On the day of Nahr
(Sacrifice), the pilgrim should shave or
clip his hair. It is well-known
that Shafi'i and Ibn Hanbal held that
shaving or cutting hair short is an
integral part of Hajj, others held it as
essential. If the pilgrim fails to
observe this part, he must sacrifice in
compensation. A group of scholars held
that it is allowed, not obligatory after
certain rites like putting on one's
ordinary clothes and so on. Shaving
means removing hair of the head with a
razor, plucking out, creams or lotions.
Razor is the most preferred means. The
Hanafi school held that the bald pilgrim
should pass the razor over his head.
Other scholars held that sliding the
razor along a bald head, if possible, is
a Sunnah. Cutting hair short means
cutting the length of one fingertip of
the hair of the head. It is preferable
that one does not cut it more or less
than the prescribed one fingertip. As
for women, she is obligated to cut off
about the length of the tip of a finger.
It is
forbidden for a female pilgrim to shave
her hair, by consensus. However, Abu
Hanifa and Ash-Shafi'i held that it is
disliked unless there is an urgent need
or genuine excuse to justify such an
act. It is preferred for men to shave
because the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) blessed
those who shave three time and blessed
those who clip their hair short once.
Some scholars held that shaving or
cutting must include all sides of one's
head. The Hanafi school held that one
quarter of the head suffices. Ash-Shafi'i
held that it suffices to remove as many
as three hairs. As for women, they
should hold their braids or tresses and
cut off the length of about one
fingertip at most of their hair.
