A
study by the Ecofin Institute regarding the consumption patterns of the Muslim
population living in France shows that during the month of Ramadan, Muslim
spending generated a turnover of nearly 400 million euros.
As elsewhere in the world, the month of Ramadan is greeted by a large increase
in consumption, primarily of food. This is confirmed by the investigation of "Ecofin"
which states that "the purchases made by young Muslims were double compared to
other months of the year."
With the boom of the Halal market, which generated nearly 5.5 billion euros
for the french economy in 2010, the consumption of Muslims is increasing year
by year. The range of halal products extends far beyond meat, but also a
diverse range of halal frozen ready meals, baby food, and confections.
Large food retailers in france are quick to get into the act started by
offering to entire brand ranges devoted to Halal food.
According to a November 2010 survey conducted by Symphony IRI Insights Group,
a 23% increase in turnover was generated by the consumption of halal products
sold in stores for this year, generating a profit of 140 million euros .
Increased religious awareness among French Muslims has contributed to this
economic activity.
According to the Ecofin survey, in 2011, 71% of Muslims say they fast the
whole month of Ramadan against 60% in 1989, an increase of 11 percent. Of
these, 25% report regular attendance at the mosque, especially during this
month, while only 16% responded this way in 1989, an increase of 9 percent.
Another survey from the Ifop Institute shows that Muslims in France practice
more than 20 years ago, and now they are more likely to observe the fast of
Ramadan.
