The
fixed places for Ihram, etiquette of
Ihram and restrictions of Ihram There are specific places where a
pilgrim or a
person intending to visit Mecca for
Umrah or Hajj must declare his intention
to do so and put on Ihram (the pilgrim
garb). Anyone intending to perform Hajj
or 'Umrah must not pass the following
places without making Ihram:
1. The Miqat of
the people of Al Madina, and all those
who pass by it whether they come from
this specific place or a nearby area, is
Dhul Hulaifah - Abar Ali. It is 450 km
to the north of Mecca. There is a
distance of 18 km between it and the
Haram in Al Madina.
2. The Miqat of
the people of Iraq and all those who
pass by it is Dhat Irq. It is a place 94
km to the north east of Mecca.
3. The Miqat of
the people of Egypt, Syria, Jordan,
Palestine and Lebanon and all those who
pass by it whether they came from it or
some other area was Al-Juhfah. But after
the settlement of Al-Juhfah disappeared
completely - it used to be situated on
the eastern coast of the Red Sea -
Rabigh, which is a village 204 km to the
north-west of Mecca became the Miqat of
the people coming from Egypt and Syria.
4. The Miqat of
the people of Najd is a mountain 94 km
to the east of Mecca, sloping a little
bit towards the north; it is called Qarn
Al Manazil. It overlooks Arafah.
5. The Miqat of
the people of Yemen and all those who
pass by it is a mountain 94 km to the
south of Mecca. The Muslims who are
residents of these Mawaqit may make
their Ihram from the places
where they are staying. However, if they
intend to perform 'Umrah, then they
should go to Al-Hol or At-Tan'im, as the
people of Mecca do, for that is their
Miqat for Umrah. They should go there
and make their Ihram for 'Umrah. A
Muslim who travels by land, air or sea
and passes by two mawaqit may make Ihram
on reaching either of them. Some
scholars hold that he should make his
Ihram on reaching the Miqat which is
farther from Mecca.
