophobia in America: Islamophobia in politics, Advocating for Muslim Americans

By Emily Cury, Northeastern University

The past year has been a difficult one for American Muslims.

According to a July 2017 Pew survey, 48 percent of Muslims report experiencing at least one incident of discrimination in the past 12 months. The Council on American-Islamic Relations and other Muslim advocacy organizations found these trends were particularly intense during the 2016 campaigns and the early months of the Trump presidency.

And while the survey shows that Americans report warmer feelings toward Muslims today than they did in 2014, Muslims continue to be the most negatively rated religious group – followed closely by atheists. In fact, about half of Americans (49 percent) believe that at least "some" Muslim Americans are anti-American.

Muslim Family Says McDonald's Employees Stuffed Bacon In Their Sandwiches

"It doesn't sound like a mistake, especially on 14 sandwiches," CAIR-Alabama's director said.

By Carol Kuruvilla

An advocacy group is crying foul after pieces of bacon were apparently discovered in a Muslim family's order of McDonald's McChicken sandwiches.

The Alabama chapter of the national Council on American-Islamic Relations is claiming that the bacon was intentionally inserted into the family's food at a restaurant in Decatur, Alabama, on Monday.

CAIR-Alabama's executive director, Khaula Hadeed, is calling on McDonald's to investigate further and fire any employees found responsible.

A Canadian man claiming to be a Nazi verbally abused a Muslim woman wearing headscarf in central Manitoba province, telling her to take off the religious headgear, and "go back home," a video posted on Facebook showed Wednesday.

In a video posted on her Facebook page, Kaniz Fatima, who is a Muslim Canadian living in Calgary, stands up for herself while a man claiming to be a Nazi shouts using aggressive and profane language.

The woman was reportedly asking for directions at a parking lot in a Winnipeg park, but the man started yelling after seeing her.

And you know what, that coverage would be the correct response. We should have a zero-tolerance policy concerning attacks on places of worship and our freedom of religion.

But we are seeing that very scenario play out in the American Muslim community, yet we are seeing a collective yawn from the mainstream media. Look what took place on Saturday in Bloomington, Minnesota. During early morning prayers at the Bloomington Islamic Center a person (or persons) tossed an improvised explosive device—as the FBI has described it—into the window of this place of worship. While thankfully no one was injured, the explosion was so loud it woke neighbors and caused damage to the mosque's offices.

It Is Not Just Trump That Has Emboldened White Supremacists, It Is Our Entire System

After the truly shocking vehicle attack in Charlottesville on Saturday which killed one and injured at least 19 others, senior politicians, media figures and, eventually, the President of the United States, came out to denounce white supremacist organisations. However the nature of some of their condemnations seemed phoney and hypocritical, devoid from the realities of the often toxic spheres which they themselves inhabit. Throughout modern times, elements of both the political class and the mainstream media have been embroiled with scandals and controversies. When the levels of moral corruption at the top levels of society are high, then violence caused by emboldened groups in lower socioeconomic classes becomes inevitable.

Examples of inflammatory and hateful rhetoric among US politicians are not difficult to find. Despite condemning the Charlottesville rally, Republican Senator Lindsay Graham has previously publically stated that he believes 'Iranians are liars.' Current White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon has been accused of homophobic, misogynistic and Islamophobic speech on numerous occasions, and Ted Cruz, second to Trump in the Republican leadership race in 2016, called for police to 'patrol and secure' ordinary Muslim neighbourhoods during his campaign, and yet after Charlottesville accused those responsible for being 'bigots who want to tear our country apart.' Bill O'Reilly, former host of The O'Reilly Factor - the most watched cable news programme in the US for over 14 consecutive years - repeatedly made disparaging comments against minorities, including claiming that many African-Americans were 'ill-educated and have tattoos on their foreheads.'

Trump politics, media bias triggers Islamophobia in US

On Aug. 5, the Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center, a small mosque in Bloomington, Minnesota, was targeted with an "improvised explosive device" at around 5 a.m., at a time when the congregation was inside getting ready for their morning prayer. Fortunately, no one was injured during the attack, which caused material damage to the property and was termed as a "terrible, dastardly, cowardly, terrible" crime by Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton. "The destruction done to this sacred site is just unthinkable, unforgivable," Dayton was quoted as saying by The Star Tribune during his press conference on the same day.

The latest incident was a new dark stain in the U.S. record of anti-Muslim tendencies, which have significantly increased in the past couple of years. According to experts, in addition to other factors, the election of Donald Trump as president and his discriminative political rhetoric, as well as the media bias against Muslims and Islam has been a contributing factor to the recent escalation violence against Muslims in the United States.

Although racial discrimination is not a hidden story in American history and politics, and continues to haunt the daily lives of many in the U.S., a new alarming trend, particularly against Muslims and or those with perceived Muslim backgrounds, has been observed.

Islamophobia, Political Divisions Threaten Arab American Identity

Arab culture is visible in communities of immigrants from the Middle East across the United States - the cuisine, music and language are hard to miss in places with high concentrations of Arab Americans including Dearborn, Michigan and Anaheim, California.

The Arab American identity, however, is fading from the political landscape of the country amid the rise of Islamophobia and political turmoil in the Middle East.

Mainstream US media outlets and politicians have focused on Muslim Americans, especially as anti-Muslim rhetoric intensified in right-wing circles.

Shifting the spotlight to Muslim Americans has impacted the Arab agenda in the US, including advocacy for Palestinian rights, experts say.

Most Arab Americans are Christian, while most Muslims are not Arab. More than a quarter of US Muslims are African American, according to Pew Research Center.

The Recent U.S. Terror Plots You Won't Hear Donald Trump Talking About

The president's decision to approach terrorism exclusively as a Muslim issue is dangerous.

As President Donald Trump struggles to defend his decision to halt refugee resettlement and immigration from seven Muslim-majority nations, it's become increasingly clear that the executive order he signed on Friday is a solution in search of a problem.

Islamophobia may sell in the White House, but many Americans find it hard to buy his argument that the order will keep out "radical Islamic terrorists" but is "not about religion."

No refugee from any country targeted in Trump's ban has carried out a fatal U.S. terror attack. This fact is inconvenient for Trump. He first proposed what critics ― and reportedly, Trump himself ― referred to as a "Muslim ban" in December 2015, after a Muslim couple killed 14 people in San Bernardino, California.

Syed Rizwan Farook, the husband, was an American born in Chicago. And Tashfeen Malik, the wife, was a legal permanent resident of the U.S. whose native country, Pakistan, is not included in Trump's order.

Trump, Fox News and Swedish Crime Statistics

On Saturday Trump referred to what seemed to be an alleged terror attack in Sweden the day before. He talked about the U.S. Migration Ban and justified it by mentioning an "incident" in Sweden. But nothing remarkable happened in Sweden that Friday (I am from Sweden). It is more probable that Trump was talking about a TV segment that aired Friday evening on Tucker Carlson (Fox) about "Muslim Migration" to Sweden and alleged exploding "crime rates" in Sweden.

Fox claims that "Muslims" who migrate to Sweden has increased the rates of crime astronomically and to prove this they are interviewing Ami Horowitz. He makes a lot of claims about refugees in the short segment while the TV shows pictures of Muslims and of people rioting. The aim of the claims are to make people scared; they want to fool people to view immigration as something negative, and dangerous.

I am a Swede that loves this U.S.A. and Ami and Fox News are WRONG!

The Number Of Anti-Muslim Hate Groups In The U.S. Tripled In 2016

A new Southern Poverty Law Center report connects the rise in anti-Muslim hate to the rise of Donald Trump.

The number of anti-Muslim hate groups in the U.S. nearly tripled in 2016 partly because of Donald Trump's rise to political power, suggests a new report.

There were 34 such groups in the U.S. in 2015 and 101 last year, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center's Annual Census of Hate Groups published Wednesday. That's a 197 percent rise and "by the far the most dramatic change" among extremist groups in the U.S.

"Anti-Muslim hate has been expanding rapidly for more than two years now, driven by radical Islamist attacks including the June mass murder of 49 people at an Orlando, Fla., gay nightclub, the unrelenting propaganda of a growing circle of well-paid ideologues, and the incendiary rhetoric of Trump — his threats to ban Muslim immigration, mandate a registry of Muslims in America, and more," Mark Potok, a senior fellow at SPLC, wrote in the report

Anti-Muslim hate groups nearly triple in US since last year, report finds

Southern Poverty Law Center credited rise in racist and far-right groups to Donald Trump's 'incendiary rhetoric' and his senior staff of 'anti-Muslim ideologues'

The number of organized anti-Muslim hate groups in America nearly tripled last year, from 34 to more than 100, according to a new report from the Southern Poverty Law Center, a left-leaning non-profit that tracks extremist groups.

The center credited the "incendiary rhetoric" of Donald Trump's presidential campaign with fueling the rise in anti-Muslim hate, along with anger over terror attacks like the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando last June.

#MuslimBan - As Trump Closes Doors, Mosques Open Doors

As Trump closes the doors of the US to Muslims with his travel ban, British Muslims open the doors of their mosques to welcome everyone.

This week has seen some of the largest marches in recent history, across the world, against Donald Trump's executive order to temporarily block travel for immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries- Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. It also stopped the admission of all refugees to the US for 120 days. The weeklong protests are preceded still by the global Women's March, immediately following Trump's inauguration day.

The #MuslimBan order is bigoted and discriminatory. It has resulted in fear, anxiety and stigmatisation of many families and homes because of their religion. The executive order is not only a full-frontal assault on the civil rights of Muslim citizens in the US, it is a dangerous and self-defeating policy. It purports the attacks of 9/11 as a rationale for such replusive ban, while exempting the countries of origin of all the hijackers who carried out that plot. However, no citizens from those war torn-seven countries has ever committed terror on US soil. Terrorism doesn't have a nationality; Since 9/11 more Americans have been killed by homegrown right-wing extremists than by terrorists from any Muslim country.

The Pope Just Threw Shade At Trump In The Classiest Way Possible

That's some holy shade.

Pope Francis hasn't yet directly addressed President Donald Trump's executive order on refugees and immigrants ― but the pontiff is clearly thinking about the large swath of humanity Trump is shoving to the margins.

Days after Trump signed a sweeping order dramatically restricting the number of refugees and foreign nationals allowed to enter the United States, Francis called on his flock to pray that the "poor, refugees, and marginalized" would find "welcome and comfort in our communities."

Curiously, he mentions "skyscrapers" and "real estate deals" ― two things the president is intimately acquainted with.

"We live in cities that throw up skyscrapers and shopping centers and strike big real estate deals but they abandon a part of themselves to marginal settlements on the periphery," he said in the video published on February 2. "The result of this situation is that great sections of the population are excluded and marginalized: without a job, without options, without a way out. Don't abandon them."

6 Rules Of Islamophobia In America

The Huffington Post tracked Islamophobia in the U.S. throughout 2016. Here's what we learned.

After the 2015 terror attack in Paris, when Donald Trump and other GOP presidential candidates were ratcheting up their anti-Muslim political speech, we started a running list of Islamophobic acts. Sadly, in less than two months, the list became so long the webpage often wouldn't load.

This made us recognize the very real surge in anti-Muslim incidents sweeping the nation — a surge many wanted to deny was happening at all. (Think Fox News host Eric Bolling saying he "hadn't heard of any" anti-Muslim hate crimes.)

So we developed The Islamophobia Project, and committed to tracking anti-Muslim violence, vandalism, discrimination, public policy and political speech throughout 2016.

The timing of the incidents we collected helped reveal patterns. We discovered that Trump supporters attacked, harassed, or plotted to kill Muslims at least 13 times during the election cycle, proving a potential link between Trump's rhetoric and the actions of supporters. We documented apparent surges in anti-Muslim incidents during Muslim holidays.

Why Some Christians Will Be Praying At Mosques During Trump's Inauguration

"We're here to remind our Muslim brothers and sisters that they belong here, and we love them."

As the country inaugurates its 45th president ― a man whose rhetoric, proposed policies and closest aids are openly hostile to Muslims ― a group of progressive Christians is encouraging people of conscience to visit their local mosques and stand in solidarity with their Muslim neighbors.

Los Angeles-based faith group Progressive Christians Uniting announced the initiative to its network in a newsletter in early January. At least seven independent groups of Christians and other concerned citizens throughout California will be joining Muslims in prayer as President-elect Donald Trump is sworn into office, the organization said in a press release.

"As people of faith, we consider religious freedom for all people to be a priority," Rev. Paige Eaves, president of PCU, told The Huffington Post. "We are concerned that if one form of religion can be targeted for registration, surveillance, and other violations of civil rights, then the same persecution could happen to any form of religion."

Fight Trump's Hate And Keep Fighting It

There is little need to recap the chaos of the last few days. Certainly to anyone with a social media presence or who reads the newspapers the horrors have been all too evident. The values that make up the very fabric of our societies are being challenged by hate. Our humanity and principles are threatened by a wave of Nationalistic hatred that now legitimately warrants the comparisons to Hitler's Germany.

Donald Trump becoming the President of the USA was so farfetched a year ago as to be laughable. It seemed inconceivable that a man who is willing to discriminate on faith and origins of birth could be appointed to be leader of a country whose very foundations are based on tolerance and, indeed, on immigration. But become the President he did.

Did the tolerant left underestimate Donald Trump or did we overestimate ourselves? Were we so secure in the values of liberal democracy that we neglected to treat the rise of the far right with the caution it warranted? Did we fail to understand the need for change and fail to empathise with the desperation of those who would turn to anyone, even far right haters, if they promised that change.

Catholics Should Be Familiar with Breitbart and Trump´s Migration Ban

Is the hatred of Muslims and Trump's "Migration Ban," consistent with Catholic values? That is something Breitbart writes much about, and for them the answer to these question is yes. Several of their leading editors and journalists are Catholic, like Milo Yiannopoulos and Steve Bannon.

But Catholics should remember that 90 years ago racists, led by the Ku Klux Klan, demonized the Catholic Church with a rethoric similar to Breitbart today. As for the "Migrant Ban," Catholics were partially victims of the "Migrant Bans" of 1921 and 1924.

There are many similarities between Breitbart's hatred of Muslims today and the hatred of Catholics in the history of the U.S.A.

"Restricted immigration is not an offensive but purely a defensive action. It is not adopted in criticism of others in the slightest degree, but solely for the purpose of protecting ourselves." Coolidge 1924 Republican convention.

13th: From Slave to Criminal with One Amendment

13th is a documentary film produced by Filmmaker Ava DuVernay, exploring the history of racial inequality in the US, that has manifested itself in different forms, one of which is the mass incarceration of African Americans. The US population comprises 5% of the total world population, yet 25% of the world's prisoners are in the US, ironically the land of the 'free'.

The name of the film 13th refers to the 13th amendment (XIII) of the US constitution that abolished slavery and involuntary servitude except as punishment for a crime and here where the mythology of black criminality that led to the mass incarceration of African Americans began. As a British Muslim woman committed to fighting and tackling Islamophobia, watching such a film has not only raised my awareness of the struggle of those who belong to the black minority people and communities of colour but also opened my eyes to the tactics and methodology of oppression allowing me to draw parallel lines between the discrimination of African Americans and the discrimination of Muslims.

The film shows how black criminality has been portrayed for over 100 years, by painting certain images that match well with the white imagination of black slaves as being savages, animalistic and rapists. An example of such a portrayal is a silent drama film produced in 1915, titled The Birth of a Nation that showed black men as animalistic, unintelligent and sexually aggressive towards white women.

Donald Trump's Silence On The Quebec Mosque Shooting Is Dangerous For American Muslims

Alienating the Muslim community is going to have a top-down effect.

On Sunday night, Alexandre Bissonnette, a 27-year-old white man, opened fire inside a Quebec City mosque, killing six people and wounding eight others. Witnesses said the mosque gunman fired indiscriminately into the crowd of worshipers, which included men, women and children.

When news first broke of the shooting, right-wing outlets erroneously depicted the shooter as Muslim. Fox News wrote in a now-deleted tweet: "Suspect in Quebec mosque terror attack was of Moroccan origin, reports show." The tweet was one of many uncorrected media reports about the suspected shooter's ethnic origins. Many outlets simply did not cover the shooting at all.

A Muslim man, Mohamed Belkhadir, initially mistaken for a second suspect turned out to have been a witness who ran back into the mosque to save lives.

A spokeswoman for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau immediately criticized Fox News and said the coverage was "perpetuating fear and division" and "dishonour(ed) the memory of the six victims and their families by spreading misinformation." Fox later said they corrected their tweet and story.

This Texas Man Has A Message For American Muslims In A Donald Trump Presidency

"You Belong. Stay Strong. Be Blessed. We Are One America."

One small sign; one big message.

A Texas man was photographed holding a sign on the side of a road outside the Islamic Center of Irving, near Dallas, reading: "You Belong. Stay Strong. Be Blessed. We Are One America."

A passerby snapped a photo of the man, dressed in a cowboy hat and checkered shirt, and shared it on Twitter Saturday, where it quickly went viral.

A representative for the center told The Washington Post that the man had been standing outside the mosque with his sign for days. He wanted to show support for the local Muslim community after Donald Trump was elected president this month following a campaign dominated by anti-Muslim pledges.

On Monday, the man identified himself as 53-year-old Justin Normand. He said the gesture was about "binding up the wounded."

Anti-Muslim Hate Crimes Up By 67 Percent In 2015, FBI Says

The number of hate crimes reported to police nationwide surged in 2015 by 6.7 percent compared to 2014, according to date released by the FBI on Monday.

Far outpacing the national increase in hate crime overall was the elevated number of bias crimes against Muslims. The FBI said there were 257 anti-Islamic incidents last year compared to 154 reported in 2014, an uptick of 67 percent. That was one of the largest increases against any group, according to the bureau's data.

It's a level of Islamophobia unseen since the Sept. 11 attacks, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

"We believe this jump in anti-Muslim incidents should push our nation's leaders to finally come out against the growing Islamophobia in our society," said Council on American-Islamic Relations spokesman Ibrahim Hooper. "This repudiation should start with President-elect Donald Trump, who rode a wave of Islamophobia into the White House."

Overall, there were 5,850 hate crimes counted in this year's FBI report. African Americans were targeted more than any other group. The FBI said there were 1,745 anti-black crimes last year, or 7.6 percent more than in the previous report. There were 614 anti-white crimes in 2015, compared to 593 the year before. The number of anti-Hispanic or Latino crimes was unchanged, at 299 in the two most recent reports.

Trump Wins, Islamophobia Rises

Since the result of the US elections was announced, America has borne witness to a sharp increase in Islamophobic hate crimes.

For instance, in Ann Arbor, a female Muslim student at the University of Michigan was approached by a stranger who threatened to set her on fire if she didn't remove her hijab. In Georgia, a female Muslim high school teacher was left an anonymous note. Scribbled on it was a message stating that her "headscarf isn't allowed anymore". It went on to suggest that once she had removed her hijab, she could use it to hang herself. Likewise in Ohio, a Muslim woman along with her children and elderly parents were threatened by a man while they were stopped in their car at traffic lights. Shouting obscenities at the terrified family, the man told the woman that "she doesn't belong in this country". In many ways, it is somewhat unsurprising that such an upsurge in Islamophobic hate crimes has coincided with Donald Trump's emergence as president-elect.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a non-profit organisation that tracks hate groups and hate crimes, this post-election upsurge has been manifested in more than 300 recorded incidents of 'hateful harassment and intimidation'. To give this figure some context, the SPLC report that 300 incidents is more typical of the number of Islamophobic incidents reported to them in a five to six month period rather a six or seven day equivalent. In a statement from the SPLC, the catalyst for this unprecedented surge has been "Trump's hate-filled campaign".

Donald Trump: The Islamophobia president

Trump rose to power with an Islamophobic campaign and Islamophobia now will become his official policy.

Islamophobia won resoundingly tonight. Instead of the first female president, the United States got its first Islamophobia president.

From start to finish, the 2016 presidential election vividly revealed that Islamophobia is alive, and potent and politically resonant as ever. Scapegoating Islam and vilifying Muslims was far more than merely campaign messaging; for Donald Trump it was a winning strategy.

Trump's full-blown Islamophobia resonated deeply with voters. Moreover, it mobilised more than just a fringe or rabid demographic, but a sizable segment of the American polity to cast votes in his favour.

It helped him carry Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, and virtually every battleground state.

Ben Carson: This is the guy Donald Trump has nominated to be HUD secretary.

President-elect Donald Trump has nominated a man for secretary of Housing and Urban Development who thinks Islam isn't a religion and has argued that there's a covert Muslim plot to destroy the U.S. from within.

It's concerning that Ben Carson is set to fill a seat in Trump's Cabinet, a Muslim civil liberties group said Monday.

"Based on his past Islamophobic statements and policy positions, all Americans should be very concerned on how Dr. Carson would treat Muslim HUD employees or Muslims seeking agency services," Robert McCaw, government affairs director at the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said in a statement.

Donald Trump Says U.S. Should 'Start Thinking About' Using Racial Profiling

Donald Trump on Sunday said the U.S. will have to consider the use of racial profiling in the wake of the Orlando nightclub massacre, defending the practice as ''not the worst thing to do.''

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee, who last week renewed his call for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the country in the days following the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, said America should look ''seriously'' at racial profiling.

''I think profiling is something that we're going to have to start thinking about as a country,'' Trump said in a telephone interview with CBS' Face the Nation. ''You look at Israel and you look at others, they do it and they do it successfully. And I hate the concept of profiling, but we have to start using common sense and we have to use our heads.''
