Sa'i
is not an independent worship like Tawaf,
it is subsidiary to Tawaf which is an
essential rite. In other words, it is
lawful, in certain kinds of Tawaf to
perform Tawaf without performing Sa'i
afterwards. But it is not lawful to
perform Sa'i without performing Tawaf
beforehand. The Muhrim can perform
supererogatory Circumambulation (Tawaf
Tatawwu'), without performing Sa'i
afterwards. In this case, Sa'i is not a
Sunnah. Whereas if the Muhrim is
performing Tawaf of 'Umrah, he must
perform Sa'i afterwards because it is
essential to the validity of
'Umrah. If one is performing Hajj, he
must perform Sa'i once. If he performs
it after Tawaf al Qudum (Arrival
Circumambulation), it suffices and he
does not have to perform Sa'i again.
However, if he does not perform Sa'i
after Tawaf al Qudum, he must perform it
after Tawafal Ifada (return from Mina
Circumambulation) which is called the
visit Circumambulation. Sa'i begins from
Safa and ends at Marwah and not vice
versa.
It
is unlawful to leave a part of the
distance between Safa and Marwah without
performing Sa'i in it. Close of the
rounds of Sa'i is not obligatory, it is
a Sunnah. However, it is disliked to
separate the performance of the rounds
with acts not related to worship or with
things of no consequence. The majority
of the scholars held that it is disliked
but it does not reach the level of
invalidating Sa'i. Malik held that if
the
breaks between rounds lasted for a long
duration of time or were devoted for
things of no consequence they will
invalidate Sa'i. It is a Sunnah not to
separate between Tawaf and Sa'i unless
one has a strong excuse. It is a Sunnah
to climb up the Safa and Marwah, face
the direction of Ka'bah, remember Allah,
the Most High and supplicate Him for
whatever one wishes while raising his
hands. It is reported that the Prophet (P.B.U.H.)
used to climb up the Safa, direct his
face towards the Ka'bah, say 'Allah is
the Great' for three times and, 'There
is no deity worthy of worship except
Him. He has no partners. To Him belong
the Kingdom and all praise. He alone
grants life and causes death, He has
power over all things. There is no God
but He. He has fulfilled His promise
given victory to His servant, and He
alone defeated the confederates'.
Then he used to supplicate for whatever
he wishes for. He used to do exactly the
same thing on climbing up the Marwah. It
is reported that when Ibn 'Omar climbed
up the Safa, he supplicated: 'O Allah!
you have said 'Call Me and I shall
respond to your call' Verily, You do not
break Your promise. O Allah! I pray that
just as You guided me to Islam, so
divest me not of it until the day You
cause me to die'.
On
performing Sa'i, women must not choose
crowded hours, they must wait until men
become fewer in number then undertake
it. Walking in Sa'i is a Sunnah or a
requisite condition. The Muhrim must
have a genuine excuse, e.g. disability
to walk, to be exempted from it. The
Muhrim is expected to walk between Safa
and Marwah until he reaches the two
green markers then it is preferred that
he jogs (walks fast)
between these two points. Needless to
say, this applies to male pilgrims only
who should follow the Sunnah in Ramal
(jogging with close firm steps). It is a
Sunnah to supplicate during Sa'i: 'O my
Lord, forgive me and have mercy on me. I
implore Your Forgiveness. You are the
Most Honorable, Most Dignified. O Allah,
give us all the good of this world, and
the good of the life Hereafter and save
us from the punishment of the
Fire." Purity while performing Sa'i
is a Sunnah. It is allowed for the
Muhrim to perform Sa'i when impure and
when his ablution is nullified. It is
also allowed for a woman who menstruated
after Tawaf to perform Sa'i afterwards.
We must stress that Sa'i when one is
impure is allowed if there is a strong
excuse that prevents one from performing
Ghusl (complete ablution) or in case of
minor impurity, ablution. However, It is
disliked
if one does not have any excuse for it.
It is disliked to pray two rak'at at
Safa and Marwah after completing Sa'i.
We must stress that it is an unlawful
innovation. It is disliked to repeat
Sa'i because the rites of both 'Umrah
and Hajj include only one Sa'i
