A
Muhrim can declare his intention of
performing 'Umrah only, without Hajj.
People do so in months other than the
months of Hajj. A Muhrim can declare his
intention of performing 'Umrah during
the Hajj season. He can enjoy a normal
life after performing 'Umrah until the
time he once again puts on his Hajj garb
for Hajj. He enjoys a normal life until
the day of Arafah approaches and puts on
his Hajj garb to perform Hajj in the
same year. This kind of Ihram
is called Tamattu' for the Muhrim enjoys
a break in between 'Umrah and Hajj in
which he is allowed what was forbidden
to him when assumed the state of Ihram.
The
Muhrim can intend to perform Hajj only.
In which case, he must continue his
Ihram until the Day of Nahr - Sacrifice.
This kind of Ihram is called Ifrad. He
has another option which is that he can
declare his intention to perform both
Hajj and 'Umrah together. In this case,
he must perform the rites of 'Umrah
first then remain in the state of Ihram
until the day of Nahr (sacrifice). After
he throws the pebbles, offers the
sacrifice and shaves his head, he can
terminate his state of Ihram. He is
called Qarin because he combines both 'Umrah
and Hajj.
There
is no consensus among scholars as to
which is the best kind of Ihram -
Tamattu' Ifrad or Qiran. Allah, the
Almighty knows which is best but to the
best of my knowledge, Tamattu' is the
best kind of Ihram for the Muhrims who
have not brought sacrificial animals. If
a person puts on Ihram with the
intention of performing whatever Allah
has prescribed for him without
determining which kind of Ihram, his
Ihram would be quite lawful and valid.
He has the option of declaring his
intention of performing neither of the
three before he starts performing the
Hajj or 'Umrah rites. He is allowed to
say, 'Allah I put on Ihram to perform
the kind of Ihram which my Shaikh,
father or commander performed.' If he
knows the kind of Ihram they opted for,
he should follow suit.
