The
Muhrim, whether for Hajj or 'Umrah is
allowed to do the following:
1. There is
consensus among scholars that a Muhrim
is allowed to wash his body and head
provided that no hair is pulled out in
the process. Malik disliked that a
Muhrim should take a bath because it
takes away the dirt. He is allowed to
use soap or any other cleaning agent
provided that it is not perfumed or
scented. He is allowed to have a shower
for cleanliness, refreshment or
recreation. Ghusl is a must, should a
Muhrim have wet dream or if the Muhrim
woman terminates her menstruation or the
post-birth period. Undoing the hair and
combing it is allowed provided that no
hair is pulled out.
2. The Muhrim is
allowed to carry his belongings on his
head and use an umbrella, a garment, a
tent, a roof - of a car or a train as a
shade from the heat of the sun. Both the
Hanafi
and Shafi'i schools held that a Muhrim
may shade himself from the sun. Ahmad
disliked sitting under the shade of a
hawdaj (litter). However, he allowed
shading from the sun with a cloth
provided that it is held at a distance
from the head of the male Muhrim.
Otherwise, it is forbidden.
3. A Muhrim is
allowed to cup himself, open an abscess,
wrap a wound, sever a vein or pull out a
tooth in need. He can take any kind of
necessary treatment provided that it is
not included under the restrictions of
Ihram. Cutting the Muhrim's hair while
cupping is permissible because it is
necessary.
4. It is allowed
for a Muhrim to wear a belt pocket
around his waist to keep his money.
He is allowed to wear a watch and a
ring. It is allowed to tie the pocket
bet round one's waist but it is
preferred not to tie its ends together
with a knot. Try to use clip-on belts
instead. If this is not available, he is
allowed to tie both ends of the pocket
bet with a knot provided that it is used
for keeping his money. Scholars held
that he is not allowed to tie a pocket
belt round his waist if he does not
intend to keep his money in it. If he
does so without the above mentioned
excuse, he must atone. As far as his
Izar (pilgrim garb) is concerned, he is
allowed to tie its ends together with a
knot lest it should fall down and expose
his Aurah (the forbidden parts of his
body). Imam Annawawi held that a Muhrim
is allowed to use a long narrow piece of
leather,
cloth or any other material to fasten
his Izar round his waist. He is allowed
to have a Hagaza or a place where the
waistband would fit in. He can put both
ends of the sheets which cover the upper
part of his body into his Izar. However,
he is forbidden to tie them together
with a knot or to use buttons, tooth
picks, pins clasps or needless to fasten
them together. Unfortunately, many
pilgrims often make this big mistake.
5. A Muhrim is
allowed to wear unperfumed kohl in his
eyes. He is allowed to use eye-drops for
treatment. It is disliked to use kohl as
a means of beautification. However, the
Muhrim is not obliged to atone for it.
The Muhrim is allowed to look in the
mirror for a purpose other than
beautification.
6. A Muhrim is
allowed to kill crow, kite, mouse,
snake, scorpion, tiger, wolf, lion, and
ravenous dog. The reader should refer to
the original book which contains more
illuminating and informative details.
